Book excerpt: The tale of the Bechtel family dynasty is a classic American business story. It begins with Warren A. 'Dad' Bechtel, who led a consortium that constructed the Hoover Dam. From that auspicious start, the family and its eponymous company would go on to 'build the world,' from the construction of airports in Hong Kong and Doha, to pipelines and tunnels in Alaska and Europe, to mining and energy operations around the globe. Today Bechtel is one of the largest privately held corporations in the world, enriched and empowered by a long history of government contracts and the privatization of public works, made possible by an unprecedented revolving door between its San Francisco headquarters and Washingto
Book Synopsis Behind the War on Terror by : Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed
Download or read book Behind the War on Terror written by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed and published by CLAIRVIEW BOOKS. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using official sources, Ahmed investigates U.S. and British claims about Iraq's WMD programs and in the process reveals the hidden motives behind the 2003 invasion and the grand strategy of which it is a part. He shows that the true goals of U.S.-British policy in the Middle East are camouflaged by spin, P.R. declarations and seemingly noble words. The reality can only be comprehended through knowledge of the history of Western intervention in the region. Ahmed demonstrates that such intervention has been dictated ruthlessly by economic and political interests, with little regard for human rights. He traces events of the past decades, beginning with the West's support for the highly repressive Shah of Iran, his subsequent usurpation by the Ayatollah's Islamist regime and the West's resultant backing of Saddam Hussein.

Book excerpt: An indispensable set of interviews on foreign and domestic issues with the bestselling author of Hegemony or Survival, "America's most useful citizen." (The Boston Globe) In this new collection of conversations, conducted in 2006 and 2007, Noam Chomsky explores the most immediate and urgent concerns: Iran's challenge to the United States, the deterioration of the Israel-Palestine conflict, the ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, the rise of China, and the growing power of the left in Latin America, as well as the Democratic victory in the 2006 U.S. midterm elections and the upcoming presidential race. As always, Chomsky presents his ideas vividly and accessibly, with uncompromising principle and clarifying insight. The latest volume from a long-established, trusted partnership, What We Say Goes shows once again that no interlocutor engages with Chomsky more effectively than David Barsamian. These interviews will inspire a new generation of readers, as well as longtime Chomsky fans eager for his latest thinking on the many crises we now confront, both at home and abroad. They confirm that Chomsky is an unparalleled resource for anyone seeking to understand our world today.

Book Synopsis Global Discontents by : Noam Chomsky
Download or read book Global Discontents written by Noam Chomsky and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling set of interviews, the intellectual discusses contemporary threats to democracy, from economic inequality to the Trump presidency. In wide-ranging discussions with David Barsamian, his longtime interlocutor, Noam Chomsky asks us to consider “the world we are leaving to our grandchildren”: one imperiled by climate change and the growing potential for nuclear war. If the current system is incapable of dealing with these threats, he argues, it’s up to us to radically change it. The twelve interviews in Global Discontents examine the recent global developments: the rise of ISIS, the reach of state surveillance, growing anger over economic inequality, conflicts in the Middle East, and the presidency of Donald Trump. In personal reflections on his Philadelphia childhood, Chomsky also describes his own intellectual journey and the development of his uncompromising stance as America’s premier dissident intellectual. “Well-informed salvos to please or enrage, depending on one’s politics.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis America Betrayed – Why 9/11 Occurred by : Richard Harman
Download or read book America Betrayed – Why 9/11 Occurred written by Richard Harman and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is anti-war, which gives it immense scope. Its front cover shows New York City's Twin Towers less than a month before they disappeared rapidly during 9/11. None of the Bush-Cheney administration's explanations were true, but there were serious Nazi overtones. One of the book's themes is the warlike capture of already occupied land from its current owners. These captures have been substantially similar, involving: massacre, murder and rape; the arson, demolition or confiscation of land and buildings; and deception, hypocrisy and Machiavellian lies. Such captures could be classified as Nazism -- German from 1933 to 1945, but Hebrew over 3000 years ago and Zionist since 1947 against the Palestinians. Terrorism is also discussed, from American to Islamic which, in particular, is Arabs' response to their loss of dignity because of Israeli actions funded by America. That is why the earliest global Islamic terrorism was the hijacking and destruction of American passenger aircraft. Deliberate American provocation generated continuous wars under the Republican, Reagan and Bush administrations, who profited from their immense investments in the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction. This was the fruition of retiring President Eisenhower's worst fear, the growth of a Military-Industrial complex, which became a Political-Military-Industrial-Media complex. The media aspect includes Zionist ownership of most newspapers. President George W Bush was wrong when he called Iraq, Iran and North Korea an axis of evil, because the leaders of those countries had never met together, even for a coffee. Instead, the real axis of evil was, and is, that of America and Israel, for reasons described in this book.
Book Synopsis The Constitution After Scott by : Adam Tomkins
Download or read book The Constitution After Scott written by Adam Tomkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough and authoritative account of the constitutional implications of the Scott report. It is the only book-length treatment of this pivotal Report. The Scott report was established by John Major in 1992 to look into British government policy during the 1980s with regard to trade (including the arms trade) with Iraq and to establish whether the Government had lied to Parliament about its policy. Scott also investigated a number of high-profile and controversial criminal prosecutions which the government brought against several companies that were accused of illegally exporting "defence equipment" to Iraq. All of these cases failed. This book does more than merely relate the Scott story. It offers a full analysis of what the report means for the future of constitutional government, and constitutional reform, in Britain. Issues of lying to Parliament and ministerial responsibility; of the regulation and control of the civil service; and of open government and freedom of information are all reappraised in the light of Scott's discoveries. Central questions of secret intelligence and troublesome "public interest immunity certificates" are also considered. Unusually for a political scandal, Scott was not an exclusively national affair affecting only one country. There was a little-known equivalent to the Scott inquiry in the USA, and the lessons of the US experience are also discussed here - for the first time in Britain.

Book Synopsis The Economic Consequences of the Gulf War by : Kamran Mofid
Download or read book The Economic Consequences of the Gulf War written by Kamran Mofid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-10-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iran-Iraq War were one of the longest and most devastating uninterrupted wars amongst modern nation states. It produced neither victor nor vanquished and left the regimes in both countries basically intact. However, it is clear that the domestic, regional and international repercussions of the war mean that 'going back' is not an option. Iraq owes too much to regain the lead it formerly held in economic performance and development levels. What then does reconstruction mean? In this book, Kamran Mofid counteracts the scant analysis to date of the economic consequences of the Gulf War by analysing its impact on both economies in terms of oil production, exports, foreign exchange earnings, non-defence foreign trade and agricultural performance. In the final section, Mofid brings together the component parts of the economic cost of the war to assign a dollar value to the devastation.
