Calculated and experimental results are compared for unsteady flows about airfoils and wings, including several of the cases from the AGARD Standard Aeroelastic Configurations. In two dimensions, the results include AGARD priority cases for the NACA 64A006, NACA 64A010, NACA 0012, and MBB-A3 airfoils. In three dimensions, the results include flows about the F-5 wing, a typical wing, and the AGARD rectangular wings. Viscous corrections are included in some calculations, including those for the AGARD rectangular wing. Book excerpt: Two methods were outlined in detail, and one of them was mechanized, for calculating acoustic ray paths emanating from any point in a non-uniform transonic flow field surrounding a wing. It gives the ray path, and the time, for the minimum time of travel from the acoustic source point to the field point. The resulting velocity potential is also computed. It was necessary to establish an accurate representation of the flow characteristics in the field surrounding the wing. Some ray lines travel over the planform and into the surrounding flow field. It was established that once off the planform they do not return. Available methods predict phase lags based on the assumption that acoustic rays travel in straight lines. The results of the study show this to be a very poor approximation at transonic speeds. Therefore, it is recommended that the method presented in the report be fully developed for the purpose of calculating generalized forces on wings in harmonic motion at transonic speeds. A computer program that would predict these phase lags with reasonable accuracy, and the corresponding flutter characteristics and unsteady aerodynamic loads on a wing responding to externally applied forces, such as gusts, would fill an important gap in the available technology. Book excerpt: An analytical solution is obtained for the perturbation velocity potential for transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations with order-one span-length ratios and small reduced-span-length ratios and equivalent-thickness-length ratios. The analysis is performed with the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The angles of attack which are considered are small but are large enough to insure that the effects of lift in the region far from the configuration are either dominant or comparable with the effects of thickness. The modification to the equivalence rule which accounts for these lift effects is determined. An analysis of transonic flow about lifting wings with large aspect ratios is also presented.

Book excerpt: This article introduces a type of finite difference calculation method for unsteady transonic speed flows associated with wings having control surfaces. The equations which are chosen for use are modified three dimensional nonsteady transonic speed small perturbation geopotential equations. Use is made of time integration methods. Solution forms are approximate factor type resolutions of alternating direction implicit (ADI) type forms. Use is made of this type of method to calculate the unsteady aerodynamic forces associated with F-5 wings in oncoming flows with Mach numbers or 0.9 and 0.925 as well as the unsteady aerodynamic forces associated with control surface oscillations. Comparisons were carried out of calculation results with NLR test results from outside of China and calculation results from XTRAN3S methods. This clearly showed that calculations were successful.

The mach number range was from 0.8 to 1.2, and the maximum reduced frequency (based on centerline half chord) achieved was 0.172. Corresponding pressures were computer using the kernel function method and the doublet/vortex lattice method at subsonic speeds, the sonic box method, and the supersonic mach box method. Both box methods produce point values of potentials that are fitted by surfaces tyo yeld pressures. Comparisomns of the measured and computer pressures show that, in general (and as expected), the computed pressures are higher than the measured values near the leading edge. Also, in general (but unexpected), the computed phase lags between motion of the surface and the pressures generated by the motion are lower than the measure values.
