Betrayed. Reborn. Hunted. If you were given a second chance, would you take it? The immortal Nevinon has hungered for the sweet mercy of death for more than a century. He has lost everything: his home reduced to ruins, his family sunken in forgotten graves, and his closest friend, King Alanor Kova, dead in his arms. When a ritual designed to end his suffering goes wrong, Nevinon accidentally manages the impossible—reincarnating King Alanor and his knights. Now, Nevinon and his friends must abandon their homeland to escape the witch hunters who have conquered their kingdom. They must find Safehold, a mythical sanctuary for those with magic, before the hunters find them first. However, the hunters have gained a new ally. Something else has followed the knights through the Veil between worlds. Something ancient, evil, and determined to devour the source of all magic itself. Through it all, questions linger in Nevinon’s mind. Because the blessings of magic never come free. His family has been returned to him, but for how long? And in exchange, what will he be forced to pay?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Early Judaism is the first reference work devoted exclusively to Second Temple Judaism (fourth century b.c.e. through second century c.e.). The first section of this substantive and incredible work contains thirteen major essays that attempt to synthesize major aspects of Judaism in the period between Alexander and Hadrian. The second — and significantly longer — section offers 520 entries arranged alphabetically. Many of these entries have cross-references and all have select bibliographies. Equal attention is given to literary and nonliterary (i.e. archaeological and epigraphic) evidence and New Testament writings are included as evidence for Judaism in the first century c.e. Several entries also give pertinent information on the Hebrew Bible. The Dictionary of Early Judaism is intended to not only meet the needs of scholars and students — at which it succeeds admirably — but also to provide accessible information for the general reader. It is ecumenical and international in character, bringing together nearly 270 authors from as many as twenty countries and including Jews, Christians, and scholars of no religious affiliation.

Book excerpt: This volume contains fourteen papers that were presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics/La Société Canadienne d’Histoire et de Philosophie des Mathématiques, held at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. In addition to showcasing rigorously reviewed modern scholarship on an interesting variety of topics in the history and philosophy of mathematics, this meeting also honored the life and work of the logician and philosopher of mathematics Aldo Antonelli (1962-2015). The first four papers in this book are part of that remembrance and have a philosophical focus. Included in these are a discussion of Bolzano’s objections to Kant’s philosophy of mathematics and an examination of the influence of rhetorical and poetic aesthetics on the development of symbols in the 16th and 17th Centuries. The remaining papers deal with the history of mathematics and cover such subjects as Early schemes for polar ordinates in the work of L’Hôpital, based on lessons given to him by Bernoulli A method devised by Euler for determining if a number is a sum of two squares Playfair’s Axiom and what it reveals about the history of 19th-Century mathematics education The modern library classification system for mathematical subjects An exploration of various examples of sundials throughout Paris Written by leading scholars in the field, these papers are accessible to not only mathematicians and students of the history and philosophy of mathematics, but also anyone with a general interest in mathematics.

Book excerpt: Their coming had not been written in the stars, and no augury had foretold the terror they would bring. The first sign was the golden lights of the beacons, a clear message from every southern isle that a calamity had befallen them. Daish Kheda, warlord, reader of portents, giver of laws, healer and protector of all his many-islanded realm encompasses, must act quickly and decisively to avert disaster. But the people of the Aldabreshin Archipelago not only fear magic, they've abjured it. So what defense can Kheda offer against the threat of a dark magic that threatens to overrun every island of his domain? A new tale from the writer who has already gathered many fans with the five volumes of her Tales of Einarinn, Southern Fire is an engrossing epic of magic, intrigue, culture, and politics, in a fantasy setting as colorful as the south seas, as bracing as the ocean wind, and as alluring as the hint of spices in the air of an exotic port.
