Book excerpt: "He was an undefinable formula. An accelerant lighting me up." Dawson Langley is living three separate lives and hiding secrets from those he loves most. Trying to keep his worlds apart takes every ounce of concentration he has. So, returning to New London and discovering Violet Banner managing the bed and breakfast he calls home isn't just a problem, it's a catastrophe because she's the one person who's always seen right through him. When Violet first met Dawson, he was a broody-bad-boy who branded her heart without ever touching her. Five years later, she thinks she's finally moved on, but one torturous touch proves nothing has changed. Except for the science lab she's built in the garage and the shadows lurking around him. As the clandestine activity surrounding his international boat race, tightens around him, Dawson does everything he can to keep Violet out of harm's way. This means the tantalizing connection that's dangled between them for years will have to remain what it's always been: a dream that won't come true. Everything changes when Violet stumbles upon the truth and turns the storm that's coming in her direction. Only one thing is certain, there's nothing Dawson won't do to keep her safe...even if it means making her his. A daring and decadent romantic suspense from award-winning author, LJ Evans, that whirls the reader around the globe and back. Inspired by Daughtry's "What About Now," comes a determined scientist and a broody bad-boy-turned-hero who just might leave their mark on you in this adventurous, standalone, slow burn. "I wasn't supposed to touch her this way. To have her this way. She wasn't ever supposed to be mine."

Book excerpt: From undercover robots to shape shifting soldiers, the twenty-one stories in this wide-ranging anthology explore what happens when the mask comes off. We all wear masks, whether they are the literal costumes of superheroes and bank robbers or the metaphorical shrouds that obscure our real selves. Unmaksed explores these attempts to conceal, the mysteries beneath, and the price we pay when they’re stripped away. Authors ask what happens when your secret identity is revealed. When the monster is unleashed. When the superhero’s child has no power. When Death himself is caught unawares. Here are twenty-one tales of speculation and fantasy that center on magical masks, gas masks, death masks, superheroes, secret identities, disguised robots, alien symbionts, a Napoleonic thief, a swindling demon, and even a hidden clown.

Book excerpt: Acting with masks is one of the most ancient stage techniques still in use today. Masking Unmasked is a basic guide to using this ancient art to develop character and movement in four sections that correspond to mask size: Full-Face Masks, Clowning, Bag Masks, and Half-Face Masks. Each section addresses fundamental acting principles and shows how the ancient technique can be applied to the contemporary stage. It is the perfect book to use as background to traditional, non-masked acting principles. For instance, mask acting provides a great way of strengthening core acting skills. Actors in masks experience the primary goal of acting because they are required to tap into profound physical, vocal, emotional, and psychological transformations in the course of creating a character. In addition, masking promotes honest, believable, and detailed work. Illustrated profusely throughout, the hands-on exercises developed by Simon teach actors to shift cleanly between beats, execute moment-to-moment specificity, unleash creative impulses, take risks and expand character range, power and vulnerability. Masking Unmasked is a book of ancient acting techniques that are indispensable for the actor of today.

Book excerpt: In a city known as home to some of the sporting world's biggest stars, few have ever shined as brightly as the Philadelphia Flyers' Bernie Parent, and this autobiography shares how he became one of the most sensational goalies in NHL history. The catchphrase "Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent" became ubiquitous in Philadelphia as Parent won two Vezina Trophies as the league's top goaltender, two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, and two Stanley Cup championships, but this work shows how his on-the-ice exploits were only a part of his amazing story. After suffering a career-ending eye injury in 1979, Parent's life took a turn for the worse, a time during which he battled alcoholism and watched his marriage end in divorce. In the end, however, facing the fears that had plagued him all his life led Parent to find solace and happiness once again. In "Unmasked," Parent traces his life and career from his days as a youngster learning to skate to his current role as a Flyers ambassador and public speaker. Featuring rare photos from his personal archive and accompanying text from legendary Philadelphia sports columnist Stan Hochman, this life story gives Parent's millions of fans a never-before-seen glimpse into the life of a hockey icon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this creative and engaging reading, Richard Kuhns explores the ways in which Decameron'ssexual themes lead into philosophical inquiry, moral argument, and aesthetic and literary criticism. As he reveals the stories' many philosophical insights and literary pleasures, Kuhns also examines Decameronin the context of the nature of storytelling, its relationship to other classic works of literature, and the culture of trecento Italy. Stories and storytelling are to be interpreted in terms of a wider cultural context that includes masks, metamorphosis, mythic themes, and character analysis, all of which Boccaccio explores with wit and subtlety. As a storyteller, Boccaccio represents himself as literary pimp, conceiving the relationship between storyteller and audience in sexual terms within a tradition that goes back as far as Socrates' conversations with the young Athenians. As a whole, Boccaccio's great collection of stories creates a trenchant criticism of the ideas that dominated his social and cultural world. Addressed as it is to women who were denied opportunities for education, the author's stories create a university of wise and culturally observant texts. He teaches that comic, religious, sexual, and artistic themes can be seen to function as metaphors for hidden and often dangerous unorthodox thoughts. Kuhns suggests that Decameronis one of the first self-conscious creations of what we today call "a total work of art." Throughout the stories, Boccaccio creates a detailed picture of the Florentine trecento cultural world. Giotto, Buffalmacco, and other great painters of Boccaccio's time appear in the stories. Their works and the paintings that surround the characters as they prepare to leave the plague-ridden city, with their representations of Dante, Aquinas, and other thinkers, are essential to understanding the ways the stories work with other works of art and illuminate and enlarge interpretations of Boccaccio's book.

Whether they’re on the baseball field or in Nate’s basement devouring the newest issue of their favorite comic book, Dan and Nate are always talking. Until they’re not. After an accident at baseball practice, Nate’s fallen into a coma. And if Dan ever wants to talk to Nate again, he’s got to take a page out of his hero Captain Nexus’s book, and do whatever it takes to save the day. But heroes have powers—and without Nate, all Dan has is a closet stuffed with comics and a best-friend-shaped hole in his heart. There’s no way a regular kid can save the day all on his own. Right?
