Book excerpt: Since the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis began its study of water quality modeling and management in 1977, it has been interested in the relations between uncertainty and the problems of model calibration and prediction. The work has focused on the theme of modeling poorly defined environmental systems, a principal topic of the effort devoted to environmental quality control and management. Accounting for the effects of uncertainty was also of central concern to our two case studies of lake eutrophication management, one dealing with Lake Balaton in Hungary and the other with several Austrian lake systems. Thus, in November 1979 we held a meeting at Laxenburg to discuss recent method ological developments in addressing problems associated with uncertainty and forecasting of water quality. This book is based on the proceedings of that meeting. The last few years have seen an increase in awareness of the issue of uncertainty in water quality and ecological modeling. This book is relevant not only to contemporary issues but also to those of the future. A lack of field data will not always be the dominant problem for water quality modeling and management; more sophisticated measuring techniques and more comprehensive monitoring networks will come to be more widely applied. Rather, the important problems of the future are much more likely to emerge from the enhanced facility of data processing and to concern the meaningful interpretation, assimilation., and use of the information thus obtained.

Book excerpt: The main objective of the Water Framework Directive in the European countries is to achieve a “good status” of all the water bodies, in the integrated management of river basins. In order to assess the impact of improvement measures, water quality models are necessary. During the previous decades the progress in computer technology and computational methods has supported the development of advanced mathematical models for pollutant transport in rivers and streams. This book is intended to provide the fundamental knowledge needed for a deeper understanding of these models and the development of new ones, which will fulfil future quality requirements in water resources management. This book focuses on the fundamentals of computational techniques required in water quality modelling. Advection, dispersion and concentrated sources or sinks of contaminants lead to the formulation of the fundamental differential equation of pollutant transport. Its integration, according to appropriate initial and boundary conditions and with the knowledge of the velocity field, allows for pollutant behaviour to be assessed in the entire water body. An analytical integration is convenient only in one-dimensional approach with considerable simplification. Integration in the numerical field is useful for taking into account particular aspects of water body and pollutants. To ensure their reliability, the models require accurate calibration and validation, based on proper data, taken from direct measurements. In addition, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis are also of utmost importance. All the above items are discussed in detail in the 21 chapters of the book, which is written in a didactic form for professionals and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National and international interest in finding rational and economical approaches to water-quality management is at an all-time high. Insightful application of mathematical models, attention to their underlying assumptions, and practical sampling and statistical tools are essential to maximize a successful approach to water-quality modeling. Chapra has organized this user-friendly text in a lecture format to engage students who want to assimilate information in manageable units. Comical examples and literary quotes interspersed throughout the text motivate readers to view the material in the proper context. Coverage includes the necessary issues of surface water modeling, such as reaction kinetics, mixed versus nonmixed systems, and a variety of possible contaminants and indicators; environments commonly encountered in water-quality modeling; model calibration, verification, and sensitivity analysis; and major water-quality-modeling problems. Most formulations and techniques are accompanied by an explanation of their origin and/or theoretical basis. Although the book points toward numerical, computer-oriented applications, strong use is made of analytical solutions. In addition, the text includes extensive worked examples that relate theory to applications and illustrate the mechanics and subtleties of the computations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACTWater distribution system modeling can be used as a basis of planning and operation decisions. However, model accuracy and uncertainty will impact the model based decisions. Model prediction uncertainty results from uncertainty in model parameters that are determined through calibration or are based upon modeler judgment. The focus of this dissertation is the effect of uncertainties on water quality model estimates and calibration. The dissertation is centered around three journal articles and a technical note. In the first paper, the effect of parameter uncertainty on water quality in a distribution system under steady and unsteady conditions was analyzed by Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Sources of uncertainties for water quality include decay coefficients, pipe diameter and roughness, and nodal spatial and temporal demands. The effect of individual parameter is discussed, as well as the combined effect of the parameters. It also describes the effect of flow patterns. A general calibration model is developed in the second paper for identifying wall decay coefficients. The problem is solved using the SFLA optimization algorithm that is coupled with hydraulic and water quality simulation models using the EPANET toolkit. The methodology is applied on two application networks. The study presents the effect of different field conditions such as the network with or without tanks, altering disinfectant injection policies, changing measurement locations, and varying the number of global wall decay coefficient on the estimated parameters. The numerical study also discusses whether the complexity of the system can be captured with fewer than the actual number of field parameters and if the number of the measurement locations is sufficient. The third paper conducts a study that considers a full calibration assessment for a water quality model in the distribution systems. The calibration process begins with estimating the the best fit wall decay coefficients. Next, the uncertainties involved with estimated parameters are calculated. Finally, the study assesses the model prediction uncertainties for critical demand conditions due to the parameter uncertainties. Various conditions are evaluated including the effects of different measurement errors and different measurement conditions on the uncertainty levels of estimated parameters as well as on the model predictions. Fourth paper presents study in which a booster disinfectant is introduced within a distribution system to maintain disinfectant residuals and avoid high dosages at water sources. Assuming that first order reaction kinetics apply to chlorine decay, an integer linear programming optimization problem is posed to booster locations and their injection rates. The formulation avoids long water quality simulations by adding constraints requiring the concentrations at the beginning and end of the design period to be the same. The optimization problem is divided into two levels. The upper level selects the booster locations using a genetic algorithm, if more than a few boosters are included, or enumeration, if the number of boosters and/or potential locations is relatively small. Given a set of boosters from the upper level, the lower level minimizes the chlorine mass to be injected to maintain required residuals. The approach is applied to the Brushy Plains system for alternative numbers of allowable boosters.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling presents a complete overview of current methods used to describe or predict transport in aquatic systems, with special emphasis on water quality modeling. The book features detailed descriptions of each method, supported by sample applications and case studies drawn from the authors' years of experience in the field. Each chapter examines a variety of modeling approaches, from simple to complex. This unique text/reference offers a wealth of information previously unavailable from a single source. The book begins with an overview of basic principles, and an introduction to the measurement and analysis of flow. The following section focuses on rivers and streams, including model complexity and data requirements, methods for estimating mixing, hydrologic routing methods, and unsteady flow modeling. The third section considers lakes and reservoirs, and discusses stratification and temperature modeling, mixing methods, reservoir routing and water balances, and dynamic modeling using one-, two-, and three-dimensional models. The book concludes with a section on estuaries, containing topics such as origins and classification, tides, mixing methods, tidally averaged estuary models, and dynamic modeling. Over 250 figures support the text. This is a valuable guide for students and practicing modelers who do not have extensive backgrounds in fluid dynamics.
