Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Demonic Desires, Ishay Rosen-Zvi examines the concept of yetzer hara, or evil inclination, and its evolution in biblical and rabbinic literature. Contrary to existing scholarship, which reads the term under the rubric of destructive sexual desire, Rosen-Zvi contends that in late antiquity the yetzer represents a general tendency toward evil. Rather than the lower bodily part of a human, the rabbinic yetzer is a wicked, sophisticated inciter, attempting to snare humans to sin. The rabbinic yetzer should therefore not be read in the tradition of the Hellenistic quest for control over the lower parts of the psyche, writes Rosen-Zvi, but rather in the tradition of ancient Jewish and Christian demonology. Rosen-Zvi conducts a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the some one hundred and fifty appearances of the evil yetzer in classical rabbinic literature to explore the biblical and postbiblical search for the sources of human sinfulness. By examining the yetzer within a specific demonological tradition, Demonic Desires places the yetzer discourse in the larger context of a move toward psychologization in late antiquity, in which evil—and even demons—became internalized within the human psyche. The book discusses various manifestations of this move in patristic and monastic material, from Clement and Origin to Antony, Athanasius, and Evagrius. It concludes with a consideration of the broader implications of the yetzer discourse in rabbinic anthropology.

Book excerpt: A debut novel for fans of Sarah Perry and Kate Morton: when a young woman is tasked with safeguarding a natural history collection as it is spirited out of London during World War II, she discovers her new manor home is a place of secrets and terror instead of protection. In August 1939, thirty-year-old Hetty Cartwright arrives at Lockwood Manor to oversee a natural history museum collection whose contents have been taken out of London for safekeeping. She is unprepared for the scale of protecting her charges from party guests, wild animals, the elements, the tyrannical Major Lockwood, and Luftwaffe bombs. Most of all, she is unprepared for the beautiful and haunted Lucy Lockwood. For Lucy, who has spent much of her life cloistered at Lockwood, suffering from bad nerves, the arrival of the museum brings with it new freedoms. But it also resurfaces memories of her late mother and nightmares in which Lucy roams Lockwood, hunting for something she has lost. When the animals appear to move of their own accord and exhibits go missing, Hetty and Lucy begin to wonder what exactly it is that they might need protection from. And as the disasters mount, it is not only Hetty’s future employment that is in danger but her own sanity. There’s something, or someone, in the house. Someone stalking her through its darkened corridors . . .

Book excerpt: Iris and Steven Finz have the uncanny knack of getting people to talk about intimate details of their sex lives. For more than a decade, they have been interviewing people from all segments of society and, with the permission of their subjects, passing the stories along to their readers. Their books about the sexual experiences and fantasies of real people have become standard night table fare in bedrooms all around the world. Readers use them, not only to put erotic sparks into their own relationships, but also to develop a better understanding of the sexual behavior of others. In Unspoken Desires, the Finzes describe the secret erotic thoughts and practices of people who are unwilling to discuss them with their partners. They relate the story of an architect who dreams of being the prize in a poker game, forced to provide sexual services to the winners each time her husband loses; an office worker who invested two weeks' salary in a complicated sex machine and spends his lunch hours watching women amuse themselves with it; a housewife who has a clandestine lesbian affair with a childhood friend, another who dreams of being a high-priced call girl, and a third who keeps a collection of erotic toys with which to satisfy herself when her military husband fails to do so. They tell of a real estate broker who once auditioned for a role in a porno movie; a computer nerd who sends strangers videotapes he has secretly made of himself and his wife having sex; and a public defender who is happily married, but spends her evenings in mutual masturbation sessions with a female friend. In all, they present a total of 29 stories that are likely to change your ideas about what is normal and what nice people do. "We make passionate love every night, and every time we do, I visualize my husband with my cousin. It's gotten to the point where I don't think I can enjoy our lovemaking without picturing the two of them." -Elizabeth, 28 year old legal secretary "I liked the way they called me 'Slave' and ordered me around. I even liked calling them 'Mistress.' Sometimes, when I'm with my wife, I close my eyes and remember that glorious afternoon when I was a sex slave to three young women, one right after another." -Artie, 42 year old steel worker "I kept my hair cut short and took every possible opportunity to pass myself off as a boy. Even in college, I would take a bus to the next town and walk shirtless in the streets on warm days." -Colleen, 27 year old designer "I still keep the window shades open. I still know that every time Maureen and I are making it the chances are our friends and neighbors are watching every move we make. I still perform for them a little and try to get Maureen into spots that will give them the maximum view." -Karl, 31 year old auto mechanic "Whenever I get one of those basketball players on my table, you can't imagine how magnificent these men look and what effect they have on me. My head is filled with thoughts of all the erotic things I could do if I weren't so inhibited." -Roberta, 48 year old massage therapist

