Book excerpt: We are about to take a journey that will lead us to a revelation that is the underlining theme of the Word of God, the very manifestation of his glory. This revelation is one of the most misunderstood phenomena in the scripture. It relates the most glorious event to ever unfold on planet Earth, the Day of the Lord. What is the Day of the Lord, you ask? Untying this mystery with its vast implications is the task at hand. There are many speculations and opinions formed that have not arrived at the core of this truth. Most ideas point to a time when God releases all his fury against this world during the final seventieth week of Daniel's chapter 9 prophecy. Although God's wrath is just and no doubt will be expressed during the Day of the Lord, is this what this day is all about or is there much more? Before we begin, we should understand this foundational truth to life and its meaning-God is good. This does not mean he is one type of good or that there is more than one kind of goodness. God is the source and authority of all good. It is who he is. In Matthew 19:17, Jesus said, "There is none good but one, that is, God." Since God is the only source of good, only he can understand, judge, and administer good. When Moses asked for God's name and he responded, "I am that I am." He dropped a bombshell. Everything good that was, is, and will be is "I am." Not only did he create everything physical (solids, liquids, and gases) and spiritual (our thoughts, dreams, goals, strengths, and all other things), he also causes them to exist because he is the "I am." He is not "I have." To increase our understanding, we should know that God is three distinctive personalities that function as one Lord. God is the Lord's corporate name. The best way to conceptualize this is to consider who we are in his image. We are composed of spirit, soul, and body that function as one. Our bodies have many members: a head, arms, legs, eyes, ears, etc. They have their different functions but move together as one. The Triune God is invisible to us since our earthly eyes cannot behold his greatness. We cannot behold the sun without protection, and God is greater than the sun. So how can we relate to each other? He chose to accomplish this through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is one of the three distinctive personalities. Jesus is God's glory, his light, the exact image of his person, and the expression of his heart.

Book excerpt: How can I know God if he is incomprehensible? Is it possible to know God in a way that takes seriously the fact that he is beyond knowledge? Steven Boyer and Christopher Hall argue that the "mystery of God" has a rightful place in theological discourse. They contend that considering divine incomprehensibility invites reverence and humility in our thinking and living as Christians and clarifies a variety of theological topics. The authors begin by investigating the biblical, historical, and practical foundations for understanding the mystery of God. They then spell out its implications for theological issues and practices such as the incarnation, salvation, and prayer, rooting knowledge of God in a concrete life of faith. Evangelical yet ecumenical, this book will appeal to theology students, pastors, church leaders, and all who want intellectual and practical guidance for knowing the unknowable God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a reason why most analysts of biblical prophecy can't figure out how Christians and Jews can ever unite. The reason is that they are missing a piece of the prophetic puzzle. A piece that is so obvious I can only conclude that God hid it in plain sight, in the Scriptures - and is only now making it known to the world as a whole rather than just a select few. The fact is that both the Old Testament and the New Testament proclaim that in the last days, Gentiles and Jews will come together into one family and will together worship the One True God. Most Jews assume that this will happen when Christians (and all other Gentiles), finally realize that they were wrong, when Christians finally realize that Jesus was not the Messiah, and convert to Judaism. Most Christians assume that this will happen when Jews finally realize that they were wrong, accept Jesus as the Messiah, and convert to Christianity. At this point in history, either alternative seems highly unlikely. But what if there is a third alternative - one that lets Jews remain Jewish, Christians remain Christian, and yet puts us all into one united family of God? In this book you will learn: * How the same type of scholarship that is used to refute Christianity refutes Judaism also, and the same type of scholarship used to support Judaism supports Christianity as well. * How the Christian doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation do not contradict Jewish monotheism as defined in the Old Testament. * How the completeness and finality of Old Testament Law can be reconciled with the apparently contradictory statement that Christ has inaugurated a better Covenant (Hebrews 8:6) It is my belief that once the ideas proposed in this book are received and applied, the world will awaken from the nearly 2,000 year old nightmare of fear and mistrust between Christians and Jews, and our mutual thirst for the arrival of the Messianic Age will finally be quenched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most remarkable story ever revealed starts like this: “...And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon...” The Great Day is anchored on the allegorical story of the woman in Revelation 12 and her adversary, which led to the war in heaven—the root of all wars and woes on earth. In her, the unchangeable and eternal purpose of God for humanity was perfectly sealed. The author presents three stages of war by her Antagonist—a first war in heaven, then many wars on earth—, then a final war from heaven before the messianic kingdom of Christ. The result is a prophecy book that is almost as dramatic and moving as a novel, yet it’s not a fiction. Interpreting the entire end-time prophecies from this vantage point, is what sets this book apart from the rest. In particular, four unique discoveries have transformed this book to a new prophetic treasure that every Christian must possess. The reader will discover early in the book, how the invention of another woman—Asherah, the mother of Baal, later coded as Babylon in Revelation 17 became Satan’s greatest game changer. Who is the real Gog and Magog—the Antichrist that would occupy Israel? Why Russia is not the Gog of Magog of Ezekiel’s prophecy. Understanding the sequence and purpose of the 21 plagues—the seven seals and the sets of retributory plagues of tribulation—seven trumpets and seven bowls of wrath. How are the unleashing of these unprecedented apocalyptic plagues linked to the two powerful prophets in Revelation 11? What will be the roles of the armies of raptured saints following King Jesus for the Armageddon war? The Great Day is a must read for every Christian concerned about the end-time—our eternal destiny. The entire kingdom agenda of Jesus is about the End-times

