Book Synopsis What the Best College Teachers Do by : Ken Bain
Download or read book What the Best College Teachers Do written by Ken Bain and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a great teacher great? Who are the professors students remember long after graduation? This book, the conclusion of a fifteen-year study of nearly one hundred college teachers in a wide variety of fields and universities, offers valuable answers for all educators. The short answer is—it’s not what teachers do, it’s what they understand. Lesson plans and lecture notes matter less than the special way teachers comprehend the subject and value human learning. Whether historians or physicists, in El Paso or St. Paul, the best teachers know their subjects inside and out—but they also know how to engage and challenge students and to provoke impassioned responses. Most of all, they believe two things fervently: that teaching matters and that students can learn. In stories both humorous and touching, Ken Bain describes examples of ingenuity and compassion, of students’ discoveries of new ideas and the depth of their own potential. What the Best College Teachers Do is a treasure trove of insight and inspiration for first-year teachers and seasoned educators.

Book Synopsis How Writing Faculty Write by : Christine E. Tulley
Download or read book How Writing Faculty Write written by Christine E. Tulley and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Writing Faculty Write, Christine Tulley examines the composing processes of fifteen faculty leaders in the field of rhetoric and writing, revealing through in-depth interviews how each scholar develops ideas, conducts research, drafts and revises a manuscript, and pursues publication. The book shows how productive writing faculty draw on their disciplinary knowledge to adopt attitudes and strategies that not only increase their chances of successful publication but also cultivate writing habits that sustain them over the course of their academic careers. The diverse interviews present opportunities for students and teachers to extrapolate from the personal experience of established scholars to their own writing and professional lives. Tulley illuminates a long-unstudied corner of the discipline: the writing habits of theorists, researchers, and teachers of writing. Her interviewees speak candidly about overcoming difficulties in their writing processes on a daily basis, using strategies for getting started and restarted, avoiding writer’s block, finding and using small moments of time, and connecting their writing processes to their teaching. How Writing Faculty Write will be of significant interest to students and scholars across the spectrum—graduate students entering the discipline, new faculty and novice scholars thinking about their writing lives, mid-level and senior faculty curious about how scholars research and write, historians of rhetoric and composition, and metadisciplinary scholars.

Book Synopsis The Development of University Teaching Over Time by : Tom O'Donoghue
Download or read book The Development of University Teaching Over Time written by Tom O'Donoghue and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining two centuries of university education, this book charts the development of pedagogical approaches since the year 1800 and how they have transformed higher education. While institutions for promoting advanced learning in various forms have existed in Asia, Africa, and the Arab world for centuries, the beginning of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of the modern model of a university with which we are familiar today. This book argues that, in the time since, seven broad teaching approaches were developed across the world which continue to be used today: the disputation, the lecture, the tutorial, the research seminar, workplace teaching, teaching through material making, and role-play. O’Donoghue demonstrates how each has been reconfigured and developed over time in response to the changing nature of higher education, as well as society more generally. This expansive book will be of great interest to historians of education, scholars of education more generally, and teacher practitioners interested in the pedagogical models that shape modern academia.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of lecturers’ performance using a novel hierarchical multi-criteria model based on an interval complex Neutrosophic set by : Anh Duc Do
Download or read book Evaluation of lecturers’ performance using a novel hierarchical multi-criteria model based on an interval complex Neutrosophic set written by Anh Duc Do and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance assessment of teaching competency plays an important role in educational activities. Previous assessments of lecturers’ performance have failed to distinguish between potential capacity and their teaching effectiveness. To solve this problem, the integrated approach of quantitative assessment and multi-criteria decision-making models has become one of the main trends for assessing the performance of lecturers in multiple dimensions: self, peer-,manager- and student-based evaluation. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical approach, developed by the Technique for Order preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution method in an interval-valued complex neutrosophic set environment, to more accurately and comprehensively understand the evaluation process and fit it into a systematic framework. An application is given to illustrate a practical solution in lecturer’s evaluation. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing with other methods.

Book excerpt: This collection of nine Fulbright educators’ narrative accounts examines how these scholars navigated their teaching responsibilities with students, time with fellow colleagues, and cultural expectations in China, ranging from experience in teaching arts and government to questions of religion, emotional literacy, and urban infrastructure. With these contributions, authors analyze their own expectations against their actual experiences in order to offer insights for scholars and students of study abroad programming. As a roadmap for negotiating China’s higher education network and for taking advantage of any cross-cultural educational environment, this book highlights the type of fruitful educational programming that can come from cultural, historical, economic, and political difference.
