Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author introduces the concept of unsteady aerodynamics and its underlying principles. He provides the readers with a comprehensive review of the fundamental physics of free and forced unsteadiness, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers modern topics related to the developments made in recent years, especially in relation to wing flapping for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in aerodynamics and also serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references. The treatment of these modern topics has been completely revised end expanded for the new edition. It now includes new numerical examples, a section on the ground effect, and state-space representation.

This book was released on 1994-04-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the symposium was to gather fellow researchers, colleagues and friends of Professor William R Sears, a member of the National Academy of Science and the Academy of Engineering, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Professor Sears is a leader in Aerospace Science and Aerodynamics research and the symposium was held in honour of his work in these areas. The symposium focussed on four areas in aeronautical science in which Professor Sears has made major contributions. These are wing design, unsteady aerodynamics and separation, aeroacoustics and self-correcting wind tunnels.

Book Synopsis Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Solution of the Flow Over a Thick Supercritical Airfoil with Strong Shock-induced Separation by : Don W. Kinsey
Download or read book Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Solution of the Flow Over a Thick Supercritical Airfoil with Strong Shock-induced Separation written by Don W. Kinsey and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for transonic flow over a thick supercritical airfoil with strong shock-induced separation on both the upper and lower surfaces. The separated flow region extends from the shock (approximately 50% chord) to the trailing edge on both surfaces. The report first reviews the processes involved in producing a computational solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a two-dimensional airfoil in a perfect gas. A brief development of the Navier-Stokes equations is provided. The solution algorithm used (an explicit predictor-corrector method) is developed and described. An algebraic turbulence model used to model the turbulent Reynolds stresses is described and the need for such a model is discussed. A hyperbolic, two-dimensional procedure for producing a computational grid (mesh) is also described. The boundary conditions imposed at the outer regions of the computational domain (farfield) and at the airfoil surface are discussed and described. The second part of the report discusses the treatment of the eddy viscosity development through the shock, in the separated regions over the airfoil and in the near wake. This work was critical for obtaining a successful solution on the very difficult test case chosen. Modifications to an algebraic eddy viscosity model to include the effects of the thickness of the separated flow region downstream of the shock are described. Keywords: Transonic aerodynamics; Separated flow. (edc).

Book Synopsis Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics by : J. Gordon Leishman
Download or read book Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics written by J. Gordon Leishman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are highly capable and useful rotating-wing aircraft with roles that encompass a variety of civilian and military applications. Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

Book Synopsis Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics with CD Extra by : Gordon J. Leishman
Download or read book Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics with CD Extra written by Gordon J. Leishman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an internationally recognized teacher and researcher, this book provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft such as tilt rotors and autogiros. The text begins with a unique technical history of helicopter flight, and then covers basic methods of rotor aerodynamic analysis, and related issues associated with the performance of the helicopter and its aerodynamic design. It goes on to cover more advanced topics in helicopter aerodynamics, including airfoil flows, unsteady aerodynamics, dynamic stall, and rotor wakes, and rotor-airframe aerodynamic interactions, with final chapters on autogiros and advanced methods of helicopter aerodynamic analysis. Extensively illustrated throughout, each chapter includes a set of homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thoroughly revised and updated text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.
