Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aim of developing a fast and accurate computer code for predicting the aerodynamic forces needed for a flutter analysis, some basic concepts in computational transonics are reviewed. The unsteady transonic flow past airfoils in rigid body motion is adequately described by the potential flow equation as long as the boundary layer remains attached. The two dimensional unsteady transonic potential flow equation in quasilinear form with first order radiation boundary conditions is solved by an alternating direction implicit scheme in an airfoil attached sheared parabolic coordinate system. Numerical experiments show that the scheme is very stable and is able to resolve the higher nonlinear transonic effects for filter analysis within the context of an inviscid theory.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flutter analysis is performed for a MBB A-3 supercritical airfoil at transonic Mach numbers. Two degrees of freedom, pitching and plunging, are considered. The unsteady aerodynamic data are obtained by using two separate transonic aerodynamic computational codes: (1) LTRAN2 based on the time integration method and (2) STRANS2 and UTRANS2 based on the harmonic analysis method. The steady aerodynamic results are shown in the form of upper and lower surface pressure curves. The unsteady aerodynamic coefficients are obtained and tabulated for various values of low reduced frequency by pitching the MBB A-3 airfoil about the quarter chord axis. For the case of zero mean angle of attack, the coefficients obtained by the two computer codes are directly compared and discussed. At design Mach number of 0.765 and zero mean angle of attack, flutter results are obtained by both methods and compared. They are presented as plots of flutter speed and the corresponding reduced frequency vs. one of the four parameters: airfoil - air mass ratio; position of mass center; position of elastic axis; and plunge-to-pitch frequency ratio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory and numerical solution method are presented for the problem of two-dimensional unsteady transonic flow about thin airfoils undergoing harmonic oscillation. The theory is based on a treatment of the unsteady flow as a small perturbation on the non-linear steady flow. The governing equations for the steady and unsteady perturbation potentials are of mixed elliptic/hyperbolic type and are solved by the mixed differencing line relaxation technique of Murman and Cole. Detailed steady and unsteady calculations are performed and compared when possible to available experimental data. The solution procedure is found to be highly efficient and promises further improvements in efficiency through the use of extrapolation schemes. Also the method can be generalized in a straightforward manner to perform calculations with supersonic freestreams and three-dimensional finite wing calculations. (Author).

This book was released on 1992 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prediction of unsteady pressure distributions is an important step towards analyzing the flutter characteristics of an airplane. For this purpose, the TRANAIR code, originally developed for predicting steady transonic flow past bodies of complex geometry, was extended to handle unsteady problems, in which the unsteady solution could be viewed as a harmonic perturbation to the steady transonic flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard textbooks on aerodynamics usually omit any discussion of un steady aerodynamics or, at most, consider it only in a single chapter, based on two justifications. The first is that unsteady aerodynamics should be regarded as a specialized subject required "only" in connection with understanding and an alyzing aeroelastic phenomena such as flutter and gust response, and therefore should be dealt with in related specialist books. The second reason appears to be reluctance to discuss aerodynamics with the inclusion of the time-dependent terms in the conservation equations and the boundary conditions for fear that added complications may discourage the reader. We take the opposite view in this book and argue that a full understanding of the physics of lift generation is possible only by considering the unsteady aerody namics of the starting vortex generation process. Furthermore, certain "steady" flows are inherently unsteady in the presence of flow separation, as for example the unsteady flow caused by the Karman vortex shedding downstream of a cylin der and "static" airfoil stall which is an inherently unsteady flow phenomenon. Therefore, it stands to reason that a unified treatment of aerodynamics that yields steady-state aerodynamics as a special case offers advantages. This rea soning is strengthened by the developments in computational fluid dynamics over the past forty years, which showed that accurate steady-state solutions can be obtained efficiently by solving the unsteady flow equations.
