Book excerpt: Learning is often progress-oriented, institutionally driven, and focused on the accumulation of knowledge, skills and behaviour. In contrast, unlearning is directed towards embodied forms of knowledge and the (un)-conscious operation of ways of thinking and doing. Unlearning denotes an active critical investigation of normative structures and practices in order to become aware and get rid of taken-for-granted "truths" of theory and practice. This book shares the process of unlearning, taking art and art institutions as sites for unlearning and Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons as an experimental case.0Unlearning at an art organization has led to collective unlearning exercises that express the conditions, modalities, and implications of a particular group of art workers. The business of running an art institution is irrevocably tied up with the anxiety and stress of constantly "being busy" making things visible in competitive and hierarchical conditions. This busyness causes the habitual undervaluing of what often remains invisible?so-called reproductive works such as cleaning, fixing, and caring. Unlearning processes make way for social transformations that lead towards the culture of equality and difference which we call the culture of the commons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. That something may just be one of your own annoying habits. Perhaps one small flaw - a behaviour you barely even recognise - is the only thing that's keeping you from where you want to be. It may be that the very characteristic that you believe got you where you are - like the drive to win at all costs - is what's holding you back. As this book explains, people often do well in spite of certain habits rather than because of them - and need a "to stop" list rather than one listing what "to do". Marshall Goldsmith's expertise is in helping global leaders overcome their unconscious annoying habits and become more successful. His one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag - but in this book you get his great advice for much less. Recently named as one of the world's five most-respected executive coaches by Forbes, he has worked with over 100 major CEOs and their management teams at the world's top businesses. His clients include corporations such as Goldman Sachs, Glaxo SmithKline, Johnson and Johnson and GE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we meditate, our minds often want to do something other than the meditation instructions we've been taught. When that happens repeatedly, we may feel frustrated to the point of abandoning meditation altogether. Jason Siff invites us to approach meditation in a new way, one that honors the part of us that doesn't want to do the instructions. He teaches us how to become more tolerant of intense emotions, sleepiness, compelling thoughts, fantasies—the whole array of inner experiences that are usually considered hindrances to meditation. The meditation practice he presents in Unlearning Meditation is gentle, flexible, permissive, and honest, and it's been wonderfully effective for opening up meditation for people who thought they could never meditate, as well as for injecting a renewed energy for practice into the lives of seasoned practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative Approaches to Social Justice Education is a book for anyone with an interest in teaching and learning in higher education from a social justice perspective and with a commitment to teaching all students. This text offers a breadth of disciplinary perspectives on how to center difference, power, and systemic oppression in pedagogical practice, arguing that these elements are essential to knowledge formation and to teaching. Transformative Approaches to Social Justice Education is structured as an ongoing conversation among educators who believe that teaching from a social justice perspective is about much more than the type of readings and assignments found on course syllabi. Drawing on the broadest possible definition of curriculum transformation, the volume demonstrates that social justice education is about both educators’ social locations and about course content. It is also about knowing students and teaching beyond the traditional classroom to meaningfully include local communities, social movements, archives, and colleagues in student and academic affairs. Premised on the notion that continuous learning and growth is critical to educators with deep commitments to fostering critical consciousness through their teaching, Transformative Approaches to Social Justice Education offers interdisciplinary and innovative collaborative approaches to curriculum transformation that build on and extend existing scholarship on social justice education. Newly committed and established social justice pedagogues share their experiences taking up the many difficult questions pertaining to what it means for all of us to participate in shaping a more just, shared future.

This collection of essays depicts a journey of unlearning deeply cherished assumptions, and gaining new, difficult understandings of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and global issues in teacher education. Foregrounding learners' own voices and highlighting those intimate moments of awakening through a process-oriented and dialogic approach, this book, in its profoundly moving narrative and critically reflective voices, speaks directly to pre-service and in-service teachers and informs teacher educators' multicultural pedagogical theory and practice. Demonstrating the power of multicultural education through the learner's lens, this compelling and inspirational book is a much-needed text for undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education, multicultural education, curriculum studies, and social foundations of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for prospective secondary teachers, university education and human development faculty and students, and in-service secondary school teachers. The text focuses on the current environment of adolescents. Physical growth, sexuality, nutrition, exercise, and substance abuse receive attention. Social development depends on consideration of advice given by peers and adults. Neuroscience insights are reported on information processing, attention and distraction. Detection of cheating, cyber abuse, and parental concerns are considered. Career exploration issues are discussed. Visual intelligence, creative thinking, and Internet learning are presented with ways to help students gauge risks, manage stress, and acquire resilience. Peers become the most prominent influence on social development during adolescence, and they recognize the Internet as their greatest resource for locating information. Teachers want to know how to unite these powerful sources of learning, peers and the Internet, to help adolescents acquire teamwork skills employers will expect of them. This goal is achieved by implementing Collaboration Integration Theory. Ten Cooperative Learning Exercises and Roles (CLEAR) at the end of chapters allow each student to choose one role per chapter. Insights gained from these roles are shared with teammates before work is submitted to the teacher. This approach enables students to select assignments, expands group learning, and makes everyone accountable for instruction. The adult teacher role becomes more creative as they design exercises and roles that differentiate team learning. Using Zoom or other platforms a teacher can observe or record cooperative team sharing. Involvement with CLEAR can enable prospective teachers to apply this system to empower their secondary students.
