Book excerpt: Lynn Marchand, now living in the city, is the former organist for a men's prison. She is surprised when a former inmate choir member contacts her to tell her that another former inmate is looking for her. It seems that he is somehow implicated in a murder, and she was once a witness to his advising another inmate what kind of gun to purchase for shooting birds, deer or people. In a short time, three former inmates are protecting her from this not so nice ex-con. Even though Lynn gets phone calls from him, she tries to deny that anyone would want to harm her. During the ten years as prison organist, the men seemed to have nothing but respect and affection for her, so she is puzzled by this man's behavior. She enjoys being reunited with the men, and is touched by their concern; but as hard as they try to protect Lynn, one of the bad guys kidnaps her. Can the three brave men save her?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schatzkästlein Des Rheinischen Hausfreundes To our knowledge Hebel's Schatzkastlein has here tofore never been republished in the United States. This might be termed a sin of omission, because Johann Peter Hebel (born 1760, died 1826) counts among the dominant masters of German prose. Every reader in Germany loved and still loves Hebel for the humor and the sincere purpose of his writings, and every critic lauds and commends the classic simplicity and beauty of his style. He endeavored successfully to provide entertainment and enlightenment for the so-called middle class of his countrymen, and the grace with which he did so has not been surpassed or even attained by any other German author. He was the friend and the poet of the people and for the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Tragic Women on Shakespearean Stages argues that ancient Greek plays exerted a powerful and uncharted influence on early modern England's dramatic landscape. Drawing on original research to challenge longstanding assumptions about Greek texts' invisibility, the book shows not only that the plays were more prominent than we have believed, but that early modern readers and audiences responded powerfully to specific plays and themes. The Greek plays most popular in the period were not male-centered dramas such as Sophocles' Oedipus, but tragedies by Euripides that focused on raging bereaved mothers and sacrificial virgin daughters, especially Hecuba and Iphigenia. Because tragedy was firmly linked with its Greek origin in the period's writings, these iconic female figures acquired a privileged status as synecdoches for the tragic theater and its ability to conjure sympathetic emotions in audiences. When Hamlet reflects on the moving power of tragic performance, he turns to the most prominent of these figures: 'What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba/ That he should weep for her?' Through readings of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporary dramatists, this book argues that newly visible Greek plays, identified with the origins of theatrical performance and represented by passionate female figures, challenged early modern writers to reimagine the affective possibilities of tragedy, comedy, and the emerging genre of tragicomedy.

Most Western journalists portrayed Ho Chi Minh as a nationalist patriot. As a former Vanguard Youth Troop in Ha Noi, North Viet Nam, who passionately sang “who loves Uncle Ho more than us children” to praise Ho when he seized power in 1945, the author says: “Ho was a villain.” This book is a truthful account of what actually happened in Viet Nam from 1945, Dien Bien Phu in 1953 to its demise in April 1975.

Blue Reynolds, celebrity talk show host and queen of daytime television, appears to have it all. But no one knows the secret she has harbored for the last twenty years—a secret that could destroy her image, her reputation, and her career. A week in Key West to do her show on location brings Blue a much-needed change of pace—and an unexpected reunion with an old flame, Mitch Forrester. Helping him launch a television series may help her recapture the kind of genuine romance long missing from her life. But it also means dealing with Mitch’s disapproving son, Julian, who is only nine years younger than Blue. Back from his years as a war photographer in the world’s most dangerous hotspots, Julian struggles to get close to his father while making his disdain for Blue crystal clear—which makes his desire for her all the more surprising. As serendipity and scandal collide, Therese Fowler’s passionate, illuminating novel takes a dramatic turn deep into our own hearts, as the healing power of love transforms regrets into new beginnings.
