Each layer or forma tion is very broad, extending for scores or hundreds of miles, but is of comparatively small thickness. One rests on another like the leaves of a book. Each formation was originally a soft sediment at the bottom ofa sea or ocean. The shale was mud; the sandstone was sand; the limestone was limy ooze. These sediments were brought to the ocean from neighboring lands by rivers, and were spread over the ocean bot tom by ocean currents. The extent of the ocean was changed from time to time, and changes occurred in the character of the rivers; and in consequence of these changes the character of sediment was not always the same. Mud, limy ooze, and sand were deposited in alter nation, building up a varied series of layers. Afterward, by pressure or by chemical changes, the sediments were hardened into rocks such as are now found. The lofty Wasatch Range (pl. I), the western most Oi the Rocky Mountain system, limits the valleys on the east, and relatively low basin ranges - the Oquirrh, Lake, and East Tintic mountains - determine them on the west. The valleys trend north and south, and are almost separated by the low east-west Traverse Range, the Slopes of which constitute a dam for Utah Lake, which drains through Jordan River to Great Salt Lake. The area under consideration is the most populous and ﬂourishing part of the State. Salt Lake City and Provo, the first and third cities in the State, and many other thriving settlements are there located. At' Bingham Junction and Murray a number of smelters treat the ores from near-by mines, but agriculture is the main industry. Water for irriga tion is supplied by mountain streams, and intensive farming is successfully. Pursued. The practice of irrigation was begun by the Mormon pioneers in 1847, and has been dis cussed in several publications; little attention, however, has been given to the under ground water resources, and, so far as the writer is aware, they have not before been described. The present paper outlines conditions Of occurrence of the subterranean waters and describes their development in the valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River. The mean annual rainfall of the region is about 48 inches, ranging from 45 inches in the west to a little more than 50 inches along the Arkansas State line. The mean annual temperature is from 64 to 65 F. The district is traversed from east to west by three lines of railroads, the Texas Pacific (sherman branch), the St. Louis. Southwestern, and the Missouri, Kansas Texas. The Marshall branch of the Texas Pacific crosses the eastern part of the region and the Texas Midland, the Gulf, Colorado Santa Fe, and the St. Louis San Francisco all have their termini at Paris in the north western part of the region. The rich soil of the black prairie lands early attracted settlers. According to the census of 1910 the population of the 10 counties named was or an average of to the square mile. The western part of the region is the most thickly settled, the two black land counties, Lamar and Delta, leading, with an average of and per square mile, respectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Underground Waters of the Arkansas Valley in Eastern Colorado Eastern Colorado lies on the western portion of the Great Plains, which extend from the foot Of the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi Valley. These plains present wide areas of tabular surfaces traversed by the broad, shallow valleys Of large rivers that rise mainly in the Rocky Mountains, and are more or less deeply cut by the narrower valleys of lateral drainage (pl. II). Smooth surfaces and eastward-sloping plains are the characteristic features (pl. III), especially of the Uplands, but in portions Of the region there are buttes, extended escarpments, and canyons of considerable depth. Local areas Of sand hills occur, especially along the rivers and on some of the high plains, where there is much loose material that can be blown by the wind. The altitudes average about feet at the foot of the mountains and about feet along the eastern border of Colorado. Westward the mountains rise steeply to altitudes which reach over feet in Pikes Peak, feet in Spanish Peaks, and feet in Greenhorn Mountain. The principal streams of the region are South Platte and Arkansas rivers. These rise in the mountains, where they ﬂow in deep canyons, but in crossing the plains their valleys are Wide and average about 200 feet below the surrounding higher lands. Near the mountains the Arkansas Valley is bordered in places by cliffs Of moderate height, but to the east the side slopes are very gentle. The altitude in the valley at the mouth of Royal Gorge is feet; at Pueblo it is feet, and at the Kansas line feet. The average grade from Canyon to Pueblo is 15 feet to the mile, from Pueblo to La Junta, 8 feet, and from La Junta to the Kansas line, feet.
