The Hamburg WTD tests a slab of hot- mix asphalt submerged in hot water by rolling a steel wheel across its surface. The binders consisted of two unmodified asphalt binders, an air- blown asphalt binder, and eight polymer- modified asphalt binders. The continuous high- temperature performance grades (PG's) ranged from 67 to 77. Two aggregates were used: diabase and limestone. The mixture results using the limestone aggegate could not be used to evaluate the asphalt binders because the Hamburg WTD crushed the limestone aggregate. A test temperature of 58 degrees Celcius was chosen for the diabase mixtures based on trial tests using the air- blown and unmodified PG 70- 22 asphalt binders. It was expected that most of the mixtures with polymer- modified asphalt binders would have greater resistance to moisture damage than the mixture with the unmodified PG 70- 22 asphalt binder because they would provide increased adhesion to the aggregate or create a network within the asphalt that was more resistant to water penetration. However, only one polymer- modified asphalt binder provided a greater resistance at a 5- percent level of significance. Some of the asphalt binders provided significantly different resistances to moisture damage that were not related to differences in cohesive strength as measured by the asphalt binder parameter G*/sin(delta) at 58 degrees Celcius. It was concluded that polymer- modified asphalt binders having the same G*/sin(delta) can provide different adhesive strengths and/or different resistances to water penetration. Reasons for these differences need to be determined.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of this study was to determine if the Superpave high-temperature rheological properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders correlate to asphalt mixture rutting resistance. An emphasis was placed on evaluating polymer-modified asphalt binders with identical (or close) high-temperature performance grades (PG's), but varied polymer chemistries. Eleven asphalt binders were obtained for this study: two unmodified asphalt binders, an air-blown asphalt binder, and eight polymer-modified asphalt binders. High-temperature asphalt binder properties were measured by a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Mixture rutting resistance was measured by repeated shear at constant height (RSCH), and the French Pavement Rutting Tester (French PRT). The first objective was to verify the findings of a previous study using a different aggregate. In the previous study, it was found that the Superpave high-temperature asphalt binder properties correlated to mixture rutting resistance with few outliers, and a change in high-temperature PG from 70 to 76 increased rutting resistance. However, the correlation between RSCH and asphalt binder G*/sind (delta) depended on DSR frequency. The data suggested that a low DSR frequency, such as 0.1 rad/s, might provide a better grading system than the standard DSR frequency of 10.0 rad/s. This would require a change in the current asphalt binder specification. A diabase aggregate was used in a previous study. The data using a second aggregate, a limestone aggregate, in combination with four of the asphalt binders, agreed with the findings from the diabase mixtures. The second objective was to retest the diabase mixtures at 70 degrees Celsius using RSCH. The test temperatures used in the previous study were 50 degrees Celsius for RSCH and 70 degrees Celsius for the French PRT. The polymer-modified asphalt binders had continuous high-temperature PG's ranging from 71 to 77. Therefore, it was recommended that the test temperature for RSCH be increased to 70 degrees Celsius. Again, the correlation between RSCH and G*/sind was dependent on DSR frequency. The data suggested that a low DSR frequency, such as 0.1 rad/s, might provide a better grading system. However, it is not known whether this finding applies to pavements, or is related to the accelerated nature of the RSCH test. Furthermore, G*/sind (delta) at 0.1 rad/s did not clearly provide a better correlation to RSCH than the high-temperature PG's of the asphalt binders. The degree of correlation between the French PRT and G*/sind at 70 degrees Celsius did not depend on DSR frequency, and there was only one outlier. A correlation between the French PRT and high-temperature PG provided no obvious outliers. No changes to the specification are recommended based on the French PRT results.

Book excerpt: In order to properly characterize modified asphalt binders and mixes for Alaskan pavements, this study evaluated properties of 13 asphalt binders typically used in Alaska from three different suppliers, and 10 hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures which were either produced in the lab or collected from existing paving projects in Alaska. Various binder and mixture engineering properties were determined, including true high binder grades, complex modulus (G*), and phase angle ( ́) at high performance temperatures, multiple stress creep recovery rate and compliance, bending beam rheometer stiffness and m-value, Glover-Rowe parameter, T, rheological index, and crossover frequency for binders, and rut depth, critical strain energy release rate (Jc), Indirect tensile (IDT) creep stiffness and strength for mixtures. Binder cracking temperatures were determined using asphalt binder cracking device. Mixture cracking temperatures were determined with IDT creep compliance and strength data. It was found that rutting and cracking resistances of the mixtures with highly modified binders were better than the mixture with unmodified asphalt binder (PG 52-28). Future recommendations for highly modified asphalt binders applications and research were provided based on laboratory testing results and field survey evaluation.

