This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although underwater archaeology has assumed its rightful place as an important subdiscipline in the field, the published literature has not kept pace with the rapid increase in the number of both prehistoric and historic underwater sites. The editors have assembled an internationally distinguished roster of contributors to fill this gap. The book presents geographical and topical approaches, and focuses on technology, law, public and private institutional roles and goals, and the research and development of future technologies and public programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume initiates a new series of books on maritime or underwater archaeology, and as the editor of the series I welcome its appearance with great excitement. It is appropriate that the first book of the series is a collection of articles intended for gradu ate or undergraduate courses in underwater archaeology, since the growth in academic opportunities for students is an important sign of the vitality of this subdiscipline. The layman will enjoy the book as well. Academic and public interest in shipwrecks and other submerged archaeological sites is indicated by a number of factors. Every year there are 80 to 90 research papers presented at the Society for Historical Archaeology's Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology, and the Proceedings are published. Public interest is shown by extensive press coverage of shipwreck investigations. One of the most important advances in recent years has been the passage of the Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987, for the first time providing national-level law con cerning underwater archeological sites. The legislation has withstood a number of legal challenges by commercial treasure salvors, a very hopeful sign for the long-term pres ervation of this nonrenewable type of cultural resource. The underwater archaeological discoveries of 1995 were particularly noteworthy. The Texas Historical Commission discovered the Belle, one of La Salle's ships, and the CSS Hunley was found by a joint project of South Carolina and a private nonprofit organization called NUMA.

Book excerpt: This is the first effort to compile a Perspectives volume that represents published articles from both the SHA journal, Historical Archaeology and the ACUA Under- water Archaeology Proceedings. This volume represents a comprehensive look at the field of underwater archaeology from the society's earliest conferences to present. Because this volume is compiled from a compilation of sources produced over the years, there are a range of publication styles, printers, and layouts resulting in a number of inconsistencies that can not be helped even in today's technologically advanced world of printing. Many of the articles only exist as print copies and today are very difficult to find. Thus, a number of the articles are facsimiles of the original paper publications. The Conference took place January 5-8, 2022 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings present the current research conducted by academics, avocational archaeologists, students, and resource managers. The papers published in this volume were originally presented as talks in organized conference sessions and are edited print versions of the research presented. They cover a broad range of topics related to underwater and nautical archaeology, from discussions of specific ships and shipwrecks around the world, to the results of scientific research and analysis, to broad-based data management tools and the development of training studies. Making information widely accessible is one of the key missions of the ACUA. The annual publication of the ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings provides a timely outlet for professional research, and an opportunity for students and avocationals to share their work with a wide audience.

Book Synopsis Underwater and Maritime Archaeology in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Margaret E Leshikar-Denton

This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waters of Latin America and the Caribbean are rich with archaeological sites, including coastal settlements, defensive forts, freshwater sources, fishing-related activities, navigational aids, anchorages, harbours, ports, shipbuilding sites, shipwrecks and survivor camps. Tragically, treasure-hunting has had a deep impact on these maritime cultural resources, especially on shipwrecks. In the last 20 years, archaeologists have been fighting the battle against these treasure hunters in an attempt to preserve these resources as a source of cultural heritage, rather than allow them to be viewed solely as a means for financial reward. Case studies written primarily by Latin American and Caribbean archaeologists demonstrate exciting and cutting edge research, conservation, site preservation, and interpretation. As a result, this groundbreaking book documents the emerging research interests of maritime archaeologists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
