Book excerpt: The book focuses on two issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of flow in unsaturated porous media. In the first part numerical solution of the governing equations is discussed, with particular emphasis on the spatial discretization of highly nonlinear permeability coefficient. The second part deals with large scale flow in heterogeneous porous media of binary structure. Upscaled models are developed and it is shown that the presence of material heterogeneities may give rise to additional non-equilibrium terms in the governing equations or to hysteresis in the averaged constitutive relationships.

It targets Master and PhD students who need to gain fundamental understanding the impact of confinement on transport and phase change processes. The book gives brief overviews of topics like thermodynamics, capillarity and fluid mechanics in order to launch the reader smoothly into the realm of porous media. In-depth discussions are given of phase change phenomena in porous media, single phase flow, unsaturated flow and multiphase flow. In order to make the topics concrete the book contains numerous example calculations. Further, as much experimental data as possible is plugged in to give the reader the ability to quantify phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stochastic Methods for Flow in Porous Media: Coping with Uncertainties explores fluid flow in complex geologic environments. The parameterization of uncertainty into flow models is important for managing water resources, preserving subsurface water quality, storing energy and wastes, and improving the safety and economics of extracting subsurface mineral and energy resources. This volume systematically introduces a number of stochastic methods used by researchers in the community in a tutorial way and presents methodologies for spatially and temporally stationary as well as nonstationary flows. The author compiles a number of well-known results and useful formulae and includes exercises at the end of each chapter. - Balanced viewpoint of several stochastic methods, including Greens' function, perturbative expansion, spectral, Feynman diagram, adjoint state, Monte Carlo simulation, and renormalization group methods - Tutorial style of presentation will facilitate use by readers without a prior in-depth knowledge of Stochastic processes - Practical examples throughout the text - Exercises at the end of each chapter reinforce specific concepts and techniques - For the reader who is interested in hands-on experience, a number of computer codes are included and discussed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most texts on computational methods are borne out of research activities at postgraduate study programs, and this is no exception. After being introduced to the boundary element method (BEM) (then referred to as the boundary integral equation method (BIEM)) in 1981 by Prof. Jim Liggett of Cornell University, a number of graduate students and myself under his supervision took active interest in the development of the theory and its application to a wide range of engineering problems. We certainly achieved some amount of success. A personal desire to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of computational methods prompted one to take related courses in fmite deference method, and to undertake a self-instructed study of variational and fmite element methods. These exposures were not only quite instructive but fruitful, and may have provided the motivation for the current research on the Green element method (GEM) - a name coined by Prof. Liggett in 1987 during my visit as Professor to the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Cornell University. The main objectives of this text are to serve as an instructional material to senior undergraduate and first year graduate students undertaking a course in computational methods, and as a resource material for research scientists, applied mathematicians, numerical analysts, and engineers who may wish to take these ideas to other frontiers and applications.

Book excerpt: In the mid-seventies, a new area of research has emerged in subsurface hydrology, namely sto chastic modeling of flow and transport. This development has been motivated by the recognition of the ubiquitous presence of heterogeneities in natural formations and of their effect upon transport and flow, on the one hand, and by the vast expansion of computational capability provided by elec tronic machines, on the other. Apart from this, one of the areas in which spatial variability of for mation properties plays a cardinal role is of contaminant transport, a subject of growing interest and concern. I have been quite fortunate to be engaged in research in this area from its inception and to wit ness the rapid growth of the community and of the literature on spatial variability and its impact upon subsurface hydrology. In view of this increasing interest, I decided a few years ago that it would be useful to present the subject in a systematic and comprehensive manner in order to help those who wish to engage themselves in research or application of this new field. I viewed as my primary task to analyze the large scale heterogeneity of aquifers and its effect, presuming that the reader already possesses a background in traditional hydrology. This is achieved in Parts 3, 4 and 5 of the text which incorporate the pertinent material.

Book excerpt: This monograph is a definitive work on the theory of unsaturated flow: the flow of subsurface water in zones above the water table. It offers a unique perspective on the application of continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, and kinetic theory to the understanding of these fluid flows in unsaturated porous media. Energy relations, including equilibrium thermodynamics, appear throughout. The partial differential equations of motion are derived using the principle of conservation of momentum. Chapters on instrumental methods and statistical methods of data analysis round out the book. The intended audience includes soil science and engineering professionals concerned with the applications of unsaturated flow and graduate students in hydrology and earth sciences.

It is divided into two major parts. The first part deals with geometry of individual fractures and of fracture networks. The use of the dimensionless density rationalizes the results for the percolation threshold of the networks. It presents the crucial advantage of grouping the numerical data for various fracture shapes. The second part deals mainly with permeability under steady conditions of fractures, fracture networks, and fractured porous media. Again the results for various types of networks can be rationalized by means of the dimensionless density. A chapter is dedicated to two phase flow in fractured porous media.
