Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unitarianism Untenable: A Letter Addressed to the Unitarians of Chester, Edinburgh and Norwich, Great Britain, and Pittsburgh, America Scripture evidence. Let me beseech you carefully to compare them. I Shall here mention only a few. Matt. Xxii. 43; Psa. Ex. 1. How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. Luke i. 17. Isai. X1. 3. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God; and he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias. Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high way for our God. Matt. Xxi. 16. And the children cried out Ho saunah to the son of David. And Jesus saith unto them, have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise. Psa. Viii. 12. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast ordained strength. Do you think that the lowly Jesus, if a man, or a created being, however high in the scale of existence, would have applied this passage to himself? Matt. Ii. 6. Micah v. 2. Out of thee Shall come forth unto me, that is to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have'been from of old, from everlasting. Zech. Xii. 10. They shall look upon me whom they have pierced. - John xix. 36. Many other passages you will find in the summary. In the Old Testament, our Lord is called Immanuel, the mighty God, Jehovah our righteousness; and attributes are ascribed to him which appertain only to God. I have mentioned by what means I was accustomed to elude this testimony; and I cannot express how much I am surprised at my blindness and presump tion. I read as if it was my office to judge, and to give the message of God its due place, and subordination among the principles which I had previously established. N ow these principles were utterly unknown at the first publication of Christianity. Find every natural or assumed principle, which ojere to abridge its supremacy, or even so much as to share with it in authority and direction, should be instantly discarded. This is now my firm conviction, and had I received it earlier, I never could have adopted Unitarianism as the religion of the Gospel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Gore (1853-1932) was successively bishop of Worcester, Birmingham and Oxford, and a leading figure in the Christian Social Union, founded by Scott Holland in 1889. Although he ackowledged his debt to Maurice, Gore always said that his passion for social justice dated from a tour of the slums of Oxfordshire he was given by the trade union leader Joseph Arch. His socialism was cautious -- he indicated that he would probably prefer to stop somewhere this side of full-fledged socialism, but always added that we have a very long way to go before we get there.
