Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Devaki Jain opens the doors of the United Nations and shows how it has changed the female half of the world -- and vice versa. Women, Development, and the UN is a book that every global citizen, government leader, journalist, academic, and self-respecting woman should read." -- Gloria Steinem "Devaki Jain's book nurtures your optimism in this terrible war-torn decade by describing how women succeeded in empowering both themselves and the United Nations to work toward a global leadership inspired by human dignity." -- Fatema Mernissi In Women, Development, and the UN, internationally noted development economist and activist Devaki Jain traces the ways in which women have enriched the work of the United Nations from the time of its founding in 1945. Synthesizing insights from the extensive literature on women and development and from her own broad experience, Jain reviews the evolution of the UN's programs aimed at benefiting the women of developing nations and the impact of women's ideas about rights, equality, and social justice on UN thinking and practice regarding development. Jain presents this history from the perspective of the southern hemisphere, which recognizes that development issues often look different when viewed from the standpoint of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The book highlights the contributions of the four global women's conferences in Mexico City, Copenhagen, Nairobi, and Beijing in raising awareness, building confidence, spreading ideas, and creating alliances. The history that Jain chronicles reveals both the achievements of committed networks of women in partnership with the UN and the urgent work remaining to bring equality and justice to the world and its women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking volume, dedicated to the International Women's Decade, reflects the decade's themes of equality, peace, and development. Experts assess the progress that has been made, lament the failure of nations to take more steps to improve women's status, and analyze the divisive issues that have been at the forefront of concern and have limited the achievements of the two United Nations conferences on women. With its broad perspective of women's involvement in political systems and processes in the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, the United States, and Japan, this highly insightful book confirms the critical importance of culture in determining female political status and behavior. The chapters reflect the diversity that results from the different levels of general socioeconomic and political development of the nations in which the world's feminists live, and the importance of culture, economic factors, and ideologies in determining the variety of visions women have about the ultimate purposes of their lives and the social change being sought.

Auth also offers background information on the three previous UN Women's Conferences, outlines the work that has been accomplished since the 1995 conference, and the plans for implementing the Beijing Platform for Action at the local level. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical history of influential women in the United Nations and seeks to inspire empowerment with role models from bygone eras. The women whose voices this book presents helped shape UN conventions, declarations, and policies with relevance to the international human rights of women throughout the world today. From the founding of the UN up until the Latin American feminist movements that pushed for gender equality in the UN Charter, and the Security Council Resolutions on the role of women in peace and conflict, the volume reflects on how women delegates from different parts of the world have negotiated and disagreed on human rights issues related to gender within the UN throughout time. In doing so it sheds new light on how these hidden historical narratives enrich theoretical studies in international relations and global agency today. In view of contemporary feminist and postmodern critiques of the origin of human rights, uncovering women’s history of the United Nations from both Southern and Western perspectives allows us to consider questions of feminism and agency in international relations afresh. With contributions from leading scholars and practitioners of law, diplomacy, history, and development studies, and brought together by a theoretical commentary by the Editors, Women and the UN will appeal to anyone whose research covers human rights, gender equality, international development, or the history of civil society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has placed the advancement of women at the forefront of its agenda. The UN Charter, for instance, is the first international document to recognize the equal rights of men and women. Yet how beneficial have UN programs been for women in the developing world? How must the UN change to make future programs more effective? And most importantly, what does the experience of women working within the UN system tell us about the UN's commitment to gender equity? Women and the United Nations: Reflections and New Horizons addresses these and other questions. Gathered here are papers and statements presented at a seminar organized by the UNIDO Forum of Women Professionals and held in Vienna in May 1995. The seminar marked the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and served as a preparatory activity for the Fourth World Conference on Women, to be held in Beijing in September 1995. The purpose of the seminar was to examine gender issues as they affect international development and especially to evaluate the UN's progress as a role model in the equitable treatment of women. The papers and statements, by well-known scholars and policy makers, address such issues as the gender implications of the UN's agenda for equality, development, and peace; women's role in the field operations and in technological advances, especially information technology; the dangers of technological change for women's health and the environment; improving women's status in the UN system; and increasing women's participation in economic and political decision making. In addition to a foreword by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, this book also includesthe full text of the seminar's recommendations for action to advance the status of women both within and outside the UN system. An appendix contains three resolutions drafted in March and April 1995 by the Commission on the Status of Women concerning trafficking in women and girls, the taking of women and children as hostages, and the improvement of women's status in the UN secretariat. This book emphasizes the need for women to take a central role in the design and implementation of policies and programs to promote sustainable development. Scholars, activists, and policy makers will value Women and the United Nations as a reference tool, and will find its analyses and prescriptions for action provocative and stimulating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The documents adopted by the United Nations World Conference on Women during the Decade for Women (1975-1985) set forth a policy agenda for national and local governments, international institutions, and women's groups worldwide. The dialogue among women at the nongovernmental forums held in tandem with these conferences served to identify, refine, and reassess the issues addressed in the official documents. In this volume, Dr. Fraser has condensed the four major documents of the Decade, retaining much of the original language, and describes the context in which agendas for policies, programs, and research were developed. The opening chapters offer a historical perspective on the establishment of International Women's Year, the Decade for Women, and the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Throughout the book the author analyzes the influence of Third World women on the formulation of the agenda and discusses the interaction between the official and NGO conferences. She concludes by assessing the results in policy and programmatic terms and by exploring their implications for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passed in 2000, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and subsequent seven Resolutions make up the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. This agenda is a significant international normative and policy framework addressing the gender-specific impacts of conflict on women and girls, including protection against sexual and gender-based violence, promotion of women's participation in peace and security processes, and support for women's roles as peace builders in the prevention of conflict and rebuilding of societies after conflict. Implementation within and across states and international organizations - and within peace and security operations - has been slow despite significant transnational advocacy in support of the WPS agenda. The Oxford Handbook of Women, Peace, and Security brings together scholars, advocates, and policymakers to provide an overview of what we know concerning what works to promote women's participation in peace and security, what works to protect women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence and other human rights violations, and what works to prevent conflict drawing on women's experiences and knowledge of building peace from local to global levels. Just as importantly, it addresses the gaps in knowledge on and the future direction of scholarship on WPS. The handbook particularly aims to build on the findings from the 2015 Global Study of Resolution 1325, commissioned by the UN-Secretary General. Over the course of six sections, the handbook addresses the concepts and early history behind WPS; the theory and practice of WPS; international institutions involved with the WPS agenda; the implementation of WPS in conflict prevention, peace operations, peace building, arms control, human-rights protection, and protection of civilians; connections between WPS and other UN resolutions and agendas; and the ongoing and future challenges of WPS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have women used global institutions and the networking possible through them to assure women's emergence on the world stage? How successful have women been at the United Nations and at international conferences over the years in their pressures for equality and for a full partnership with men? To what extent have women gained a foothold in the political arena internationally, and have they been able to exert their influence and to improve their situation? Expert participants and scholars give varying perspectives and insights about the history of women's worldwide efforts through governmental and nongovernmental organizations. They trace the role of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. They analyze the politics of the three world women's conferences in the 1970s and the 1980s, the evolution of institutions set up as catalysts to resolve key issues in developing countries, and the changing conditions for women in the UN Secretariat and specialized agencies. These unusual appraisals and a lengthy bibliography are for interdisciplinary audiences of women and men around the world—essential background to understanding the 1995 UN conference in Beijing.