Book excerpt: For quality assurance and quality control purposes, suppliers and users of asphalt binders follow the widely used dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test method (AASHTO T 315, Standard Method of Test for Determining the Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binder Using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)) to capture viscoelastic properties of polymer-modified binders (PMBs) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)-modified binders even though it is designed for unmodified asphalt binders. AASHTO T 315 is inadequate to characterize modified binders because of the relatively small impact of the phase angle and strain levels on the rutting and fatigue factors, respectively. The recently approved multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test (AASHTO T 350, Standard Method of Test for Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) Test of Asphalt Binder Using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)) results can better relate the laboratory-based and field rutting of PMBs and additive-modified binders. In the current study, Superpave and MSCR tests were performed to evaluate viscoelastic properties of selected asphalt binders certified in Arkansas. A total of 32 binders were tested in the laboratory. Among these, 8 were unmodified binders, 18 were PMBs, and 6 were RAP-modified binders. The nonrecoverable compliance and MSCR percent recovery data of tested binders were analyzed for the grading purpose and establishing the MSCR percent recovery criteria for local service temperature and traffic conditions. The developed guidelines are expected to be helpful for transportation agencies in Arkansas to adopt the MSCR test method in their quality control processes.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavement is subject to stresses induced by heavy traffic loading and thermal variations during its service life. Nowadays, increasing the permissible axle loads along with the impact of climate change have caused premature failure in the flexible pavement. Enhancing the properties of asphalt binders can reduce these distresses. Among the available options, finding a cost-effective alternative for improving the used binders is a challenge to overcome. Asphalt binder modification using nano-size materials has attracted attentions in recent years. Based on this study, nanoclays can improve the properties of asphalt binders, increase the resistance of asphalt to ageing, cracking and rutting, and extend the pavement's service life cycle. The objectives of this work were to investigate the rheological and mechanical properties of nanoclay modified asphalt binders and mixtures. The behaviour of a PG 64-28 asphalt binder modified with 2% and 4% concentration of two organo-montmorillonites was studied. Furthermore, the impact of using nanoclays was investigated in asphalt mixtures' performance. The nanoclays were mixed with the asphalt using a high shear mixer, and their dispersions were analyzed by employing a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) device. A SARA test was conducted on the modified and unmodified binders to examine the fraction composition of saturates, asphaltenes, resins and aromatics before and after the addition of nanoclays. Also, the neat binder and the nanoclay modified binders were subjected to short-term ageing using a rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) and long-term aged using a pressure ageing vessel (PAV). The following rheological properties of the asphalt binders were investigated: (1) High-temperature performance grading of unaged samples using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), (2) High-temperature performance grading of RTFO-aged samples using a DSR, (3) Intermediate temperature grading of PAV-aged samples using a DSR, (5) Low-temperature performance grading using a bending beam rheometer (BBR), (4) Two-piece healing test using a DSR, (6) Frequency-Sweep tests using a DSR, (7) Mixing and Compaction temperatures using a rotational viscometer, and (8) Mixing and compaction temperatures of modified asphalt binders using a DSR. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures that were analyzed are as follows: (1) Flow and Stability and stability test, (2) Bulk specific gravity test, (3) Theoretical maximum specific gravity on loose mixtures, (4) Fatigue and healing behaviour using a four-point bending test and (5) Dynamic Modulus test on Superpave samples. The results obtained from the high-temperature grading showed that the addition of 4% organo-montmorillonites increases the high-temperature grade from 64 to 70. Also, no change was observed in the low-temperature performance of the modified samples. The two-piece healing test showed promising results for nano-modified samples, with significant improvements in the initial healing proportional to the concentration of nanoclays in the binder. The Frequency-sweep analysis, utilizing a master curve, showed an improvement in ageing resistance by adding Montmorillonites. Furthermore, the SARA test results indicated that the nanoclay modified mixtures were storage stable. The asphalt mixture samples demonstrated, by repeated flexural bending using a four-point bending apparatus, increased stiffness and life cycles of the organo-montmorillonite modified asphalt mixtures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years an increased use of polymers has occurred to modify asphalt binders, mainly to decrease pavement rutting but also to improve binder failure strain in direct tension. Whereas all of these effects positively impact the durability of polymermodified pavements, a need exists to quantify