Stability is understood more as a sign of stagnation than reliability, and enterprises that do not change and do not evolve are commonly regarded as fossilized. Increasing globalization processes often force today’s enterprises to make organizational changes, but the effectiveness of these processes relies on its organizational culture. This book argues that the problem behind organizational culture is its multilevel structure, including the visible and hidden levels. It addresses difficult questions, such as: Is it better to make thorough, but more painful changes, or to gradually introduce small improvements? It also demonstrates that organizational culture is not a fixed phenomenon: its shaping takes place in stages, and it is essential to take such stages into account in the process of implementing the strategy of an enterprise. Providing a comprehensive insight into "organizational culture" and its relationship to change, this book will be essential reading for professionals involved in business management and IT management throughout the world. Its analyses and suggestions will allow for improved organizational culture and change management in business environments.

Book excerpt: This report by Prof. Dr. Sonja Sackmann, University Bw, Munich, provides an overview of state-of-the-art knowledge with regard to the link between corporate culture and performance as well as approaches that have been used to assess and measure culture in organizations. It discusses different understandings of culture and how they lead to different ways of assessing it. Current methods of culture assessment are compared. The comparison is arranged according to the respective focus on the cultural layer of analyses (e.g., norms, values, beliefs, and assumptions), the origin of dimensions and the purpose of assessment. Most of these approaches are single-method instruments. Along with multiplemethod approaches, they are described and discussed individually, followed by a short assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the report provides a more general evaluation of issues related to the assessment of culture and its link to performance, as well as the most promising approaches. These considerations lead to recommendations for the assessment of corporate culture with links to performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do corporate culture and leadership contribute to a firm's success? And if so, how? How can a company create and develop its corporate culture to compete successfully over the long term? Answers to these questions emerge in case studies of the business practices of six long-established and world-renowned companies: the BMW Group, Deutsche Lufthansa, Grundfos, Henkel, Hilti and Novo Nordisk. In a project initiated by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, researchers investigated these firms and analyzed the central characteristics of corporate success from a culture perspective. The case studies render a detailed picture of each firm's distinctive corporate culture and the factors that shape it. Based on these examples, Sonja A. Sackmann has identified concrete strategies and practices that illustrate how a company's management can make a significant contribution toward developing a dialogue-oriented corporate culture that supports a firm's viability. The appendix provides a checklist for readers who want to develop their firm's culture and practice culturally aware management.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 5 von 5, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (School of Economics and Management), language: English, abstract: In recent years the problems created by shareholder value as a principle of corporate governance became topic of broad discussions. This thesis tries to answer the question if corporate culture could be able to prevent the problems and risks that emerge by shareholder value. In a first step the concepts of shareholder value and corporate culture are analyzed and defined in detail. For the purpose of this thesis the phenomenon of value is explained as sustainable long-term profit for investors. Secondly, the problems of shareholder value as a principle of corporate governance is examined and it is shown that the main issue in this context is the lack of mutual trust between interest groups within corporations and the moral dilemma resulting from this. Thereafter by comparing corporate culture in different countries it is demonstrated that the German approach in corporate culture is the most convenient in order to create mutual trust. Nevertheless the results of this thesis yield that corporate culture has to be developed over time and cannot be introduced a priori by imposing a new corporate identity. In order to create a strong corporate culture which could solve the moral dilemma an environment of mutual trust between employees, executive officers and shareholders has to be established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: As business activities become increasingly global and cross-nationally intertwined, human resource management is no longer defined by national boundaries. In particular, multinational corporations (MNCs) face the challenge of managing their globally dispersed work force effectively. Yet, the field of international human resource management (IHRM) remains an understudied domain, lacking substantial empirical and conceptual research. Also, a prevailing focus on quantitative data suggests a need for deeper qualitative investigations, which allows a more profound assessment of the context in which IHRM unfolds. By addressing IHRM at MNCs, the current empirical work contributes additional scientific insights into this domain. In this respect, the author has selected an approach of inductive comparative case study research, mainly based on qualitative data, that enables the generation of theory through an iterative, data-driven process. This method has been applied to investigate IHRM because it is particularly fruitful when examining new and narrowly developed scientific fields as well as considering contextual conditions. Thus, a multiple case study was conducted through exploratory and semi-structured interviews with managerial employees at six western MNCs which maintain their regional headquarters for South-East Asia in Singapore. The initial guiding objective was to provide a more thorough understanding of the forces that influence IHRM. Due to the exploratory nature of the research set-up, this broad focus has narrowed during the conduct of the study and the subsequent data analysis. Based on the interviews, employee turnover emerged as a key concern for international organizations operating in Singapore. Although a tight local labour market has led to the effect that job turnover is a widespread phenomenon, there is a lack of research addressing this issue and the resulting implications for foreign MNCs. The present study s focus on employee turnover also takes into account the growing importance of local staff for MNCs. Indeed, by acknowledging the critical role that local nationals play at the host country level, it will be increasingly imperative for international organizations to establish effective retention strategies. Despite this obvious significance, the field of managing employee turnover also remains considerably underdeveloped. Building on the results of the conducted multiple case study, the purpose of [...]

Book excerpt: This book deals with the question of whether religious worldviews fulfil an explanatory function in the lives of believers. After rebutting some common objections to this claim, the author proposes to understand the explanatory nature of religious belief along the lines of inference to the best explanation. This proposal is qualified in view of the peculiar nature of religious belief: It is stressed that the type of explanation concerned occurs within the bounds of religion alone, and loses its sense apart from the religious form of life. In unfolding his argument, the author draws heavily on ideas of explanation developed in the philosophy of science, pointing to differences and comparisons between religious and scientific explanations. The author concludes by considering some specific things that theism explains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past two decades corporate governance reform in Europe has been guided by the ‘shareholder value’ model of the firm. That model has been discredited as one of the major causes of the financial and economic crisis. In a new book published by the ETUI an alternative approach to corporate governance is presented by members of the GOODCORP network of researchers and trade unionists. This new approach, entitled the Sustainable Company, draws on both traditional ‘stakeholder’ models of the firm and newer concerns with sustainability. The main elements of the Sustainable Company and the institutions needed to support it are presented. Key themes in the book are the need for worker ‘voice’ in corporate governance and for a binding legislative framework to promote sustainability. Individual chapters deal with the issues of worker involvement, employee shareholding, sustainability-oriented remuneration, international framework agreements, NGO-trade union relationships, reforming financial regulation and carbon taxes and emissions-trading schemes.
