Book Synopsis Uneasy Military Encounters by : Ruth Streicher
Download or read book Uneasy Military Encounters written by Ruth Streicher and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uneasy Military Encounters presents a historically and theoretically grounded political ethnography of the Thai military's counterinsurgency practices in the southern borderland, home to the greater part of the Malay-Muslim minority. Ruth Streicher argues that counterinsurgency practices mark the southern population as the racialized, religious, and gendered other of the Thai, which contributes to producing Thailand as an imperial formation: a state formation based on essentialized difference between the Thai and their others. Through a genealogical approach, Uneasy Military Encounters addresses broad conceptual questions of imperial politics in a non-Western context: How can we understand imperial policing in a country that was never colonized? How is "Islam" constructed in a state that is officially secular and promotes Buddhist tolerance? What are the (historical) dynamics of imperial patriarchy in a context internationally known for its gender pluralism? The resulting ethnography excavates the imperial politics of concrete encounters between the military and the southern population in the ongoing conflict in southern Thailand.

Book excerpt: How did a big-game fishing trip rudely interrupted by sharks inspire one of the key scenes in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea? How did Robert Louis Stevenson's cruise to the cannibal-infested South Sea islands prove instrumental in his writing of The Beach of Falesa and The Ebb Tide? How did Masefield survive Cape Horn and a near-nervous breakdown to write Sea Fever? The waters of this world have swirled through storytelling ever since the Celts spun the tale of Beowulf and Homer narrated The Odyssey. This enthralling book takes us on a tour of the most dangerous, exciting and often eccentric escapades of literature's sailing stars, and how these true stories inspired and informed their best-loved works. Arthur Ransome, Erskine Childers, Jack London and many others are featured as we find out how extraordinary fact fed into unforgettable fiction.

Book Synopsis The Uneasy Conscience of a White Christian by : Clifford Williams
Download or read book The Uneasy Conscience of a White Christian written by Clifford Williams and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do White people bear moral responsibility for racial disparities? Are White Christians under a spiritual mandate to make racial equity a priority? Clifford Williams taught philosophy at Christian colleges for many years, including a course on race. He has journeyed alongside students as they gained insights about racism. In this book, he draws from deeply personal stories as he shows the need for White Christians to recognize the impact of racism and to cultivate key character traits which enable them to pursue racial equity. In succinct and thoughtful prose, interwoven with first-person accounts of racialized experiences by people of color, Williams describes the importance of the Golden Rule, the power and effects of racial socialization, and the harm racism does to those who harbor it. He asks the haunting question, "Why do White people react so strongly to Black power?" He explains why widespread church integration in the United States may never exist. He unpacks the concept of White identity and links police brutality to faulty moral perception. This book gently explains what White Christians need to do to make racial equity a priority.
Book Synopsis Pathology and Visual Culture by : Natasha Ruiz-Gómez
Download or read book Pathology and Visual Culture written by Natasha Ruiz-Gómez and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Natasha Ruiz-Gómez delves into an extraordinary collection of pathological drawings, photographs, sculptures, and casts created by neurologists at Paris’s Hôpital de la Salpêtrière in the nineteenth century. Led by Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893) and known collectively as the Salpêtrière School, these savants-artistes produced works that demonstrated an engagement with contemporary artistic discourses and the history of art, even as the artists/clinicians professed their dedication to absolute objectivity. During his lifetime, Charcot became internationally famous for his studies of hysteria and hypnosis, establishing himself as a pioneer in modern neurology. However, this book brings to light the often-overlooked contributions of other clinicians, such as Dr. Paul Richer, who created “scientific artworks” that merged scientific objectivity with artistic intervention. Challenging conventional interpretations of visual media in medicine, Ruiz-Gómez analyzes how these images and objects documented symptoms and neuropathology while defying disciplinary categorization. Grounded in extensive archival research, Pathology and Visual Culture targets an international audience of historians and students of art, visual culture, medicine, and the medical humanities. It will also captivate neurologists and anyone interested in fin-de-siècle French history and culture.
