Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often look back at changing trends in higher education and call them "bandwagons" (temporary fads that everyone rushes to be part of and "jump on"). While much of the hype and jargon of "The Employability Agenda" may fade from the tip of our tongues (or perhaps be subsumed into the norm) in the mid future, there are two fundamental changes that will not: the digital revolution embedded in changing work and economic practices and the “re-globalisation” of the world that this and other politico-economic changes have brought about. These will continue to be part of how we live and work, so tertiary education will need to take its part in supporting employ-ability far beyond either the timing or scope of preparation for initial employment. Employability is important to local, national and international labour market contexts, parameters and policies. As well as impacting workforces, employability is an essential characteristic of workers. It is very important that employability is understood and enacted as personal employability not just employment of individuals. We have found that employability is defined as much, if not more, by mindset rather than skillset. Part of this mindset involves recognising the unknowns of future work and an even bigger part is recognising our responsibilities as workers and educators lies in shaping our own employability and that of the novice learners and workers in our spaces of influence and communities of practice. In Education for Employability (Volume 2): Learning for Future Possibilities we continue on from the big agenda discussions of Education for Employability (Volume 1): The Employability Agenda to explore education for employability in a variety of spaces: in the context of higher education as an entrance into the workforce, in joining communities of practice and in the lifelong pursuit of employability – preparing people for a portfolio of careers rather than a job-for-life. These two books show how educational leaders, educators, industry partners and thought leaders are imagining and addressing the challenges posed by the current and future changes facing our work, practices and workplaces.

Book excerpt: As the use of remote work has recently skyrocketed, digital transformation within the workplace has gone under a microscope, and it has become abundantly clear that the incorporation of new technologies in the workplace is the future of business. These technologies keep businesses up to date with their capabilities to perform remote work and make processes more efficient and effective than ever before. In understanding digital transformation in the workplace there needs to be advanced research on technology, organizational change, and the impacts of remote work on the business, the employees, and day-to-day work practices. This advancement to a digital work culture and remote work is rapidly undergoing major advancements, and research is needed to keep up with both the positives and negatives to this transformation. The Research Anthology on Digital Transformation, Organizational Change, and the Impact of Remote Work contains hand-selected, previously published research that explores the impacts of remote work on business workplaces while also focusing on digital transformation for improving the efficiency of work. While highlighting work technologies, digital practices, business management, organizational change, and the effects of remote work on employees, this book is an all-encompassing research work intended for managers, business owners, IT specialists, executives, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how digital transformation and remote work is affecting workplaces.

Book excerpt: How the theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming in its historical, social and conceptual contexts. The message from educators, the tech community, and even politicians is clear: everyone should learn to code. To emphasize the universality and importance of computer programming, promoters of coding for everyone often invoke the concept of “literacy,” drawing parallels between reading and writing code and reading and writing text. In this book, Annette Vee examines the coding-as-literacy analogy and argues that it can be an apt rhetorical frame. The theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming beyond a technical level, and in its historical, social, and conceptual contexts. Viewing programming from the perspective of literacy and literacy from the perspective of programming, she argues, shifts our understandings of both. Computer programming becomes part of an array of communication skills important in everyday life, and literacy, augmented by programming, becomes more capacious. Vee examines the ways that programming is linked with literacy in coding literacy campaigns, considering the ideologies that accompany this coupling, and she looks at how both writing and programming encode and distribute information. She explores historical parallels between writing and programming, using the evolution of mass textual literacy to shed light on the trajectory of code from military and government infrastructure to large-scale businesses to personal use. Writing and coding were institutionalized, domesticated, and then established as a basis for literacy. Just as societies demonstrated a “literate mentality” regardless of the literate status of individuals, Vee argues, a “computational mentality” is now emerging even though coding is still a specialized skill.

Today’s students, who are coming of age in a world that is increasingly mediated by smartphones, pads, pods, apps, and the Internet, are even more likely to think of their lives and experiences in terms of stories. Unlocking the Moviemaking Mind explores how our innate abilities as storytellers can be used in the K-12 classroom to stimulate new approaches to learning. Relying on data collected during a multi-year research project in a variety of school settings, this book relies on story and synthesis to present tried and true methods of introducing media making practices in the classroom. Unlocking the Moviemaking Mind also offers strategies for overcoming individual and systematic barriers that educators and administrators are likely to encounter when incorporating storytelling into their curricula. Moreover, the book broaches topics that are especially germane to today’s students, including literacy, motivation, and experiential learning.

Book excerpt: Discover and explore simple ways to teach digital literacy skills throughout the day and across various content areas, without a formal digital literacy curriculum. Digital literacy describes skills and ways of thinking related to the use of technology, including the technical competence to communicate, evaluate and interpret digital information, navigate websites and understand why all these skills are important. All students need these skills to be responsible participants in school and society. However, teaching digital literacy can be challenging for teachers who have many other content standards they must address. In this book, two innovative educators demonstrate how to weave digital literacy skills throughout instruction in small ways, with simple strategies to discuss, model, mentor, build a learning culture and create digital experiences to improve students’ digital literacy skills and habits. The book: • Defines the fundamental elements of digital literacy and why they are important for students to understand. • Offers teaching strategies for integrating digital literacy into lessons across a range of content areas. • Provides case studies of classroom teachers using mini-strategies to improve students’ digital literacy skills and habits. • Includes resources for teachers to use as they develop digital literacy strategies. Through the use of practical examples that all teachers can implement immediately, this book is a useful guide for any teacher working to encourage digital literacy in their students. Audience: Elementary and secondary teachers; instructional coaches; technology leaders; and school library media specialists

There are a variety of learning systems that support innovative digital approaches, and universities and organizations around the world are investing in building their own e-learning platforms. Digital technologies are enabling wider access to education and new markets for student recruitment, resulting in increased income prospects for global higher education institutions. Technology enables numerous data and information sources, which give greater access to information and data. It also enables highly virtual environments, which impact teaching and the classroom. The widespread use and application of digital technologies in the teaching and learning process provoke pedagogical inquiry and mediation. It is in this context that Technologies for Sustainable Global Higher Education focuses on analyzing the application of digital technologies in the teaching–learning process. The chapters in this edited collection seek to answer questions relevant to the context of higher education, such as: What is the concept of digital technologies? How is digital technology used to mediate the learning process? What technologies are used to qualify education in higher education? This book provides answers to these questions by focusing on issues central to improving education through digital technologies, digital learning, and pedagogical practices in digital education. It also provides case studies of higher education institutions.
