Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting, hiring, and retaining an excellent and diverse faculty is a top priority for colleges and universities nationwide. Yet faculty serving on search committees (or hiring committees) receive little or no education about the search process. Relying on both research and experience presenting hiring workshops to search committee members, the authors of this guidebook provide advice and recommendations for conducting an effective faculty search. The book includes practical suggestions for managing all stages of a faculty search as well as recommendations for ensuring that search committee members recruit women and members of underrepresented groups into their applicant pools and consciously avoid the influence of bias and assumptions in their evaluation of job candidates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate Students at Work highlights the expertise and experiences of graduate students to demonstrate what graduate study entails, what it makes possible, and what it constrains in the context of corporatizing higher education. This collection of full-length research articles and short personal essays illustrates graduate students’ experiences, organizing tactics, and strategies for staying in or moving out of the academy. Speaking from personal experience as well as reporting research findings, the contributors of Graduate Students at Work illustrate the significant expertise that graduate students are asked to enact in their time-intensive jobs as teachers, researchers, and administrators, even as they are kept in poverty wages for the decade or so it takes to move through a master’s and doctoral program into the promised land of a tenure-track job. While these students are the leaders of the academic labor movement, they have yet to receive as much attention as adjunct instructors and other laborers in the university system. Though they experience harassment, discrimination, and exploitation, graduate students rarely have access to labor protections because they are often misclassified as students, not employees—a key rhetorical strategy universities use to fight graduate student organizing. These essays and articles also draw insightful connections between the labor conditions of graduate student workers and other workers navigating poverty wages, labor migration, limited benefits, and harassment and discrimination around lines of race, gender, ability, and citizenship—the most important connection perhaps being the possibility for organization and unionization to fight for better working conditions for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading text by a prominent scholar, Constitutional Law is known for its concise, comprehensive, and student-friendly presentation. Professor Chemerinsky's frame of reference coupled with rich background information make the law more readily understood. Influenced by 40+ years of teaching, Constitutional Law is dedicated to students who have consistently expressed a preference for straightforward and accessible content. A flexible organization accommodates a variety of course structures; no chapter assumes that students have read preceding material. A complete Teacher’s Manual and Annual Case Supplement round out this acclaimed text. New to the Seventh Edition: Constitutional law has dramatically changed in the last few years. Changes in the law have required revisions throughout, creating a significantly different book than its predecessors. Since the sixth edition the Supreme Court has Overruled of Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Expanded Second Amendment rights in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen Effectively eliminated affirmative action in Students for Fair Admission v. University of North Carolina and Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard University Changed the law concerning the religion clauses of the First Amendment in cases such as Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, Carson v. Makin, and Fulton v. City of Philadelphia In addition to the revisions necessitated by these updates to the law, the book has been carefully and thoroughly edited. A new design has been adopted to make navigating notes and cases more straightforward. The overall approach of the book remains the same providing professors and students with: Focus on three types of material: major cases, heavily edited secondary cases, and essays Essays that provide context with historical background, development of the law in areas cases are not directly presented, and summaries of scholarly debates Straightforward, accessible prose Flexible organization Cases and materials edited to be as ideologically neutral as possible
