Book excerpt: "Each page of this book was created on or around its respective full moon as the earth completed one lap of its perpetual orbit around the sun, with photographs taken of or around the driftless Wisconsin landscape. The typography is News Gothic, a type-face originally credited to Wisconsin native Morris Fuller Benton of the American Type Founders Company. The calendar pages are printed on New Leaf Imagination 100 lb. cover (100% PCW, processed chlorine free, ancient forest friendly, Forest Stewardship Council certified, and manufactured in Wisconsin with electricity offset with Green-e certified renewable energy certificates) by Mark Troy at Dairyland Printing in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Finishing touches on the design and copy, including this colophon, were completed on November 11, 2011 (11-11-11). This is a limited edition of 19 signed and numbered copies." --Cover.

Book excerpt: Kaia has won the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to intern at the Globe Center under the tutelage of John, one of the most brilliant scientists and mathematicians in the world. But the moment she sets foot inside the building, she realizes it won’t be easy. John has his fingers in nearly every project, and plans to drag her along with him. To top off her first day, a group of thieves infiltrates the building, seeking to steal a specific Door—a portal that can travel somewhere else in the universe—and John, Kaia, and Clyde, the newest security officer at the Globe, end up smack dab in the middle of the chaos. Meanwhile, on the other side of the universe, Holland, Admiral of a Zirian colony fleet traveling to a newly discovered planet, has just woken up from stasis to discover that her brother is dead, as are many of the colonists who were traveling with her, and her fleet is infected by a very odd digital virus. Somehow, Holland has to get her fleet back on track, while at the same time, Kaia and John have to manage the chaos back home. And the consequences of failure could mean the end of Holland’s fleet, and possibly the end of their entire civilization. This portal fiction novel is the third book in the Zirian Chronicles series. Book excerpt: Years ago, somewhere on the Internet, I posted a few dumb drawings making fun of my own anxiety and depression. The response to them was warmer than anticipated, and people kept asking for more. Blending humor with pure depression seemed to strike a chord with a decent amount of people. So I kept going, and after about three years of drawing, I had enough dumb drawings for a book. Mental health is a serious thing, and it gets heavier when humans don't talk about it outwardly. I bottled up feelings for many years. Feelings I considered "dark", "weak", "downhearted", "embarrassing", "shameful" or any number of self-deprecating words. But after saying (or drawing) them out loud to people, all that weight went away and I realized it was normal to feel these feelings.Humor has always been a primary mode of therapy for me. I still make fun of my own anxiety and "depresh" as catharsis. I sing about it on tour, talk about it on my podcast, and draw pictures of it here in this book. Putting my formerly-private-feelings out into the world has been tremendous therapy for me, and I wish I would've done it sooner.Over the span of many years, I've been illustrating the "hacks", "strategies", or "exercises" that have worked best for me in combating the struggles in my head. More than anything I want this book to be useful for people. I'm not a doctor, just a person who spends too much time in my head. The objective of It's Hard to Be a Person is not to give unsolicited advice, but to hopefully save you some headaches on the long n' winding road of life in your brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of The End of Vandalism. “Equal parts heist caper, ghost story and romance . . . in prose that is spare and sly.” (The New York Times) Set in the rugged region of the Midwest that gives the novel its title, The Driftless Area is the story of Pierre Hunter, a young bartender with unfailing optimism, a fondness for coin tricks, and an uncanny capacity for finding trouble. When he falls in love, with the mysterious and isolated Stella Rosmarin, Pierre becomes the central player in a revenge drama he must unravel and bring to its shocking conclusion. Along the way he will liberate $77,000 from a murderous thief, summon the resources that have eluded him all his life, and come to question the very meaning of chance and mortality. For nothing is as it seems in The Driftless Area. Identities shift, violent secrets lie in wait, the future can cause the past, and love becomes a mission that can take you beyond this world. In its tender, cool irony, The Driftless Area recalls the best of neonoir, and its cast of bona fide small-town eccentrics adrift in the American Midwest make for a clever and deeply pleasurable read from one of our most beloved authors. “Drury is nothing less than a wizard . . . Not since Twin Peaks has he rural surreal had such an artful airing.” —The Boston Globe “Superb . . . by one of America’s finest, most imaginative authors.” —San Francisco Chronicle “With deceptively simple prose, Drury is able to evoke characters and scenes in just a few brush strokes.” —Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: Author K. S. Lubinski takes a lot of comfort from his relationship with the river. It has helped him find a level of internal peace that was missing in his younger years. In Things that Flow, Lubinski braids strands of life and work on rivers into poems and essays intended to pass his perspectives and values down to his children and future generations. A river ecologist, philosopher, paratrooper, combat veteran, and diver, Lubinski’s experiences span a wide and diverse landscape of nature and its human occupants. His works share word images of silently watching a deer attempting a hazardous swim across the Illinois River, to listening to an ancient hydrologist castigate engineers along the Ganges River, to building sand castles on a Mississippi River beach, and taking a jon boat ride with Miss Sophia, a retired high school history teacher. Intended to help others experience some of what happens on the river, Things that Flow offers insight into one man’s personal relationship with that special body of water.
