These nanostructures benefit diverse applications, including catalysis, bioelectronics, energy conversion and storage. It has been acknowledged that the sizes and shapes of metal nanoparticles can significantly impact their performances. In this dissertation, we focused on the shape-control mechanisms within the solution-phase synthesis of Cu and Ag nanocrystals using molecular dynamics simulations. The shapes of nanocrystal seeds are highly sensitive to the solution environment surrounding them. Our recent work has focused on characterizing the structures of Ag, Cu, Au, and Pd nanocrystals (at various sizes between 1-2 nm) using parallel tempering simulations based on embedded-atom method potentials. These simulations render the distribution of thermodynamically favored crystal shapes as a function of temperature and size in vacuum for each metal we studied. We also obtained kinetic information on the transformation pathways of clusters between different nanocrystal motifs and calculated the energy barriers. As observed in experiments and other theoretical studies, we find that many nanocrystal shape transitions are initiated by surface reconstruction. It allows the solvent, capping molecules, and additives which adsorb on the metal surfaces to modulate these transformations in solution-phase syntheses. To probe the solution-phase synthesis of Cu nanocrystals, we studied the assembly of long-chain alkylamine structure-directing agents (SDAs) in the presence of aqueous-phase on: i) infinite Cu planar surfaces; ii) thin and ultra-long five-fold Cu nanowires; and iii) a small decahedral Cu seed. The configuration and mobility of alkylamine SDAs are significantly impacted by the morphology of the Cu nanostructures, temperature and alkylamine chain length. The mobility of long-chain SDAs is temperature-dependent, which impacts the growth rate and consequently the morphology of a growing nanocrystal. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) has severed as an SDA in the shape formation of Ag nanocrystals in ethylene glycol (EG) solvent at moderate temperatures. To study how a long PVP chain interacts with a small Ag nanocluster in EG, we consider a Ag nanocluster, SDA, and solvent molecules into parallel tempering simulations, and probe the thermodynamically favored shapes of Ag nanoclusters at various sizes between 1-2 nm in solution-phase at the typical experimental temperatures. The equilibrium shapes of a Ag nanocrystal are subject to its size and solution environment.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1960 three men accidentally discover a decaying body on a deserted island, later identified as the body of a Danish codicologist who had been missing for several months. An investigation ensues and the case is mysteriously linked to the contents of a medieval manuscript known as the Book of Flatey. Before long another body is found in Flatey, but this time an eagle has been carved into the victim's back in blood, in the ancient Viking tradition.

Book excerpt: Through molecular simulations we have observed that the surface of gold nanoparticles become highly corrugated by the adsorption of alkanethiolate self assembled monolayers (SAMs). Furthermore, as the temperature is increased, the SAMs dissolve into the gold nanoparticle, creating a liquid mixture at temperatures much lower than the melting temperature of the gold nanoparticle. By analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles at temperatures below the melting point of gold, with different SAM chain lengths and surface coverage properties, we have determined that the system is metastable. The model and computational results that provide support for this hypothesis are presented in this paper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascination with gold is a story which spans millennia, however scientists have recently found a new interest for gold when it is divided into miniscule grains, such as gold nanoparticles. This scientific enthusiasm started in various fields of science in the middle of the 1980s and the present book offers a panorama of the major scientific achievements obtained with gold nanoparticles.Various topics are reviewed such as: gold nanoparticle preparation methods, their plasmon resonance and thermo-optical properties, their catalytic properties, their use in biology and medicine as well as their possible toxicity and, finally, their future technological applications. The book also contains an in-depth study of the use of gold nanoparticles throughout the ages, starting from times where the concept of nanoparticles was beyond the realm of human imagination. All these topics are presented by world-class scientists within a set of self-contained chapters. This book may be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students and scientists who need an introduction to gold nanoparticles. It is also suitable for experts in the related areas of chemistry, biology, material science, optics and physics, who are interested in broadening their knowledge and who wish to have an overview of the subject. Each chapter gradually leads the reader from the basics of a topic towards some of the current scientific challenges in the area. The necessary background material to achieve a solid understanding of each topic and the scientific literature to go further in the field is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As nanotechnology has developed over the last two decades, some nanostructures, such as nanotubes, nanowires, and nanoparticles, have become very popular. However, recent research has led to the discovery of other, less-common nanoforms, which often serve as building blocks for more complex structures. In an effort to organize the field, the Handbook of Less-Common Nanostructures presents an informal classification based mainly on the less-common nanostructures. A small nanotechnological encyclopedia, this book: Describes a range of little-known nanostructures Offers a unifying vision of the synthesis of nanostructures and the generalization of rare nanoforms Includes a CD-ROM with color versions of more than 100 nanostructures Explores the fabrication of rare nanostructures, including modern physical, chemical, and biological synthesis techniques The Handbook of Less-Common Nanostructures discusses a classification system not directly related to the dimensionality and chemical composition of nanostructure-forming compounds or composite. Instead, it is based mainly on the less-common nanostructures. Possessing unusual shapes and high surface areas, these structures are potentially very useful for catalytic, medical, electronic, and many other applications.

Book excerpt: In order to utilize the novel electrical, magnetic, optical, and physical properties of coated metal nanoparticles, one must be able to efficiently predict the nanoparticle size-dependent properties and to fabricate consistently sized nanoparticles. Both of these goals can be obtained through the use of numerical simulation. In this work the gold nanoparticle and nanoparticle/self-assembled monolayer systems have been analyzed with a physically accurate and computationally efficient numerical simulation. The simulation model and method are described in the following paper.