Book excerpt: Named one of 10 Best New Management Books for 2022 by Thinkers50 A Wall Street Journal Bestseller "...this guide provides readers with much more than just early careers advice; it can help everyone from interns to CEOs." — a Financial Times top title You've landed a job. Now what? No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules—the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Until now. In this practical guide, Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and Harvard career adviser, demystifies the unspoken rules of work. Ng distills the wisdom he has gathered from over five hundred interviews with professionals across industries and job types about the biggest mistakes people make at work. Loaded with frameworks, checklists, and talking points, the book provides concrete strategies you can apply immediately to your own situation and will help you navigate inevitable questions, such as: How do I manage my time in the face of conflicting priorities? How do I build relationships when I’m working remotely? How do I ask for help without looking incompetent or lazy? The Unspoken Rules is the only book you need to perform your best, stand out from your peers, and set yourself up for a fulfilling career.

Book excerpt: In January 2004, daytime television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan launched their book club and sparked debate about the way people in Britain, from the general reader to publishers to the literati, thought about books and reading. The Richard & Judy Book Club Reader brings together historians of the book, literature scholars, and specialists in media and cultural studies to examine the effect of the club on reading practices and the publishing and promotion of books. Beginning with an analysis of the book club's history and its ongoing development in relation to other reading groups worldwide including Oprah's, the editors consider issues of book marketing and genre. Further chapters explore the effects of the mass-broadcast celebrity book club on society, literature and its marketing, and popular culture. Contributors ask how readers discuss books, judge value and make choices. The collection addresses questions of authorship, authority and canon in texts connected by theme or genre including the postcolonial exotic, disability and representations of the body, food books, and domesticity. In addition, book club author Andrew Smith shares his experiences in a fascinating interview.

Through letters to his daughters that feel personal to all of us, John Sowers encourages us to release these unspoken words of love so there are no doubts in our relationships nor regrets in our lives. "Many of us go through life with words and feelings stranded in our hearts. Words we deeply feel but never say. Sometimes we never have the chance. We don't always get to say goodbye. We don't always know when it will be our last hug, high five, smile, laugh, or 'I love you.' All we have is today, now, and what we do in this one, shining moment." So many of us rarely share our hearts or speak those deep, hidden sentiments—but why? John Sowers began writing letters to his three daughters to show how much he loved them and to encourage them in their daily lives. These moving and eloquent letters remind all of us how important it is to share the contents of our heart now. Say All the Unspoken Things: Covers the topics of bravery, wonder, beauty, kindness, romance, and God's patient love Helps us find our stranded words to speak more freely to those whom we love Moves us from a shallow life to one with deeper meaning and fulfilling relationships While John wrote these letters to his daughters, this beautiful book often feels as though he is speaking directly to readers. These love letters will echo in your own heart, reminding you of your Father in heaven, who loves you and is for you. A treasure for anyone seeking to create a legacy of love in their relationships, you can seize every precious moment you have to say all the unspoken things.

Jen Hansen, Kittie Spears, and Cynthia Nichols have been friends since childhood. They are now approaching forty and their lives have changed, but their insular East Texas town has not. They stay sane by drinking wine in the afternoons, dishing about other women in the neighborhood, and bonding over the heartache of their own encroaching middle age and raising ungrateful teens. Then Will Harding moves into one of the grandest homes in town. Mysterious and charming, he seems like the answer to each woman’s prayers. He’s a source of fascination for Jen, Kittie, and Cynthia, but none of them are ready for the way Will disrupts their lives. As Will grows closer to all three women, their fascination twists into obsession, threatening their friendships and their families. When he abruptly pulls away, each woman scrambles to discover the source of his affection. But what they’ll uncover is far more sinister and deadly than any of them could have ever imagined.
