Edwards Professor of Psychiatry University of Kentucky School of Medicine and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987-11-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the immense obstacles they face, many alcoholics do manage to recover. The question is "how?" In this groundbreaking book, a doctor with over 25 years experience working with alcoholics gets inside their minds and explains the behaviors and thought processes they use to get sober and stay sober. In most instances, Arnold Ludwig has found that a lasting recovery can only begin after certain crucial attitude changes. Regardless of the motivation of alcoholics, powerful forces lure them back to drink. To remain sober, alcoholics must recognize these forces and the dangerous frame of mind that fuels them. Then, they must use a variety of techniques that have been demonstrated to be effective for resisting temptation, particularly during the early phases of recovery. In time, individuals will need to develop a set of attitudes, values and behaviors--which the author describes in detail--that perpetuate and strengthen their sobriety. Being sober is far more than simply not drinking; it is a new way of life. Over the years, the author has worked with over 1000 alcoholics from all walks of life and within many different settings--hospital clinics, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, detoxification centers, and private homes--about one fourth of whom had quit drinking for significant periods of time. Incorporating the findings of other researchers into his own and including many clinical vignettes and personal anecdotes, he explores the basic principles necessary for achieving a successful recovery. Ludwig has especially concerned himself with the nature of alcoholic craving and loss of control and describes the techniques that can help individuals to conquer their urges and also to lessen the chances of relapse. This book does not use the word "treatment." Instead it talks about what is really at the heart of the matter-- sobriety--and how to achieve it. It will give new hope and insight not only to the recovering alcoholic, but also to their families, counselors and doctors.

This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcoholism, like other forms of addiction, is a complex disease, but treatment does not have to be complicated. The stigma/shame of the disease comes from the behaviors developed from the disease. These behaviors must be addressed and changed using a therapy program. Sobriety is more than abstinence and relapse prevention. Family members are severely emotionally and mentally injured and need as much treatment as the alcoholic/addict so they can become healthy persons. A clinical social worker, author Alice M. Lebron has dedicated her career to finding and developing information to help individuals suffering from alcoholism/addiction, as well people directly affected by the disease-their families. The author believes that “recovery enables a person to become the person they were born to become,” and through this book, she aims to guide you and your family down the path of change and healing, which she has been doing for more than forty years.

Book excerpt: People may choose to ignore their animal heritage by interpreting their behavior as divinely inspired, socially purposeful, or even self-serving, all of which they attribute to being human, but they masticate, fornicate, and procreate, much as chimps and apes do, so they should have little cause to get upset if they learn that they act like other primates when they politically agitate, debate, abdicate, placate, and administrate, too." -- from the book King of the Mountain presents the startling findings of Arnold M. Ludwig's eighteen-year investigation into why people want to rule. The answer may seem obvious -- power, privilege, and perks -- but any adequate answer also needs to explain why so many rulers cling to power even when they are miserable, trust nobody, feel besieged, and face almost certain death. Ludwig's results suggest that leaders of nations tend to act remarkably like monkeys and apes in the way they come to power, govern, and rule. Profiling every ruler of a recognized country in the twentieth century -- over 1,900 people in all, Ludwig establishes how rulers came to power, how they lost power, the dangers they faced, and the odds of their being assassinated, committing suicide, or dying a natural death. Then, concentrating on a smaller sub-set of 377 rulers for whom more extensive personal information was available, he compares six different kinds of leaders, examining their characteristics, their childhoods, and their mental stability or instability to identify the main predictors of later political success. Ludwig's penetrating observations, though presented in a lighthearted and entertaining way, offer important insight into why humans have engaged in war throughout recorded history as well as suggesting how they might live together in peace.

Book excerpt: Alcohol and Public Policy provides a set of scientific reviews, written by a distinquished team of international scientists and policy analysts, which explore the scientific basis for policies on alcohol and alcohol problems.Important contemporary issures are critically reviewed including a mapping of trends in world consumption and examination of the most recent evidence on how drinking is shared out within any given population. Evidence on the relationship between quantity drunk and harm done is explored both asregards the individual drinking and population levels of consumption. Suicide, interpersonal violence, and dependence risk are all considered as well as the physical harms of alcohol abuse. Other chapters deal with the effect of pricing on consumption, the population level, impact on treatment, theclimate of public discourse, and the alleged protective influence of moderate drinking. Finally, the application of economics to the determination of the 'best buy' in a practical mix of policies is examined. In an area often clouded by partisan and vested interests, this book provides a clear objective approach to the subject. Its conmporehensive and balncedcoverage of alcohol and public health issues will benefit anyone working in these areas.
