This book was released on 1988-10-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together leading academic experts from the U.S. and Canada to explore the crucial economic relationship between their two countries--each of whom is the other's largest trading partner. The essays, all specially written for this study, provide an integrated, balanced examination of the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the relationship and discuss reasons for the increasing difficulties experienced in the past few years. An indispensable supplement for courses in international business and regional economics, the study will also provide economists, political scientists, and environmentalists with important new insights into this most critical relationship. Following an overview of the economic structure of the two nations, the contributors focus upon three general areas of Canadian-American economic relations. The section on natural resources and related issues presents an up-to-date view of energy and environmental considerations and explores shared problems of agricultural competitiveness. Turning to a discussion of trade issues, the contributors analyze the effects of the October 1987 accord, address the impact of the U.S. balance of payments position on Canadian economics, and examine ways in which each country can expand its international trade. Finally, a group of essays on taxes, financial markets, and bilateral investment offers an in-depth treatment of issues such as U.S. direct investment in Canadian manufacturing, the development of an integrated North American venture capital market, and investment patters. Numerous tables and figures amplify the discussions.

Book excerpt: This study examines from an American perspective the impact of the free trade agreement (FTA) on the evolution of the Canada-United States economic relationship. It puts into historical context the special trading relationship between Canada and the United States which prevailed over the early postwar period. It examines how FTA rules and dispute settlement procedures create an effective basis for managing bilateral economic relationships in the context of more decentralized policy processes. It also explores the potential impact on the bilateral trading regime of the changing nature of international competition, the adjustments taking place in the structure of the Canadian and American economies, and the challenges posed by continuing technological change.

Book Synopsis Canada's Unity Crisis by : Earl H. Fry
Download or read book Canada's Unity Crisis written by Earl H. Fry and published by New York : Twentieth Century Fund Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada celebrated a bittersweet 125th anniversary as a nation in 1992, bittersweet because many Canadians fear that their country may soon fall apart. As Quebec decides its own fate of voting for sovereign independence, the rest of Canada could follow suit and splinter as did the former Soviet Union. The likelihood of that actually happening is slim, however, there are major referendums on the coming ballot in Canada that could possibly alter not only the Canadian Constitution but the style and power of the government as well. Canada's own security is complex and will certainly be drawn-out, however, the United States could be of some assistance. For the foreseeable future, the most important connection between Canada and the United States are their economic ties and the bilateral relationship for both the U.S. corporate and labor sectors. With over three million jobs tied directly to trade, investment, and tourism linkages with Canada, the United States should be very concerned about what is transpiring north of the border. For far too long the American relationship with Canada has been overlooked and understudied. In this essay Earl H. Fry reports on the Canadian confederation and how it may now be at risk, and how the United States' own economic well-being may suffer as a result of the serious problems currently confronting Canada.

Book Synopsis Trade and Investment Relations Among the United States, Canada, and Japan by : Robert Mitchell Stern
Download or read book Trade and Investment Relations Among the United States, Canada, and Japan written by Robert Mitchell Stern and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-11-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic futures of the United States, Canada, and Japan are tightly linked by the extremely powerful trade network these nations share. Yet because of trade and domestic policies aimed at preserving economic and, some argue, cultural integrity, there has at times been considerable friction among the three nations. Much of the recent trade animus of the U.S. has been aimed Japan, the country with the largest trade surplus with the United States. Canada, the largest trade partner of the U.S., maintains fiscal policies which resemble those of Japan, but has not been the focus of similar concern. Since the actions of each nation reverberate throughout the network, a full and accurate understanding of these complex relations will be essential if ongoing trade negotiations, policymaking, and international relations are to be constructive. The papers in this volume were developed from a conference that addressed the need to discover which structural determinants and policies shape the close economic ties among these nations. Leading experts on trade and macroeconomics from all three countries examine disproportionate saving rates, exchange rate volatility, varying industrial policies and levels of financial innovation, the effects of present tax policies and proposed reforms, and the dynamism of major Pacific nations and the leadership role Japan may play in U.S. relations with that region. Several important conclusions are reached by the contributors. They assert that Japan's trade barriers are relatively low overall and are comparable to those maintained by the United States and Canada, and that divergent fiscal policies have been the major source of macroeconomic imbalances between the United States and other major countries in the 1980s. They also conclude that current trade imbalances may persist for some time. The analyses offered here are likely to prove influential in future policymaking and will be of interest to a wide audience, including academic economists, government officials, and students of theoretical and policy issues of international trade, investment, and finance.
Book Synopsis Brazil and Canada by : Rosana Barbosa
Download or read book Brazil and Canada written by Rosana Barbosa and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of the relationship between Brazil and Canada, or what comprises Canada today, with the objective of uncovering a neglected history. This book covers from the first known exchange of migrants between the two countries in 1828 to 1979 when a political openness in the Brazilian military dictatorship gave rise to a new chapter in the two countries’ relationship. As the first synthetic treatment of this relationship, this book not only aims to build on the limited historiography that exists, but also to open up new interpretive channels that can be further explored in the future. Recommended for scholars of Latin American studies, history, and international relations.
