Book excerpt: Efficient and equitable policies for managing disaster risks and adapting to global environmental change are critically dependent on development of robust options supported by integrated modeling. The book is based on research and state-of-the art models developed at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) and within its cooperation network. It addresses the methodological complexities of assessing disaster risks, which call for stochastic simulation, optimization methods and economic modeling. Furthermore, it describes policy frameworks for integrated disaster risk management, including stakeholder participation facilitated by user-interactive decision-support tools. Applications and results are presented for a number of case studies at different problem scales and in different socio-economic contexts, and their implications for loss sharing policies and economic development are discussed. Among others, the book presents studies for insurance policies for earthquakes in the Tuscany region in Italy and flood risk in the Tisza river basin in Hungary. Further, it investigates the economic impact of natural disasters on development and possible financial coping strategies; and applications are shown for selected South Asian countries. The book is addressed both to researchers and to organizations involved with catastrophe risk management and risk mitigation policies.

By 2008, only thirteen of these had become high-income countries. Why do so many middle-income countries fail to develop after a promising start, becoming mired in the so-called middle-income trap? This interdisciplinary volume addresses the special challenges that middle-income countries confront from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. It is the first volume that addresses law and development issues in middle-income countries from the perspective of political, administrative and legal institutions and policies. The goal is to provide international development agencies and domestic policy makers with feasible recommendations to address the wide range of technically, politically and socially complex issues that middle-income countries face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundwork for the Asian economic miracle was established in the last 25 or so years--the time period covered in this book. China and Vietnam started substituting pragmatism for communist ideology and Thailand started on a path toward greater democracy. The timing was perfect for an American United Nations representative to arrive in the two communist countries because, for the first time, both placed a premium on improving relations with the U.S. and both were moving toward a market economy. This book acquaints the reader with evolving political, economic and social conditions in these countries and the role played by UN organizations. A chapter on the South Pacific details the challenges of providing useful development assistance in small isolated countries. The book also reveals a hidden side of the United Nations, the role played by more than 30 UN agencies, funds and programs in providing development and humanitarian assistance. The past two or three decades were a period of great upheaval in Asia. Enormous events and developments involving the United Nations are analyzed in the book. These include the Tiananmen Square crisis in China; 300,000 Cambodian refugees camped along the Thai border; escaping the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge; efforts to rid the Golden Triangle of opium production; the sensitive diplomacy required in fostering cooperation among North Korea, South Korea, China and Mongolia; and a firsthand account of negotiating the international agreement creating the Mekong River Commission.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disasters have been on the rise over the last decade. Their increasing frequency and scale pose mounting economic and humanitarian challenges and necessitate effective management of disaster risk as an integral part of development planning. UNDP has a significant role in disaster management, helping to formulate and implement disaster reduction policies, and support recovery activities in more than 50 countries. Recent efforts to more closely link climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction are highlighted. The evaluation notes uneven progress amongst the UNDP country offices in integrating disaster risk reduction with other UNDP priorities such as poverty reduction, governance and environmental protection. The report emphasizes that addressing social and economic vulnerability requires a comprehensive programming approach, and UNDP's most important role is to assist countries in the development dimensions of the issue, especially risk reduction and vulnerability. The evaluation recommends that UNDP disaster risk reduction strategy should be revised to more directly address adaptation to climate change; and that UNDP administrative procedures should be improved so that they no longer constrain effective programming in natural disasters -- Publisher's website.

In 2009, it became a lower-middle-income country. However, labor productivity has remained low even with ample foreign direct investment.Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) must now respond to increase skilled workers in the labor market. This report examines Viet Nam's challenges and opportunities in TVET. It recommends reforms in governance structure, organization, and management of TVET; effective teaching of the right skills; greater enterprise-based training and financial support; and equal access to higher quality training particularly for the disadvantaged population such as ethnic minority students.
