Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unified Accounting Methods for Industrials It is to be noted that the forms presented, while selected from those in actual use, are for illustrative purposes, and there is no hard and fast rule preventing their modification or change either in captions, size, or general arrangement to meet any special requirements. It has been deemed best to present the balance Sheet in the first part of the book. This means the giving first of that which would ordinarily be given last; but it is sometimes well to picture a house before building it, and this would seem to be one of those times. The author realizes the impossibility of writing a book of this character without leaving many questions un answered, and that it must necessarily be somewhat specific in its subject matter. It has, however, been written for the benefit of three classes of individuals, the executive, the engineer, and the accountant; but in the main, the present work is one of accounting and as such is submitted to his fellow-workers in the industrial world with but one thought and one wish, and that is, that they may derive as much profit from the application of its principles and precepts as the author has had pleasure in formulating them. In conclusion the author wishes to express his high appreciation of the efficient editorial assistance given by Dr. Carroll W. Doten, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and by the editorial staff of The Ronald Press Company - assistance which has added much to the clear ness and general value of the book.
