With the increase of diversity across colleges, there was a need for campus leaders to implement culturally responsive practices to address minority student retention and persistence. The purpose of my qualitative case study was to examine underrepresented minority students’ perceptions of culturally responsive holistic support systems and its influence on persistence at a predominately White institution in the Southeast United States. For this study, I emailed questionnaires to underrepresented minority students who identified as Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Multi-racial. I conducted two 20-minute observations of the campus environment to gain an understanding of minority student engagement, the cultural context in which study participants lived, and the relationships among and between groups. After reading and synthesizing 21 responses from study participants during the Spring 2023 academic year, eight themes emerged regarding underrepresented minority students’ perceptions of their campus environment and campus support systems. I found for underrepresented minority students to navigate their campus environment, there was a need to create opportunities for meaningful and authentic relationships which influenced their persistence.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the effects of campus culture on minority students' perceptions of their academic success at a predominately White technical college in Pennsylvania. Critical Race Theory (CRT) formed the foundation for the study and defines the researches stances. In addition, retention models as identified by the literature, specifically Kuh and Love's (2000) cultural perspective on student departure, and studies investigating campus culture at PWIs develop the second and third prongs of the conceptual framework. The study sought to answer the central research question: How do minority students perceive the effect of campus culture on their integration to campus? Current students at the site institution participated in focus groups and responded to a qualitative open-ended questionnaire. Existing institutional campus climate quantitative data was analyzed by race to determine if there was significant difference in feeling a sense of belonging between students of different racial backgrounds. Data were analyzed and coded to inform results. The findings revealed four major themes regarding minority student perceptions of the effect of campus climate on academic and social integration: (a) Campus Climate, (b) Campus Involvement, (c) Support of Faculty and Staff, and (d) Positive Academic Experiences. The findings were situated within the literature to present three results of the study, (a) Participants perceive the campus climate to be inhospitable, (b) Participants are very engaged in the academic experiences, and (c) Participants have had positive social engagement experiences through events and organizations that have provided a niche to minority students. The desired outcome of the study was to use the findings to guide future practice in the area of increasing retention and graduation rates of minority students through creating inclusive campus environments.

Book excerpt: The Culturally Responsive Special Education/English as a Second Language (ESL) program was designed to assist students from diverse backgrounds in being academically successful in a large western private university. Utilizing the Cultural Congruity Scale (CCS) and University Environment Scale (UES), this study analyzed the perceptions of 28 students who are ethnically diverse and enrolled in the Culturally Responsive Special Education/ESL Program. The data will be used to evaluate the program's success in addressing the barriers that have historically kept students who are ethnically diverse from succeeding in higher education. Participating students completed CCS and UES surveys questioning their perceptions regarding cultural congruity and how they perceived the university environment. Descriptive data based on responses to survey questions were summarized and examined. Additionally, individual survey items were examined to determine specific areas of student concern. Results from the current sample were compared against the instrument's validating normative sample to find the difference between perceptions of students from a more diverse university setting and this program's ethnically diverse students who are attending a program at a predominately white private institution. Results indicate that the students in the current sample perceive high levels of cultural congruity and positive university environment. Compared with students from a more diverse setting, the current sample perceived similar levels of cultural congruity and significantly greater perceptions of positive university environment.

This study used qualitative methods to explore and better understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ college students of color at predominantly White institutions, in order to determine barriers to persistence and effective strategies for institutional education, advocacy, and support. Findings suggest students whose identities encompass intersectional marginality experience disproportionate discrimination, bigotry, and exclusion-individually and institutionally. Predominant Whiteness is both intrusive and reflective of campus environments designed for and maintained by White supremacy and cisheteropatriarchy. LGBTQ+ college students of color, absent from the majority of strategic enrollment processes in higher education, often regard their campuses as indifferent, apathetic, and wholly unwilling to affect substantive change. The study concludes with several recommendations. Predominantly White institutions of higher education must engage more deeply with culturally responsive educational training and engagement that focuses on power and its inequitable distribution and exercise. Faculty and staff representation across the institution should reflect the identities of the students they serve; PWIs must actively recruit and work to retain faculty and staff who are themselves LGBTQ+ people of color.

Book excerpt: Graduate students from historically underrepresented minority (URM) groups (those who identify as Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino/a/x, Native American, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders and/or Alaska Natives) encounter systemic and institutional hindrances to degree completion when enrolled in STEM doctoral programs at predominantly white institutions (Guiffrida & Douthit, 2010). Support networks have been identified as an important component for retention and success for graduate students from URM groups (Carlone & Johnson, 2007; Clewell, 1987; Johnson-Bailey, Valentine, Cervero, & Bowles, 2008; Joseph, 2012; Sweitzer, 2009). This study investigates the composition and structure of URM graduate students’ support networks, where their support comes from, in what capacity, if URM women graduate students gravitate toward support systems that match their cultural/racial background or gender identity, and if URM students who complete degrees experience feelings of loneliness and isolation, which is a contributing factor to underrepresentation of students from these minority groups (Gloria, Robinson, Hamilton, & Willson, 1999). Data for this study were collected through a longitudinal interview process combined with four social network surveys per individual as students progressed through their programs. Interview data allowed for longitudinal tracking of social support network members, which was triangulated with the data from the social networking surveys and analyzed through the lenses of egocentric network analysis, constructivist grounded theory, and critical race theory. Many participants in this study needed and found a strong support network through student organizations that matched their cultural/ethnic/racial background. Countless students struggled with feelings of isolation and loneliness, yet finding support from campus groups helped fill this void. The final data collected after most of them had left graduate school showed significant discrepancy between their reported robust social network and their open-response data where they indicated a significantly reduced social network and the onset of feelings of loneliness. This dissertation, while focusing on social support networks for these URM graduate students at predominantly white institutions, has the potential to address social justice issues and equal opportunities for those identifying as Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino/a/x, encourage the importance of reaching a critical mass in higher education settings, work toward combating systemic racism, add greater diversity and perspectives to the more elite careers that these degrees will lead to, and show the importance of having a social support network while pursuing a prestigious degree, the PhD.

A basic qualitative study was conducted to describe the experiences of minority students enrolled at a southeastern state flagship university. Data collected consisted of one-on-one individual interviews with 13 minority students enrolled at this predominantly White institution. The findings highlighted each participant’s experiences at this university. The findings suggested that support from campus involvements and relationships and the school’s environment all played a role in the students’ experiences at this university. Further, these factors either contributed or did not contribute to their overall sense of belonging.

With more minorities enrolling into predominantly white institutions (PWIs), one might infer that this signals a major step of progression for the United States. However, it is essential to understand the experiences and challenges that minorities may face when attending these institutions. Understanding these challenges are important because they are often minimized and ignored due to the ambiguity of microaggressions. This can be harmful for Black students psychologically and may impact their self confidence in many ways. In many instances, Black students face many forms of subtle racism, such as, microaggressions. Microaggressions can be defined as the subtle and dismissible insults that whites tend to inflict on people of color unconsciously and sometimes consciously (Pierce, 1974). Through conducting 12 in-depth semi-structured interviews with a sample of Black students attending a southeastern university. I aimed to answer the following questions: 1) What types of microaggressions do Black students face while attending a more racially diverse university? and 2) To what extent, and in what ways do students manage their emotions in response to microaggressions? Ultimately, I have found that students experience many forms of microaggressions. The main types of microaggressions that were experienced included: feelings of exclusion, tokenism, being stereotyped, and institutional neglect. Lastly, I found that students employ a combination of emotion work strategies in order to protect themselves from these insults, and to stay productive and successful. Policy implications to support students of color and future directions for research are discussed.
