During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe’s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? It is a paradox that the Soviet Union, a nation born of revolution, should have encouraged 'official' art which was conservative and conformist, whereas Western Europe, and the USA in particular, should preach traditional values, but have a high art which spoke of dissent.
