Starting with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) regulatory EDMS/AEDT, it describes how best to use available models, in combination with potential on-site monitoring programs, to conduct air quality assessments. Also, we examined the impact of these pollutants on the morbidity and mortality rate of the COVID-19 virus. Our study shows that: air pollution reduced in communities around the airport during the lockdown and low operations; areas downwind and in the vicinity of the airport recorded high incidence and mortality during the pandemic. These changes in pollution, incidence, and mortality are represented in charts available in the research study. Air pollution is a critical issue in urban cities. While air pollution has been reduced in some cities, its effect on human health is considerable. In this study, data for air pollutants, mainly oxides of Nitrogen and Particulate matter, was observed for variations before and during the pandemic lockdown from three airports in two countries.

We demonstrate that daily airport runway congestion contributes significantly to local pollution levels and contemporaneous health of residents living nearby and downwind from airports. Our research design exploits the fact that network delays originating from large airports on the East Coast increase runway congestion in California, which in turn increases daily pollution levels around California airports. Using the component of California air pollution driven by airport congestion, we find that carbon monoxide (CO) leads to significant increases in hospitalization rates for asthma, respiratory, and heart related emergency room admissions that are an order of magnitude larger than conventional estimates: A one standard deviation increase in daily pollution levels leads to an additional $1 million in hospitalization costs for respiratory and heart related admissions for the 6 million individuals living within 10km (6.2 miles) of the 12 largest airports in California. While infants and the elderly are more sensitive to air pollution, we also find significant relationships for the adult population. The health impacts are driven by CO, not NO2 or O3, and occur at levels far below existing EPA mandates. Our results suggest there may be sizable morbidity benefits from lowering the existing CO standard -- National Bureau of Economic Research web site.

Book excerpt: This report describes in detail the computer code of the Airport Vicinity Air Pollution (AVAP) model and the variables required to exercise the model. The AVAP model is a computerizing comprehensive airport simulation model which can serve as a tool in evaluating the total air quality impact of all airport operations on the airport vicinity. The report focusses on the operational procedures and descriptions of the structure and function of the computer code. The structure, chain of command that links the subroutines, and the more important computational subroutines are illustrated in detailed flow diagrams. The basic formulas used in the calculations are presented. One section provides guidelines for preparation of the input data and can serve as a 'mini' instruction manual by itself. Procedures are described by which the airport and environ data can be collected and cast into the proper forms. The data deck formating, variable limits and omissions permitted, and the computer configuration required to run the code are discussed. Samples of input and output are included.
