Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing the theoretical and experimental advances in pion-nucleon interactions over approximately the last twelve years, the authors offer here a timely account of the hadronic interactions of pions and nucleons and of the structure of nucleons. Because of the hadronic SU3 symmetry, the book also treats the structure of baryons in general, and so contains much material external to the specific field of pion-nucleon interactions. Thus the book's subject can be stated as the hadronic structure of baryons as illustrated particularly by pion-nucleon interaction. Following an introductory discussion of isotopic spin, the authors proceed to chapters that treat low energy pion scattering by nucleons and the photoproduction of pions; forward and fixed momentum transfer dispersion relations; analytic properties of scattering amplitudes; formation of nucleon resonances; symmetries and classification of particles and resonances; current algebra, sum rules, and superconvergence relations; scattering at higher energies; pion-nucleon dynamics; pion-nucleon inelastic scattering; and the form factors of the nucleon and the pion. Each chapter is followed by abundant references to the original literature. The level of the writing is suitable for students at the graduate level, and the presentation is even and self-contained. On balance, the authors have prepared a useful consolidation and review of this difficult and changing area of investigation. Originally published in 1973. Book excerpt: The one-pion-exchange and two-pion-exchange parts of the S-matrix for nucleon-nucleon scattering are calculate field-theoretically. The rescattering of virtual pions by nucleons and the pion-pion interaction between virtual pions are taken into account. The S-matrix is then decomposed into the partial-wave amplitudes, and the phase shifts are calculated. Numerical evaluations are carried out for the 310-Mev protonproton scattering, and the results are compared with the phase shifts obtained by analyzing the experimental data. Without contribution of the pion-pion interaction, the results are far from agreement with experiment because of too strong attraction arising from the contributions of the two-pion-exchange part, but the contribution of the pion-pion resonance in the I equals J equals 1 state improves the results considerably by largely cancelling the attraction. Definite discrepancies remain between the theory and the experiments, and some unknown effects must play important roles in determining the nuclear force in the region of the internucleon distance around the Compton wave length of the pion. Book excerpt: One of the most fundamental problems in elementary particle physics is the study of the interaction of the pion meson with nucleons. It is believed that the pion meson plays a fundamental role in the description of nuclear forces and it is important, therefore, to understand the interaction of these particles. The primary method of gaining information on this interaction is through scattering experiments, and this book is concerned primarily with studies of pion-nucleon scattering at high energies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of effective field theory (EFT) is ideally suited to deal with physical systems containing separate energy scales. Applied to low energy hadronic phenomena it provides a framework for systematically describing nuclear systems in a way consistent with quantum chromodynamics, the underlying theory of strong interactions. Because EFT offers the possibility of a unified description of all low energy processes involving nucleons, it has the potential to become the foundation of conventional nuclear physics.Much progress has been made recently in this field: a number of observables in the two-nucleon sector were computed and compared to experiment, issues related to the extension of the EFT program to the three-nucleon sector were clarified, and the convergence of the low energy expansion was critically examined. This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on 'Nuclear Physics with Effective Field Theory II', where these and other developments were discussed.
