Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book inaugurates a completely new way of thinking about the ethics of marriage and sex. I know of no book on the subject more promising than what McCarthy has achieved here. Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics, Duke University Much has been written in Christian theology about sex, love, and procreation, but their social meanings and contributions are much more rarely addressed. McCarthy now takes this greatly neglected task, eloquently connecting the Christian household to the common good. All those who want to realize the social vocation of the Christian family will find in this work a rich and challenging resource for understanding and for life. Lisa Sowle Cahill, J. Donald Monan Professor of Theology, Boston College Drawing on his own experience of learning how to be a husband and father, David Matzko McCarthy offers wonderfully incisive and readable reflections on the habits of the household--a neighborly space which resists consumerism--and enables sexual relationships to be ordinary, meaningful, and passionate. If you think that all that Christian theology has to say about sex and relationships is twaddle about complementarity and family values, then this is the book for you. Gerard Loughlin, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mortification of the Flesh, Puritan pastor Christopher Love shows believers who are raised to new life in Christ how to remove the residue of sin which once reigned over us. With keen insight, Love teaches us to discern the genuine marks of true mortification from self-serving and counterfeit motives that lie camouflaged as grace. He then provides a wide array of practical helps for cooperating with the Holy Spirit's work of subduing the vitality and vigor of our worldly corruptions. Pastor Love concludes with additional counsel for rooting out the troublesome sins of lust, pride, and anger. Originally published in 1654, this classic work has been meticulously edited to benefit a new generation of Christian readers. Archaic language has been gently modernized, and helpful footnotes have been added to aid the reader. This edition includes a biographical preface and review questions designed to facilitate group discussion or personal reflection.

Book excerpt: Have you met the real Jesus—the One who is wild enough to set you free? Too many people settle for relating to Jesus merely as a comfortable friend and companion, when what we all need is an untamed Savior, a fearless champion tough enough to conquer our shame and compelling enough for us to follow him without hesitation. I finally realized my caricature of Jesus wasn’t big enough to calm my anxiety or heal my wounds or defeat the wickedness in our world. Pretending Jesus is less than He is resulted in someone I wasn’t compelled to worship. So I began a journey to discover the whole Jesus—including the seemingly rough and wild parts—revealed in the Bible. And I found Him to be bigger and better than I ever dreamed. —Lisa Harper Through a powerful blend of storytelling and biblical insights, Lisa Harper invites you to engage with the Jesus of the gospels, a person so provocative that no one left an encounter with Him unchanged. Pharisees fumed, paralytics turned cartwheels, and pariahs found love and acceptance. Come meet the Jesus who is both safe and strong—and learn how this radical Redeemer can liberate you to live and love with abandon. Includes questions for group discussion or personal reflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's Domestic Economies explores representations of female subjectivity in Shakespearean drama from a refreshingly new perspective, situating The Taming of the Shrew, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Othello, and Measure for Measure in relation to early modern England's nascent consumer culture and competing conceptions of property. Drawing evidence from legal documents, economic treatises, domestic manuals, marriage sermons, household inventories, and wills to explore the realities and dramatic representations of women's domestic roles, Natasha Korda departs from traditional accounts of the commodification of women, which maintain that throughout history women have been "trafficked" as passive objects of exchange between men. In the early modern period, Korda demonstrates, as newly available market goods began to infiltrate households at every level of society, women emerged as never before as the "keepers" of household properties. With the rise of consumer culture, she contends, the housewife's managerial function assumed a new form, becoming increasingly centered around caring for the objects of everyday life—objects she was charged with keeping as if they were her own, in spite of the legal strictures governing women's property rights. Korda deftly shows how their positions in a complex and changing social formation allowed women to exert considerable control within the household domain, and in some areas to thwart the rule of fathers and husbands.
