Book excerpt: Excerpt from National History of the War for the Union, Civil, Military and Naval, Vol. 1 of 3: Founded on Official and Other Authentic Documents The Publishers submit this record of the war for the union with a few Words of acknowledgment to their Subscribers for their support during its progress. Undertaken at an early period of the conflict, when its duration could not be calculated, the work has been steadily prosecuted, chapter by chapter contemporaneously with the rapid march of events. Relying mostly upon original documents which will always retain their, value, the narrative has been proportioned to the importance and length of the struggle; while the Artists have presented in a'series of more than seventy engravings, the most remarkable incidents and most important personages who have figured in the national history during this unprecedented struggle. In attaining this result, the Publishers have had to encounter many mechanical difficulties growing out of the interruptions of labor, and the increased price of materials, consequent upon the war but they have never suffered these embarrassments to interfere with the steady progress of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National History of the War for the Union, Civil, Military and Naval, Vol. 3 of 3: Founded on Official and Other Authentic Documents The question was, now, in what way should the attack upon General Lee's army be made - for an early demonstra tion of some kind was not to be long de layed, the removal of General mcclellan absolutely requiring a Show at least of prompt and vigorous action on the part Of his successor. As General Sumner afterwards said of the military counsels of this period, in the Army of the Poto mac, he was in favor Of crossing the Rappahannock, because I knew that neither our Government nor our people Would be satisfied to have our army re tire from their position, or go into winter quarters, until we knew the force which was on the other side of the river; and the only way in which we could learn that was by going over there and feeling of them. The-bridges over the creeks, on the Acquia Railroad, having been re built, and cars and engines brought down the Potomac, the line was in Operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State of the Union: Being a Complete Documentary History of the Public Affairs of the United States, Foreign and Domestic, for the Year 1854 The past has been an eventful year, and will be hereafter referred to as a marked epoch in the history of the world. While we have been happily preserved from the calamities of war, our domestic prosperity has not been entirely uninterrupted. The crops, in portions of the country, have been nearly cut off. Disease has prevailed to a greater extent than usual, and the sacrifice of human life, through casualties by sea and land, is without parallel. But the pestilence has swept by, and restored salubrity invites the absent to their homes, and the return of business to its ordinary channels. If the earth has rewarded the labor of the husbandman less bountifully than in preceding seasons, it has left him with abundance for domestic wants, and a large surplus for exportation. In the present, therefore, as in the past, we find ample grounds for reverent thankfulness to the God of Grace and Providence, for His protecting care and merciful dealings with us as a people. Although our attention has been arrested by painful interest in passing events, yet our country feels no more than the slight vibrations of the convulsions which have shaken Europe. As individuals, we cannot repress sympathy with human suffering, nor regret for the causes which produce it. As a nation, we are reminded, that whatever interrupts the peace, or checks the prosperity, of any part of Christendom, tends, more or less, to involve our own. The condition of States is not unlike that of individuals. They are mutually dependent upon each other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has for over ten years made it a condition that it would not employ persons who were members of such organizations or retain in its employ those who became members. Its policy in this regard was so well known that it was understood that those who accepted employment were considered to have agreed thereto. 5. The labor union involved in this matter has no membership whatever among this company's employees, but is an organization carrying on a propaganda to induce our employees to become members. 6. The labor union which invoked the interference of the National War Labor Board sought to secure an interpretation of the Boards principles that would in effect become a mandate of the Board in support of its propaganda to secure members from the staff of the company by inducing them to violate the conditions of their employment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History, Greeley and the Union Colony of Colorado The present time appeared to me a favorable One for this work as many of the old landmarks are disappearing, and the data I found were beginning to be difficult to procure. The files of The Tribune were incomplete, nearly the whole of the first year being missing, while The Sun has no files previous to 1885. The deficiency above pointed out, is made good to a certain extent by the care of H. T. West who has collected in a Scrap Book a large number of news paper articles relating to the colony during the first three years. Mr. West has been kind enough to put this in my hands together with other valuable documents, some of which will be printed in full in the appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union, the Constitution, and Slavery The struggle in which this nation is engaged has already reached that stage in its progress when words of counsel may be offered, when principles may be discussed, when, if any man can throw light upon the questions at issue, or say or do aught to assuage the bitterness of feeling, and become the in strument of Peace, he is bound not to keep silent. For almost three years, the fierce passions, the mighty energies, the vast resources of the entire country, North and South, have been called into full play at what terrible cost, it is too soon yet to estimate. We do not suppose that the War 1s yet at an end; but we do believe that Reason is beginning to resume her throne. Men are beginning to ask, when is this awful sac rifice of the young best life of the country to cease What are the ends, for which the War is to be protracted P What are the difficulties, in the way of securing those ends In re Sponding to these inquiries, in the present Article, we shall write with entire frankness and while we utter only our own individual convictions, we shall do it in complete independence of all political parties, and, as far as may be, of all sectional prejudices.