these improvements and the duration in the presence of oxidative aging. This research evaluated the durability of polymer modified asphalt (PMA) through a number of determinations that included the characterization of the original binder property and pavement-aged binder for modified and unmodified binders. Changes in styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified binder properties from oxidation were analyzed using dynamic shear rheometry, ductility, and force ductility. Previous literature reports using size exclusion chromatography showed that degradation of the molecular weight profile of SBS accompanied the loss of PMA ductility. Yet base binder embrittlement also occurred, as evidenced by ductility and force ductility. Testing aged PMA binders at higher temperatures to soften the base binder restored the polymer modulus to the force ductility measurements as did blending with a softer deasphalted oil. These measurements indicate that the more significant cause of PMA degradation with aging is base binder embrittlement rather than polymer degradation. Sixteen pavements in 11 Texas Districts, plus four MnRoad pavements were evaluated in order to obtain a more detailed profile of binder oxidation in pavements. Slices of each core provided detail on binder oxidation and air voids. The data confirm that binders can oxidize at least several inches into the pavement. However, oxidation also can be significantly slowed, apparently by very low accessible air voids. Interestingly, the data indicate that the air voids that are relevant to the binder at a specific depth of the pavement are those in the immediate vicinity of the binder; low air voids above or below the binder do not seem to significantly affect the binder oxidation rate. Furthermore, that binders oxidize inches below the surface shows that temperature conducts well into the pavement, consistent with a heat conduction model that is used to calculate ground temperatures as a function of depth.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of investigations on the rheological properties of modified asphalt binders and their influence on the performance of asphalt mixes. Asphalt mixes with modified binders such as styrene butadiene styrene polymer, crumb rubber, natural rubber, and waste plastics were evaluated for their rheological properties and compared to the properties of asphalt mixes with unmodified VG30 (viscosity grade) asphalt binder. The dynamic modulus values and rutting characteristics of the asphalt mixes were studied with due consideration to different levels of aging and temperature variations. Studies on the rheological properties showed that the energy dissipated by unmodified asphalt (VG30) binder is higher than that of modified asphalt binders. Long-term aged natural rubber and waste plastic modified asphalt binders showed significant increase in the properties compared to unmodified asphalt binder (VG30). Reduced temperature susceptibility of polymer modified asphalt binder showed that only polymer modification can enhance both high temperature rutting resistance and low temperature thermal cracking resistance of asphalt mixes. The transient nature of polymer modified asphalt mix from viscoelastic solid-like to viscoelastic fluid-like condition is significantly shifted to higher temperature compared to that of the mix with unmodified asphalt binder. Aging and rutting indices showed that rubber modified asphalt mixes are highly susceptible to aging. Statistical analysis of test results showed that the process of modification of asphalt binder, aging, and temperature during the test influence the rheological and rutting characteristics of asphalt mixes significantly. Correlation between the asphalt binder properties and its influence on the rutting resistance are found to be statistically significant. The analysis using least significant difference showed that polymer modified asphalt binder significantly improves the aging and rutting resistance of asphalt mixes compared to unmodified asphalt binder.

This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the changes in the structural characteristics of paving layers with season and asphalt binders type is essential in predicting how well the pavement responds to traffic loads and thus how long it will last. This paper presents a small scale investigation on the seasonal variations in the structural characteristics of pavement layers constructed employing polymer modified asphalt binders. These variations are compared to those of an unmodified binder. Illustrated are the influences of asphalt binder type and seasonal temperature variations on: One) center deflection (D0) measured by the falling weight deflectometer (FWD), Two) in situ asphalt concrete modulus (EAC), Three) in situ base course modulus (Eb) and Four) in situ subgrade resilient modulus (MmR) Analysis of results for the two polymer modified sectins and the three unmodified onctrol section used in this study indicates that EAC is the parameter most affected by the change in temperature followed by D0 and Eb . The in situ asphalt concrete modulus (EAC) of the polymer modified sections has shown less sensitivity to temperature changes than other three control sections, especially at high temperature levels (35 0 C -45 0 C). Variations in Eb with temperature are believed to be associated indirectly with variations in EAC with temperature. Changes in EAC with temperature result in changes in stress levels imposed on the underlying layer that causes variations in Eb . Temperature adjustment factors for D0, EAC and Eb are provided for both polymer modified and unmodified sections. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872978.