Book excerpt: In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today's churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering. In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God's sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.

Book excerpt: In Luke's vivid narrative, Jesus comes into Galilee proclaiming "good news to the poor . . . freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind." More than any other Gospel, the Gospel of Luke shows Jesus' great concern for the downtrodden, the oppressed and the marginalized--including women and children and even those outside the house of Israel.Darrell Bock's IVP New Testament Commentary shows why Luke's Gospel is "tailor-made" for the world we live in--a world often divided along ethnic, religious, economic and political lines. After all, the Jesus portrayed by Luke is a source of unity for his disciples and for believers from every walk of life. Tax collectors, Roman soldiers, prostitutes, city officials, religious leaders, widows and fishermen were among the diverse group brought together in the early Christian church. "The Gospel is universal in its perspective and cosmic in its scope," Bock writes. "As we look at our modern multicultural world, . . . certainly there is relevance in a Gospel that highlights how men and women of different ethnic origins can be transformed into a unified community."Along with a passage-by-passage exposition of Luke, Bock offers background information on date, destination, purpose, form and theological themes in the text. His dual focus on understanding what Luke wanted to communicate to his original readers and on discovering how that message is relevant for today's readers will make this commentary an excellent resource for all who study, preach or teach the Scriptures.

Book excerpt: Jesus Christ saves radically depraved men, women, and children from their sins. However, to understand, believe, and love the good news about the crucified and resurrected Savior, we must first understand our condition. Thus, we offer this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster: Radical Depravity. Arthur Pink introduces us to this weighty subject by asking the question, “Is man a totally and thoroughly depraved creature by nature?” Thomas Reade then tells us about the deadly consequences and bitter fruits of Adam’s fall: in Adam all die. We then consider Joel Beeke’s helpful survey of the doctrine of human depravity. A second article by Thomas Reade leads us to a painful truth: the heart of man is evil. But he does not leave us there: he takes us to the blessed Son of God for deliverance. John Owen describes with great clarity the depraved and corrupted state of man’s mind and teaches us that the only remedy for this great darkness is the new birth: “You must be born again.” Loraine Boettner explains the extent and effects of original sin, which results in human inability in the matters of salvation. What is our true spiritual condition outside of Christ? Charles Spurgeon declares that we are legally, spiritually, and eternally dead. Nevertheless, he also tells us that we can be legally, spiritually, eternally alive by faith in Jesus Christ the Son! We then hear from John Flavel that in mercy, grace, and love, God draws sinners to Jesus Christ, gradually, suitably, powerfully, effectually, and finally. That is indeed good news! J. C. Ryle brings our subject to a close by asking a penetrating question: “Are you dead or alive?” Each of us, dear readers, must answer that question.
