Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the 20th century, Colombia suffered extreme levels of political violence. This book explores the involvement of the international community in peacebuilding efforts in Colombia since 2016. In particular, it examines how interventions were framed in order to promote and sustain their involvement and questions whether these frames reflected reality within Colombia. The book focuses on key donors, including the US, the EU, Canada, Sweden and the UK, as well as multinational actors, such as the UN and the World Bank, to demonstrate how their framing of local issues for national and international consumption can have real world implications for peacebuilding efforts on the ground.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Peace and Rural Development in Colombia Andrés García Trujillo investigates whether peace agreements geared toward terminating internal armed conflicts trigger rural distributive changes. Combining academic rigor with an insider’s perspective, García Trujillo shows that the peace agreement in Colombia opened an exceptional window for addressing rural inequality. Yet, despite some progress, he argues that the agreement’s leverage to stir change was severely constrained by opposing actors within and outside the government. García Trujillo later applies the framework developed for the Colombian case to explain key dynamics of other post-conflict societies that have dealt with agrarian issues under a transitional context, like El Salvador or South Africa. The original theoretical framework and empirically rich analysis make Peace and Rural Development in Colombia an indispensable read for scholars and practitioners who wish to gain an understanding on the political economy of peacemaking, policy change, and rural development in Colombia and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signing of the peace agreements between the FARC-EP and the Colombian Government in late November 2016 has generated new prospects for peace in Colombia, opening the possibility of redressing the harm inflicted on Colombians by Colombians. Talking about peace and transitional justice requires us to think about how to operationalize peace agreements to promote justice and coexistence for peace. This volume brings together reflections by Colombian academics and practitioners alongside pieces provided by researchers and practitioners in other countries where transitional justice initiatives have taken place (Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Peru). This volume has been written in the south, by the south, for the south. The book engages with the challenges ahead for the coming generations of Colombians. Rivers of ink have dealt with the end goals of transitional justice, but victims require us to take the quest for human rights beyond the normative realm of theorizing justice and into the practical realm of engaging how to implement justice initiatives. The tension between theory—the legislative frameworks guaranteeing human rights—and practice—the realization of these ideas—will frame Colombia’s success (or failure) in consolidating the implementation of the peace agreements with the FARC-EP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the outcome of interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaborative research carried out by the Alliance of Universities for Regional Urban Development with Equity, constituted by the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, Universidad ICESI, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana-Cali, Universidad de San Buenaventura-Cali, and Universidad del Valle. The Ford Foundation endorsed this alliance between the universities of the region to provide scientific and technical support to social inclusion projects aimed at generating equity. The financial resources provided by the Ford Foundation and the time allocated by the professors and researchers of the Universidad Autónoma, Universidad ICESI, Universidad de San Buenaventura-Cali and Universidad del Valle made this research and its publication in a book possible. This book discusses different theoretical guidelines used in the definition of a region, considered useful as analytical references for the empirical proposal in this book about the 28 municipalities in northern Cauca and southern Valle. Its six chapters describe the patterns of territory occupation, the socio-demographic characterization of the municipalities of the extended city-region, the region's economic structure components, the labor market imbalances, the analysis of the political-electoral heterogeneity of the urban agglomeration of Cali, and some conclusions and policy recommendations. Hence, based on a conceptual and methodological model, the empirical analysis furthered in this book indicates that Cali, as the main urban center, should include in its development plans and territorial planning more effective measures to know, assess, and plan—together with the neighboring municipalities, not only those of the department of Valle itself but those of the urban-rural periphery or hinterland of the southwest, which includes the municipalities of southern Valle and northern Cauca—, albeit through less asymmetrical relations and more shared associations to face a set of common problems that affect the entire region whose epicenter is Cali.
