Businesses across all sectors now realise that, if they intend on staying competitive in the 21st century, then they must embrace new innovative technologies and methodologies such as AI, automation, digital platforms and Agile. But when too much focus is placed on digital transformation, teams within the organization become overlooked – the uniquely human benefits that arise from a well-functioning, collaborative team become neglected, and the employees themselves become unmotivated and overly dependent upon the quantifiable benefits of technology. In People Before Tech, Duena Blomstrom uncovers the true potential of teams in modern organizations by highlighting the importance of psychological safety. This ground-breaking approach leads to a powerful group dynamic that allows teams to take risks, create and innovate without fear of repercussion. With fascinating research, controversial approaches and an international array of case studies, this book provides practical guidance on how business and technology leaders as well as HR professionals can draw upon psychological safety to create and cultivate satisfied, efficient and high-performing teams within their organization.

Book excerpt: This publication takes a holistic approach to environmental challenges and corresponding responses from IT in general, and service management in particular. It covers not only energy management, but also other environmental concerns, and how service management can contribute to addressing these. It is important that each environmental issue is not tackled in isolation, as there tends to be great interplay between different environmental challenges. The publication is divided into the following sections: (1). Introduction - an overview of the publication's contents, the context of the publication and the intended audience; (2). Changing our Current Viewpoint - is there really a need to act? And if so, at what levels and timescales? Who and what will be the key drivers for change to occur?; (3). The Role of Service Management - how and where does service management play a part in achieving environmental change? Each phase of the ITIL service lifecycle is looked at separately: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and CSI (continual service improvement); (4). The Role of Governance - how and where does governance play a part in achieving environmental change?; (5). Where to Start - practical advice on how to make a start on addressing the issues confronted by organisations. (6). Measuring Environmental Performance - advice on measuring your environmental performance

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Westinghouse Automatic Brake The automatic action of the brake is due to the construction of the triple valve. The primary parts of which are a piston and a slide-valve. A redue tion of pressure in the brake-pipe causes the excess of pressure in the aux iliary reservoir to force the piston of the triple valve down. Moving the slide-valve so as to allow the air in the auxiliary reservoir to pass directly into the brake-cylinder and apply the brakes. When the pressure in the brake-pipe is again increased above that in the auxiliary reservoir. The piston is forced up. Moving the slitleovalve to its former position. Opening communication from the brake-pipe to the auxiliary reservoir, and permitting the air in the brake-cylinder to escape, thus releasing the brakes. Thus it will be seen that any radar/ion a] pressure in {be brake-pipe app/11's (lu bmérs, which is the essential feature of the automatic brake. If the engineer wishes to apply the brakes, he moves the handle of the engi neer's brake-valve to the right, which first closes a valve retaining the pressure in the main reservoir. And then permits a portion of the air in the brake-pipe to escape. To release the brakes. He turns the handle to its former position, which allows the air in the main reservoir to flow into the brake. Pipe. Restoring the pressure and releasing the brakes. A valve. Called the conductor's valve. Is placed in each car. With a cord running the length of the car. And any of the train-men. By pulling this cord, can open the valve, which allows the air to escape from the brake-pipe. Should the train break in two, the air in the brake-pipe escapes, and the brakes are applied to both sections of the train; and should a hose or pipe burst. The brakes are also automatically applied.
