After the invasion of South Korea by North Korea on 25 June 1950, the Republic of Korea (R.O.K.) Army lay shattered and dispersed across South Korea. Embedded Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) advisers salvaged remnants of the R.O.K. Army from total defeat and from 1950-1953 KMAG worked diligently to recruit, train, and equip a twenty-division army comprising 576,000 personnel capable of modern combined arms warfare. South Korea served as the United States' first large scale advisory mission and may provide lessons learned for future Security Force Assistance efforts. Fifty years after the Korean War, America finds itself in another large-scale Security Force Assistance mission in Iraq. The insights gained from comparing KMAG and the Iraq advisory mission may provide the current force a better appreciation of the intricacies involved with advising foreign forces in the future.

He holds the Silver Star, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart.Mr. Hermes, also a World War II veteran, is a graduate of Boston University, where he received an M.A. degree in 1942, and is currently completing requirements for a Ph.D. degree in history at Georgetown University. Book excerpt: The Will to Win focuses on the substantial role of US military advisors to the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) from 1946 until 1953 in one of America’s early attempts at nation building. Gibby describes ROKA’s structure, mission, challenges, and successes, thereby linking the South Korean army and their US advisors to the traditional narrative of this “forgotten war.” The work also demonstrates the difficulties inherent in national reconstruction, focusing on barriers in culture and society, and the effects of rapid decolonization combined with intense nationalism and the appeal of communism to East Asia following the destruction of the Japanese empire. Key conclusions include the importance of individual advisors, the significance of the prewar advisory effort, and the depth of the impact these men had on individual Korean units and in a few cases on the entire South Korean army. The success or failure of South Korean government in the decade following the end of World War II hinged on the loyalty, strength, and fighting capability of its army, which in turn relied on its American advisors. Gibby argues that without a proficient ROKA, the 1953 armistice, still in effect today, would not have been possible. Lynn Roberts initiated the Korean Military Advisor Group. This element had been approved by both the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as President Truman, and served as the primary advisors, mentors, and trainers for the South Korean Army. Initially consisting of five hundred men, this element would soon be tested as tensions, and eventually war, began with North Korea. US advisors that were assigned to the Korean Military Advisor Group contended with a multitude of issues that prohibited the completion of their assigned tasks. The solutions that they adapted enabled them to minimize many of the cultural and societal differences during their training, created a system that could be maintained by the Koran Military upon their departure, and created a training program that could be implemented during ongoing hostilities with North Korea. For the past eleven years United States military forces have conducted similar training in Iraq and Afghanistan. How the Korean Military Advisor Group conducted their training, equipping, and eventual transition of ongoing alliance operations during the Korean War to indigenous Korean military forces has direct applicability to current military operations in Afghanistan.
