Book excerpt: I m just searching for myself in a little time capsule that remodels itself with each spring that passes by, and I know I m buried with questions that outnumber the answers, but I can t find myself the further I dig. Devonte. My first poetry collection Little Time Capsule captures the most self-reflecting and introspective poetic moments of my young adulthood. In weeding through my old journals and napkin scribbles and online posts to gather enough material for this book, I put together a compilation that I m hoping will make people smile and want to re-read over and over again. Within these pages are twenty-three unique poems delving into everything from my father s sudden passing to my struggles accepting myself as an LGBT youth and much more. I began writing in the eighth grade after our teacher asked my class to create a poem using our vocabulary words for that week. No one volunteered to read his to the class, so I did mine and got a good reaction. I never forgot how it felt the first time I strung words together to create what sounded like music in my head. I like cleverness and flashiness to poetry. I like writing in different styles. I love the challenge of wowing an audience and giving myself something cool to read later on. The poetry in Little Time Capsule was written over a span of nearly 10 years, roughly from 2003 to 2013 with the earliest poem being It, my personal favorite out of this bunch and the latest being Crystal Compass, which best depicts my state of mine before I decided to publish. I narrowed down the list of chosen poems from 139 to just 23. That was hard to do considering some of my poems stuck with me for years before I no longer felt comfortable reciting them. My beliefs tend to change over time as I mature, so something I said when I was 15 may turn out to be something I cringe at when I m 23. I feel it was best to publish these precious poems before I grew any further, hence the title of this book. I ve placed these poems in a time capsule for me to unearth later in life, for me to look back on and maybe share with future loved ones and the world. Here s a little about me: I was born in Chicago in 1989 to parents Claudette and Avery but spent my coming of age years in Meridian, MS. I love maintaining long term friendships and spending time with my beloved grandmother Lee who helped put me through college. Devonte is the recipient of the Winifred Farrar Award for English and also the Earl Love Guyton Scholarship which is awarded for showing promise in the field of communication (demonstrated) through a portfolio. In 2007 he won first place in the Meridian Community College Literary Review for poetry with the poem Twisting My Tongue in Pig-Latin and earned his bachelor s degree in communication from Mississippi State University in 2012.

This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no one's death has stirred more interest, controversy, and theories than Marilyn Monroe's August 4 of 1962. In Murder Orthodoxies, author Donald R. McGovern analyzes and examines the many theories that Monroe was murdered by a host of curious characters-from the middle Kennedy brothers to brutal gangsters to aliens. McGovern separates fact from fiction and theory from outlandish rumor. He addresses and debunks the usual allegations related to Monroe's death, the secrets recorded in her little red diary, her scheduled whistle-blowing press conference, the murder plots by organized crime and the brothers Kennedy, and the fatal injection of drugs, along with many others. In Murder Orthodoxies, McGovern restores logic and sanity to the investigation of Monroe's death. His thesis is based upon the premise that the engines of conspiracies are started and fueled by opinion, not by facts. His credible conclusions are based on logic, science, toxicology, and forensic evidence.

Book excerpt: Douglas Elves writes of the North Saskatchewan River. Ranging from midstream to far watershed, the Saskatchewan Glacier to Cumberland House and beyond, his poems are of those who have lived and worked on or near this river: the coal-miner fishing in the foothills stream; the little girl roller-skating in a hotel above the river; the young farmers exchanging labour; the fur trader following a moonlight-coloured horse; the Belgian lawyer homesteading alone in Saskatchewan; Doukhobors making linen by the river’s Great Bend; sons of Batoche threshing grain; and so many more. While most poems here are ‘riverlines,’ this book includes others, including some written in youth. riverlines.ca

Book excerpt: An “astounding” (Terrance Hayes) debut collection of poems – Winner of the National Poetry Series Competition In this powerful debut collection, sam sax explores and explodes the linkages between desire, addiction, and the history of mental health. These brave, formally dexterous poems examine antiquated diagnoses and procedures from hysteria to lobotomy; offer meditations on risky sex; and take up the poet’s personal and family histories as mental health patients and practitioners. Ultimately, Madness attempts to build a queer lineage out of inherited language and cultural artifacts; these poems trouble the static categories of sanity, heterosexuality, masculinity, normality, and health. sax’s innovative collection embodies the strange and disjunctive workings of the mind as it grapples to make sense of the world around it.

Book excerpt: Innocence is a rich and emotive idea, but what does it really mean? This is a significant question both for literary interpretation and theology—yet one without a straightforward answer. This volume provides a critical overview of key issues and historical developments in the concept of innocence, delving into its ambivalences and exploring the many transformations of innocence within literature and theology. The contributions in this volume, by leading scholars in their respective fields, provide a range of responses to this critical question. They address literary and theological treatments of innocence from the birth of modernity to the present day. They discuss major symbols and themes surrounding innocence, including purity and sexuality, childhood and inexperience, nostalgia and utopianism, morality and virtue. This interdisciplinary collection explores the many sides of innocence, from aesthetics to ethics, from semantics to metaphysics, examining the significance of innocence as both a concept and a word. The contributions reveal how innocence has progressed through centuries of dramatic alterations, secularizations and subversions, while retaining an enduring relevance as a key concept in human thought, experience, and imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best friendship blossoms into something more in this gorgeously written queer literary romance. "The heartache and longing of witnessing a beloved character pine hopelessly over her best friend has never brought me this much unadulterated joy." –National Book Award Finalist Sonora Reyes, author of The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School Over the past five years, Mitra Esfahani has known two constants: her best friend Bea Ortega and The Book—a dogeared moleskin she and Bea have been filling with the stanzas of an epic, never-ending poem since they were 13. For introverted Mitra, The Book is one of the few places she can open herself completely and where she gets to see all sides of brilliant and ebullient Bea. There, they can share everything—Mitra’s complicated feelings about her absent mother, Bea’s heartache over her most recent breakup—nothing too messy or complicated for The Book. Nothing except the one thing with the power to change their entire friendship: the fact that Mitra is helplessly in love with Bea. Told in lyrical, confessional prose and snippets of poetry Just Another Epic Love Poem takes readers on a journey that is equal parts joyful, heartbreaking, and funny as Mitra and Bea navigate the changing nature of I love you.
