Book excerpt: About the Book Running with Unicorns: What I learned from a lifetime of helping my sister with her mental illness proposes that some brains may function in a unique manner. A unicorn is the perfect symbol to depict the strength and power of these individuals. The author wanted to keep the flow of text uncluttered and not get drawn into “normal” thinking and behavior. The world wants to make all individuals part of the herd; trying to fit them into society as we currently know it; trying to “cure them” so that they will be accepted. The question is: should they be cured or should we learn how to help them, acknowledge their special talents, and minimize their fears? In 2016, a site called the “Secret Unicorn Blog” was written by Archie McPhee. He says that, “The unicorn uses its weapons of strength, creativity and audacity to instigate change. The unicorn does not use the opinions and desires of others to decide what it should do, it goes by an inner compass defined by taste, decency, intelligence, and whimsy. Chances are, if you’ve had your world changed by something, that something was created by a unicorn.” About the Author Charlotte Gibson was born in Toronto, Canada in 1945. She currently lives in Waterloo, Ontario with her husband Barry, and their Doberman Bracken. They live near their five children and six grandchildren. Charlotte loves fitness, friends and flower arranging. She has an honors B.A. and an M.A. in Community Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University. With more than 25 years of service in the non-profit world, Charlotte Gibson made it her mission in life to help improve the health and quality of life for people in the province of Ontario. As President and Chief Executive Officer of The Easter Seal Society, Ontario from 1998 to 2005, she was committed to helping children, youth and young adults with physical disabilities live independent and rewarding lives. She moved to Easter Seals from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario where she held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility from 1985 to 1998.

Margot Adler attended ritual gatherings and interviewed a diverse, colorful gallery of people across the United States, people who find inspiration in ancient deities, nature, myth, even science fiction. In this edition, featuring an updated resource guide of newsletters, journals, books, groups, and festivals, Margot Adler takes a fascinating and honest look at the religious experiences, beliefs, and lifestyles of modern America's Pagan groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing a fresh approach to conceptualising and actioning high-quality teaching in higher education, this essential volume fills a gap in current literature by expanding beyond the mere ‘delivery’ of teaching. Instead, it offers an evidence-based discussion of ‘artistry’ and demonstrates how this may be applied successfully within a higher education setting to enable better student learning. Key concepts such as improvisation, embodiment, knowing oneself and one’s students, and a compassionate and relational approach to facilitating learning are unpacked throughout. Filled with practical examples based on scholarship and experience from and applicable to a wide range of disciplines, The Artistry of Teaching in Higher Education is divided into three distinct parts which explore: Creativity, improvisation and context; Authenticity and professional identity; Developing the artistry of teaching. An essential read for teachers, senior management, educational developers, and policy makers alike, this book acts as a call to action within higher education institutions to support and create space for learning, creativity and innovation, to the benefit of the development of their teachers’ expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explains how PRIO, the world’s oldest peace research institute, was founded and how it survived through crises. In this book, twenty-four of its researchers and associates, including Johan Galtung, Ingrid Eide, and Mari Holmboe Ruge, who founded the institute back in 1959, tell the stories of their roles in inventing and developing peace research. They reflect on their personal experiences with peace and conflict, tell what drove their peace engagement, and discuss the balance sought in the field between the cold dictates from academic rigor and the hot pursuit of peace, a desire for research to make a positive difference. Most of the chapters are interviews where one colleague interviews another. Some are self-reflective essays, while others are memorial essays written about a peace researcher who has passed away. Taken together, the book presents a lively picture of a thriving world-leading research environment and a wealth of conflicting or mutually reinforcing perspectives on war, violence, conflict, conflict management and resolution, negotiations and mediation, peacemaking, peace building, and the contested concept of peace. “The Oslo Stories is an indispensable source to the history of peace research.” Dr. Olav Njølstad, Director, Nobel Institute, Oslo

Book excerpt: Barbara Sjoholm arrived in London in the winter of 1970 at the age of twenty. Like countless young Americans in that tumultuous time, she wanted to leave a country at war and explore Europe; a small inheritance from her grandmother gave her the opportunity. Over the next three years, she lived in Barcelona, hitchhiked around Spain, and studied at the University of Granada. She managed a sourvenir shop in the Norwegian mountains and worked as a dishwasher on the Norwegian Coastal Steamer. Set on becoming a writer, she read everything from Colette to Dickens to Borges, changing her style and her subject every few weeks, and gradually found her voice. Incognito Street is the story of a young woman's search for artistic, political, and sexual identity while digesting the changing world around her. As she sheds the ghosts of her childhood, we come to know her quiet yet adventurous spirit. In moments that are tender, funny, bewildering, and suspenseful, we see an evocative look at Europe through the blossoming writer’s maturing eyes.

Book excerpt: This manual is designed to help teachers establish a principled framework for developing English at Key Stages 1 and 2. Covering all aspects of English, it will help teachers raise standards of achievement in pupils at all levels of fluency and confidence. The author uses case study material to relate theory to practice, covering issues such as classroom organization and management. She also provides guidance for planning and developing ideas with colleagues and with children, and offers suggestions for teaching strategies with photocopiable sheets and formats and ways to evaluate teaching. Separate sections deal with reading, writing, speaking and listening, and these different threads are drawn together in sections on knowledge about language - including spelling, grammar and punctuation - and study of texts - including media, poetry, drama, response to literature and the use of non-fiction texts. The final section deals with policy and schemes of work. Each chapter also offers information on: * assessment, recording and reporting, linked to scales of progression * frameworks for screening and supporting children who have difficulties with English * gender * working with parents * linguistic and cultural diversity Eve Bearne teaches at Homerton College, Cambridge.
