There is a deeper meaning behind the performance, created in specified details in the movements and shapes of Arjuna. So, in what way do the shadow puppets` shapes and movements support the characterization of the Wayang Kulit character “Arjuna” in the play “Lakon Makutha Rama - The perang”? The essay shows in which way it is possible to understand the characters of Wayang Kulit figures from an Indonesian view. Indonesians learn about the traditional meanings of the puppets’ features from the beginning of their childhood on people in the western world, however, often do not even notice the small details and what they mean, such as the shape of the puppets’ eyes and the extraordinary hairstyle. Arjuna’s features regarding his outward appearance as well as his behavior represent perfection. In order to reflect on his specific abilities, attitudes as a fighter and royal figure, it is sensible to take a closer look at the play “Lakon Makutha Rama - The perang”. In the further development, it turned out to make most sense to analyze a battle scene in which Arjuna focuses on his enemy and where the precision of his movements play an essential role for the understanding of the personality of the characters on the one side and the meaning of the entire play on the other side. Thereby, Arjuna’s refined strategy becomes evident and a lot of movements are needed to finally win the fight, which highlight his characteristics as well as the shapes of his shadow.

Book excerpt: During the dramatic economic and social transformation of late twentieth-century Indonesia, theatre in Central Java featured a familiar cast of rulers, nobles, clown servants and ordinary people. However these performances were not a repetition of age-old cultural "traditions." Instead, by stretching the framework of Javanese theatre convention, theatre troupes challenged dominant cultural and political values. As political pressures intensified in the final months of the New Order regime, these witty, critical performances drew enthusiastic, oppositionist crowds. The dismantling of repressive state control after the fall of Suharto in 1998 diminished interest in political critiques from the stage, and growing economic weakness caused patronage and sponsorship to dry up. By 2003–2004, however, a revival was underway as performers engaged with the politics of regional autonomy and democratization, and actors responded to the devastating Yogyakarta earthquake of 2006 by staging shows in the worst-affected areas to help sustain community spirit and pride in local culture. Barbara Hatley’s account of more than thirty years of theatre activities and social change shows how performers and audiences have adapted, resisted, incorporated and survived. As Indonesian society evolves, Javanese performances continue to engage with ever-changing social contexts, expressing the dynamic resilience and sense of identity of those who stage and watch them.

Recently, women have begun to study and perform in this traditionally male role, an innovation that has triggered resistance and controversy. In Women in the Shadows, Jennifer Goodlander draws on her own experience training as a dalang as well as interviews with early women dalang and leading artists to upend the usual assessments of such gender role shifts. Book excerpt: A Certain Age is an unconventional, evocative work of history and a moving reflection on memory, modernity, space, time, and the limitations of traditional historical narratives. Rudolf Mrázek visited Indonesia throughout the 1990s, recording lengthy interviews with elderly intellectuals in and around Jakarta. With few exceptions, they were part of an urban elite born under colonial rule and educated at Dutch schools. From the early twentieth century, through the late colonial era, the national revolution, and well into independence after 1945, these intellectuals injected their ideas of modernity, progress, and freedom into local and national discussion. When Mrázek began his interviews, he expected to discuss phenomena such as the transition from colonialism to postcolonialism. His interviewees, however, wanted to share more personal recollections. Mrázek illuminates their stories of the past with evocative depictions of their late-twentieth-century surroundings. He brings to bear insights from thinkers including Walter Benjamin, Bertold Brecht, Le Corbusier, and Marcel Proust, and from his youth in Prague, another metropolis with its own experience of passages and revolution. Architectural and spatial tropes organize the book. Thresholds, windowsills, and sidewalks come to seem more apt as descriptors of historical transitions than colonial and postcolonial, or modern and postmodern. Asphalt roads, homes, classrooms, fences, and windows organize movement, perceptions, and selves in relation to others. A Certain Age is a portal into questions about how the past informs the present and how historical accounts are inevitably partial and incomplete.
