Book Synopsis Two-Dimensional Separated Flows by : S. M. Belotserkovsky
Download or read book Two-Dimensional Separated Flows written by S. M. Belotserkovsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-Dimensional Separated Flows provides a systematic presentation of the theory of separated flow around bodies. The main classes of aerodynamic problems of plane-parallel flow around bodies are described, and the steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and statistical characteristics of a trailing wake are determined. Numerical methods based on the synthesis of models for non-viscous incompressible flow and boundary layer, algorithms, examples, and systematic comparisons are presented. The book also includes numerical results for the problem of separated flow around fixed, oscillating, and rotating cylinders, in addition to results for separated flow around an aerofoil over a wide range of angles. Two-Dimensional Separated Flows will benefit researchers and students studying aerodynamics, aircraft dynamics, aeroelasticity, and the aerodynamics of building structures.

Book excerpt: In these investigations, simple geometries were studied. Experiments and simulations examined the addition of unsteady motions, of flat plates inclined normal to the flow, and circular cylinders, to the conventional-steady motions of these bodies. The simulations also investigated the (three-dimensional) interactions of vortex rings and the startup flow of a square flat plate oriented normal to the direction of motion (bluff body configuration). Laboratory experiments and measurements on flow past flat plates nominally normal to the direction of motion were performed. The objectives of this research were to elucidate the dynamics of large vortical structure in globally steady and unsteady separated flows, and to develop techniques to modify their behavior and control them for desired effect. In-line accelerations and transverse oscillations of flat plates were evaluated to modify the flow structure. These investigations examined the behavior of the large vortical structures in the resulting unsteady and separated flow, and the associated forces on the flat plate. Vortex methods were used to study two- and three-dimensional flows. The objectives of this research were to develop methods to examine the large-scale separated vortices in the wake of bluff bodies, study the influence of transient motions of the body on these dynamics, and investigate control strategies to produce desired effects.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 37 contributions in which the research work is summarized which has been carried out between 1984 and 1990 in the Priority Research Program "Physik abgeloster Stromungen" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Society). The aim of the Priority Research Program was the inten sive research of the whole range of phenomena associated with separated flows. Physi cal models as well as prediction methods had to be developed based on detailed experi mental investigations. It was in accordance with the main concept of the research program that scientists working on problems of separated flows in different technical areas of application participated in this program. The following fields have been represented in the program: aerodynamics of wings and bodies, aerodynamics of auto mobiles, turbomachinery, ship hydrodynamics, hydraulics, internal flows, heat exchan gers, bio-fluid-dynamics, aerodynamics of buildings and structures. In order to concentrate on problems common in all those areas the emphasis of the program was on basic research dealing with generic geometric configurations showing the fundamental physical phenomena of separated flows. The engagement and enthusiasm of all participating scientists are highly appreciated. The program was organized such that all researchers met once a year to report on the progress of their work. Special thanks ought to go to Prof. E. A. Muller (Gottingen), Prof. H. Oertel jun. (Braunschweig), Dr. W. Schmidt (Dornier), Dr. H. -W. Stock (Dornier) and Dr. B. Wagner (Dornier), who had the functions of referees on those annual meetings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary-layer separation from a rigid body surface is one of the fundamental problems of classical and modern fluid dynamics. The major successes achieved since the late 1960s in the development of the theory of separated flows at high Reynolds numbers are in many ways associated with the use of asymptotic methods. The most fruitful of these has proved to be the method of matched asymptotic expansions, which has been widely used in mechanics and mathematical physics. There have been many papers devoted to different problems in the asymptotic theory of separated flows and we can confidently speak of the appearance of a very productive direction in the development of theoretical hydrodynamics. This book will present this theory in a systematic account. The book will serve as a useful introduction to the theory, and will draw attention to the possibilities that application of the asymptotic approach provides.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms and Identification of Unsteady Separation Development and Remediation by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady flow separation represents a highly complex and important area of study within fluid mechanics. The extent of separation and specific time scales over which it occurs are not fully understood and has significant consequences in numerous industrial applications such as helicopters, jet engines, hydroelectric turbines and wind turbines. A direct consequence of unsteady separation is the erratic movement of the separation point which causes highly dynamic and unpredictable loads on an airfoil. Current computational models underestimate the aerodynamic loads due to the inaccurate prediction of the emergence and severity of unsteady flow separation especially in response to a sudden change in the effective angle of attack. To capture the complex flow phenomena over wind turbine blades during stall development, a scaled three-dimensional non-rotating blade model is designed to be dynamically similar to a rotating full-scale NREL 5MW wind turbine blade. A time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) investigation of flow behavior during the stall cycle examines the processes of stall development and flow reattachment. The flow fields are examined through the application of Eulerian techniques such as proper orthogonal decomposition and empirical mode decomposition to capture unsteady separation characteristics within the flow field. Then, for a higher order description, coherent structures such as vortices and material lines are resolved to fully characterize the flow during a full pitching cycle in a Lagrangian framework. The Eulerian and Lagrangian methods described in the present analysis is extended to investigate the spanwise characteristics within the root section of a three dimensional airfoil. Furthermore, statistical information of the separation point is pursued along four spanwise positions during two cases of unsteady separation. The results of the study describe a critical role of surface vorticity accumulation in unsteady separation and reattachment. Evaluation of the unsteady characteristics of the shear layer reveal evidence that the build-up and shedding of surface vorticity directly influence the dynamic changes in separation point. The quantitative characterization of surface vorticity and shear layer stability enables improved aerodynamic design, but also has broader implications on the larger discipline of unsteady fluid dynamics. ú
