Book Synopsis United States Military Forces and Installations in Europe by : Simon Duke
Download or read book United States Military Forces and Installations in Europe written by Simon Duke and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people who live in Europe, the presence of substantial US military forces is a matter of concern and debate, which has tended so far to centre around a few highly-visible bases, such as the cruise missile locations. Apart from these few bases, relatively little is known about the size and extent of the US military presence in Europe. This book aims to fill that gap by providing the raw data on what is where. The study also highlights the historical details behind the acquisition of bases in individual countries, and summarizes and analyses all of the basing agreements between the US and its host nations which are available to the public. The book a timely contribution to the debate: as discussions begin for possible post-INF cuts in superpower force levels in Europe, there is an urgent need for accurate and unbiased information on US forces in Western Europe and on the massive infrastructure that supports those forces.
Book Synopsis The Peacetime Use of Foreign Military Installations under Modern International Law by : John Woodliffe
Download or read book The Peacetime Use of Foreign Military Installations under Modern International Law written by John Woodliffe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stationing of foreign armed forces abroad in peacetime has been a constant and distinctive feature of the post-1945 bipolar world. This book is the first systematic study of the subject to look beyond the areas of criminal and civil jurisdiction to broader issues of international law arising out of the establishment and use of foreign military installations in time of peace. Implementation of basing agreements between states sending and states hosting foreign armed forces has resulted in a large body of state practice that includes such major international incidents as the U.S. air raid on Libya in 1986 and the U.S. intervention in Panama in 1989. This book assesses the future of foreign military installations against the background of the end of the Cold War, the unification of Germany, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, and the emerging European security order.

Book Synopsis The Greek-Turkish Relationship and NATO by : Dr Fotios Moustakis
Download or read book The Greek-Turkish Relationship and NATO written by Dr Fotios Moustakis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication shows that the Eastern Mediterranean, having been transformed from a region of secondary importance during the Cold War to one of greater importance for the western interests in the post-Cold War era, is in a state of flux. Despite sporadic periods of rapprochement, tensions between Greece and Turkey still exist. Therefore, one must question the grounds behind the lack of normal relations that exist between these two NATO members and its effects on the NATO organisation as a whole. Hence, this volume has two purposes first, to examine Greek and Turkish foreign, security and defence policies during and after the post-Cold War period and second, to investigate why these policies have been formulated.

Book Synopsis Superpower Rivalry in the Indian Ocean by : Selig S. Harrison

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Note for Jacket--see Marketing File-so/10/26]The vast, politically turbulent region encompassing the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, forty-two littoral states, and one third of the world's population is one of the most potentially explosive theaters of superpower rivalry. In this study, three American and three Indian authors, reflecting different perspectives and areas of expertise, examine the principal factors that have led to the escalation of superpower tensions in the region: the war in Afghanistan, and its spillover into the Afghanistan-Pakistani borderlands; the Indo-Pakistani nuclear arms race; ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka; the Iran-Iraq war; Islamic fundamentalism; and the rapidly growing military presence of the superpowers in the area. Considering how India's emergence as a military power is influencing superpower and indigenous tensions in the region, the contributors compare Indian, American, and Soviet interests, and offer solutions for current Indian-American disagreements.

Book Synopsis The Mediterranean Basin by : Glenda G. Rosenthal
Download or read book The Mediterranean Basin written by Glenda G. Rosenthal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Basin: Its Political Economy and Changing International Relations examines the political economy and changing international relations of the Mediterranean Basin. Emphasis is on the increasing “Europeanization of most Mediterranean countries, whereby they are moving more and more into the economic, political, and strategic orbit of Western Europe. This text is divided into three parts; the first of which discusses the effects of the southern enlargement of the European Community on the Mediterranean Basin, with particular reference to Turkey, Morocco, and Tunisia. The second part explores some key issues in the political economy of the area and shows how most Mediterranean countries are becoming increasingly locked into the Western European political economy in three areas: agriculture, labor market, and energy source (oil and gas). The third part is concerned with the involvement of the superpowers in the Mediterranean, considering the developments in the East-West naval competition in the region and how they relate to the countries of the area. The disputes between Greece and Turkey in relation to the United States are also highlighted. Each of these three parts is made up of two or three case studies that illustrate the three different kinds of Europeanization process in the Mediterranean Basin. This book will be of interest to political economists, political scientists, and policymakers in the field of international relations.
