Unique uniaxial strain test equipment and procedures currently in use at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station for conducting both fundamental research studies and investigations of field sites are briefly described herein. Special procedures for producing laboratory-prepared and undisturbed test specimens of high quality are also described along with test results obtained from a wide variety of soil types. (Author).

A series of preliminary tests was conducted to evaluate the loading characteristics and overall performance of the facility and to compare results of uniaxial strain tests on dry sand conducted in the large facility with well documented and generally accepted results of tests on similar sand specimens conducted in a previously developed 12.70-cm-diam uniaxial strain test device.

Book excerpt: The report summarizes the results of material property investigations conducted for the MIDDLE GUST wet and dry test sites to support a program of preshot, two-dimensional, free-field ground shock calculations. Both sites are situated in the Pierre clay shale formation of Cretaceous age; however, the wet site is overlain by a 9-ft-thick water-bearing stratum of alluvium, while the dry site is essentially devoid of soil overburden materials. The geologic physiography, stratigraphy, structure, and lithology of the subsurface materials at each site are briefly described and compared herein. Details of the laboratory testing programs are reviewed, and an overview of the variations with depth of the dynamic compression and shear behavior of the materials at each site is presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique has been adapted to measure the dynamic response of soil to impulse loads. The experimental technique is relatively simple and can investigate soil response in regimes beyond the capabilities of current equipment used for soil dynamic laboratory investigations. Soils have several characteristics which must be considered in designing a SHPB experiment and evaluating the data (e.g., low wave speeds, nonlinear hysteretic behavior, and low unconfined compressive strength compared to the applied loads). Insight has been gained as to how these factors affect experimental accuracy and data reliability. The ability to replicate experimental results has been established. Also, the stress-strain response was found to be governed by the initial gas porosity of the specimen. No strain-rate dependence was found at strains less than the initial gas porosity. To model the response of dry desert alluvium, a microphysical constitutive equation has been devised. 20 refs., 19 figs.
