Book excerpt: Due to the complexity and interconnectivity of many biological processes, an integrative systems biology approach is required to better understand them. The integration of various omics data (including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics data) will provide a holistic view that highlights the relationship among the various biomolecules and their functions in plant growth, resistance, quality, and many other important traits. Recent advances in analytical power and in the ability to process large data sets has enabled researchers to integrate multi-omics data and have a much deeper knowledge of the cell, tissue, organ, or even an entire organism being studied. The goal of this Research Topic is not only to publish high-quality and reliable omics data but also to answer the bigger question of how to integrate and correlate different data sets from multiple omics studies. Can one omics data set be used as a primary data set for the design and execution of another omics study? If so, then how it can be done? What are its pre-requisites? How can we plan research involving multi-omics approach to reach a meaningful conclusion? These are the questions that need our attention and their answers are critical for the future of omics-based research. For this Research Topic, we welcome contributors to submit manuscripts related to the following themes: • Studies on plant-based genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics; • Development of new analytical methods for omics utilizing in plants; • Advancements in the current analytical methods for utilizing omics in plants; • Integration of multi-omics data sets; • Development of new statistical methods for data analysis.

Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This book is a compilation of carefully chosen chapters that cover the subjects of nanoscale matter, sensing, and labelling applications. It is aimed primarily at scientists and researchers who are already involved in theme-based research or who are just starting their careers. Despite the diverse nature of the topics covered, which include a range of materials in various forms and uses, the emphasis is primarily on sensing and labelling phenomena. The book begins with materials quantification in nanoscale systems by using an innovative technique like "molecular secondary ion mass spectrometry without calibration standards". Subsequently, the book features an array of materials such as inorganic semiconductor nanoscale particles, carbon dots, rare-earth oxides, polymer nanocomposites, and a few biomaterials, all of which illustrate their functionality and potential for deployment in a wide variety of sensing applications. Although the book delves into the technical aspects of fabrication workouts to some extent, the focus is predominantly on the physical principles, mechanisms, and relevance involved in sensing and labelling applications. The book covers a wide range of topics that leverage the unique properties of nanoscale materials. By carefully selecting appropriate active materials, the authors explore the detection of LPG, hazardous and explosive gases, as well as humidity sensing and hydrogen evolution. It also delves into photo-sensing and persistent photoconductivity by using nanoscale semiconductors, which are used for heavy metal sensing and UV sensing, respectively. The use of metal nanoparticles in various forms is reviewed to address issues related to water contamination, biofilm protection, and food-borne pathogens. The book also discusses surface plasmon resonance, starting with its basic principles and expanding to its relevance in a broader perspective, with a greater focus on applied biosensing. Nanoscale ferrites and magnetic systems are explored with an emphasis on magnetic sensing and actuation. Lastly, the book explores the use of rare-earth-based nanosystems, highlighting persistent luminescence and up/down-converted transitions, which have unprecedented applications in bioimaging and biolabeling. Every effort has been made to strike a balance between the observed phenomena in the emerging areas of sensing applications and suitable theoretical treatments there in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As genome-sequencing costs continue their downward spiral, sequencing of closely related organisms has become increasingly a?ordable. The growing amount of genomic data available demands for the constant development of computational tools to be applied in comparative genomics. The RECOMB Workshop on C- parative Genomics (RECOMB-CG) is devoted to bringing together scientists working on all aspects of comparative genomics, from computer scientists, ma- ematicians and statisticians working on novel computational approaches for genome analysis and comparison, to biologists applying these computational tools to study the structure and the evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. This volume contains the 19 papers presented at the 7th Annual RECOMB-CG workshop held during September 27–29, 2009 at the Renyi Institute, in Budapest, Hungary. The papers published in these proceedings were selected for oral p- sentation from 31 submissions from scientists around the world. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee in a stringent and thoughtful peer-review process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is emerging as a novel sensing paradigm in the Internet of Things (IoTs) due to the proliferation of smart devices (e.g., smartphones, wearable devices) in people’s daily lives. These ubiquitous devices provide an opportunity to harness the wisdom of crowds by recruiting mobile users to collectively perform sensing tasks, which largely collect data about a wide range of human activities and the surrounding environment. However, users suffer from resource consumption such as battery, processing power, and storage, which discourages users’ participation. To ensure the participation rate, it is necessary to employ an incentive mechanism to compensate users’ costs such that users are willing to take part in crowdsensing. This book sheds light on the design of incentive mechanisms for MCS in the context of game theory. Particularly, this book presents several game-theoretic models for MCS in different scenarios. In Chapter 1, the authors present an overview of MCS and state the significance of incentive mechanism for MCS. Then, in Chapter 2, 3, 4, and 5, the authors propose a long-term incentive mechanism, a fair incentive mechanism, a collaborative incentive mechanism, and a coopetition-aware incentive mechanism for MCS, respectively. Finally, Chapter 6 summarizes this book and point out the future directions. This book is of particular interest to the readers and researchers in the field of IoT research, especially in the interdisciplinary field of network economics and IoT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goodwill, sometimes purchased but often more significantly internally generated, is the major constituent of the value of many listed companies. Accounting aims to provide users of financial statements with useful information, and more than fifty current International Financial Reporting Standards prescribe accounting disclosure requirements in minute detail. However, these Standards dismiss internally generated goodwill with a single brief provision that it is not to be brought to account at all. The impairment regime now laid down for dealing with purchased goodwill contains severe flaws, while previous methods have also been found to be unsatisfactory. This book traces the history of the goodwill accounting controversy in detail and demonstrates that it has been a prime example of an issue ‘conceived in a way that it is in principle unsolvable’. It explores the problem of recognising the importance of goodwill as a whole and finding a way of presenting meaningful information regarding it in the context of the financial statements. The author’s proposed solution builds upon research undertaken and uses a Market Capitalization Statement, based on a modification of nineteenth century ‘double accounting’ in a modern context. Examples show that the proposed Market Capitalization Statement has the potential to provide significant information not currently available form conventional financial statements, which in turn are freed to present clearer information.
