Book excerpt: It is January 1939, and Frank Eberhardt, a young, good-looking university student from Pennsylvania, has taken his father’s advice to have a year off from his studies to undertake work experience at the giant German chemical plant of IG Farben in Bremen. There, he falls in love with Helga, an 18 yr-old law student. The outbreak of war in 1939 causes him to return home before he somewhat reluctantly joins the American Air Force training to become a navigator on the Flying Fortress, or B-17. He is then sent to Norfolk from where he takes part in many historic raids over Germany. There are vivid descriptions of these, the disasters suffered and consequent effect on the men’s morale. He struggles between duty and conscience. The life in the Norfolk countryside and relationships with local people is emphasised. He is decorated for bravery, before becoming a major at the USAAF Headquarters at High Wycombe where he takes part in planning strategy. From here he manages to achieve a transfer to Bremen at the end of hostilities. There are many amorous adventures, but will he manage to see Helga again?

Book excerpt: In this book, Lorraine York examines the figure of the celebrity who expresses discomfort with his or her intense condition of social visibility. Bringing together the fields of celebrity studies and what Ann Cvetkovich has called the “affective turn in cultural studies”, York studies the mixed affect of reluctance, as it is performed by public figures in the entertainment industries. Setting aside the question of whether these performances are offered “in good faith” or not, York theorizes reluctance as the affective meeting ground of seemingly opposite emotions: disinclination and inclination. The figures under study in this book are John Cusack, Robert De Niro, and Daniel Craig—three white, straight, cis-gendered-male cinematic stars who have persistently and publicly expressed a feeling of reluctance about their celebrity. York examines how the performance of reluctance, which is generally admired in celebrities, builds up cultural prestige that can then be turned to other purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Procedures: The Police: Cases, Statutes, and Executive Materials, Sixth Edition, is a comprehensive treatment of criminal procedure that depicts the enormous variety within criminal justice systems by examining the procedures and policies of both federal and state systems and looking at sources of law and doctrine from multiple institutions. This “real-world” text offers students and instructors a deliberate focus on the realities of the high-volume circumstances that surround criminal procedure. An updated selection of cases and statutes as well as expanded coverage of important areas ensures the currency and timeliness of the Sixth Edition of this highly regarded casebook. This time- and classroom-tested casebook: Surveys the constitutional, statutory, and administrative doctrines and practices that shape how the police interact with citizens and investigate crimes Examines the procedures and policies of both federal and state systems, as well as the assumptions and judgments underlying each, and how these systems interrelate and sometimes compete with one another Looks at sources of law and doctrine from multiple institutions, including U.S. Supreme Court cases, state high court cases, statutes, rules of procedure, and police and prosecutorial policies Explores the influence of politics within various institutions of law enforcement and the role of public pressure on policing and procedure with regard to terrorism, drug trafficking, domestic abuse, and the treatment of crime victims Compares U.S. practices with the criminal investigations that happen in other countries Investigates the impact of criminal procedures on law enforcers, lawyers, courts, communities, defendants, and victims through the use of interdisciplinary materials New to the Sixth Edition: Two new authors join the editorial team: Jenia I. Turner of SMU Dedman School of Law and Kay L. Levine of Emory University School of Law. With her doctoral training in Socio-Legal Studies and her balanced experience as a prosecutor and a defense attorney in state court, Professor Levine sharpens the focus of the book on the real-world operation of courtroom actors in high-volume state systems. With her background in international criminal tribunals and comparative criminal procedure, Professor Turner strengthens the comparisons between court systems in the U.S. and those around the world. As experienced and celebrated classroom teachers, both Professors Turner and Levine bring closer attention to student learning needs in every chapter of the book. More examples and discussion demonstrate the effects of new technologies on criminal procedure. A revamped Chapter 1 offers a deeper exploration of competing models of policing and useful background about policing organizations. Reorganized Chapters 2 and 7 introduce students to the shifting analytical frameworks that the U.S. Supreme Court now employs to evaluate searches in the context of technological devices that store and collect large amounts of data. Chapter 6 relies on current newsworthy debates about police use of force to explore the alternatives and supplements to the exclusionary rule remedy. Professors and students will benefit from: Materials that support class discussion, including criminal justice actors beyond the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court: the vision is “street level federalism” Materials that portray the range of current practices in criminal justice rather than a rushed historical narrative about doctrinal trends A Supporting website that offers exemplar documents from legal practice, recent news with relevance for criminal procedure, and brief video lectures to introduce each major unit Emphasis on high-volume practical issues in criminal procedure instead of intricate but rarely-encountered questions Intuitive organization (particularly in the search and seizure units) that makes it easy to see connections among different areas of the law

Book excerpt: Throughout history people have faced unbelievable, seemingly impossible situations through war, genocide, poverty and political oppression. Yet, even in those dire situations, they have prevailed against all odds through bold action and their deep faith in Christ. "Unchained" takes the reader amidst fourteen centuries of such amazing triumphs...from the Battle of Tours in France through the Battle of Vienna in 1683 into the horrific Armenian genocide of the last century and then through the author's own rousing life. The stories will both astound and inspire you. However, "Unchained" is more than an inspirational history lesson; it contains the amazing fairy tale "The Knight and the Butterfly" that is a vibrant, colorful and moving story for children and adults alike. There is also the probing, somewhat comical story "The Question" that tears both a man and the Bible apart, piece by piece, flaw by flaw, only to have the Godly truth revealed in the end. If that isn't enough for the reader, "Unchained" includes dozens of the author's emotional poems of Poe-like dark and decadent design and then moves through his mystical and thought-provoking oeuvre. The reader is then taken on one last, incredible trip through time with Archangel Gabriel from the beginning of time straight through to the rapture. The epic poem frames the evolution of earth and the beginning and the end of civilization, the struggle between faith and science as well as the dreadful failings and the astounding victories of man. How does the world end? Read it and find out. Even Nostradamus would raise an eyebrow. However, "Unchained" is more than a collection of different tales and poetry. The astute reader will find common threads through all the stories, both in the characters and the action; moreover, that the real and the fictional are all inter-related. Discerning booklovers will recognize that, in fact, "Unchained" is one singular opus.

Book excerpt: With the success of the critically-acclaimed, Academy Award-winning film “The Fighter,” the world stood up and cheered for the inspiring true story of Micky Ward—a heart-and-soul warrior who overcame the odds to make history in the ring. But that was only part of the tale… Now, in his own words, “Irish” Micky Ward tells his inspirational life story as only he can. From his first bout at the age of seven, Micky Ward was known first and foremost for giving as good as he got, and for leaving absolutely everything he had in the ring. When he fought, quitting was never an option. It was that indomitable spirit that would allow him to survive, battle against, and overcome the harsh realities that he faced every day of his life. For it was outside the ring that Ward’s heart would be most needed, from witnessing his idolized older half-brother Dicky fall from grace, to dealing with his wildly dysfunctional—if frighteningly loyal—family, to the darkest of secrets that he has never revealed until now, and the numerous setbacks and defeats that would have stopped a lesser man. Micky Ward has remained a fighter, through and through—both as a professional boxer, and as a man who finally found his greatest strength in friendship, family, and faith in himself From the rough streets of Lowell, Massachusetts, to the blood and sweat of the international fight game, to the bright lights and adulation of Hollywood, this is the rousing, moving, tragic, and humorous story of the one and only Micky Ward.
