Book Synopsis Prejudice and Pride by : Damien-Claude Bélanger
Download or read book Prejudice and Pride written by Damien-Claude Bélanger and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a country with enormous economic, military, and cultural power, the United States can seem an overwhelming neighbour - one that demands consideration by politicians, thinkers, and cultural figures. Prejudice and Pride examines and compares how English and French Canadian intellectuals viewed American society from 1891 to 1945. Based on over five hundred texts drawn largely from the era's periodical literature, the study reveals that English and French Canadian intellectuals shared common preoccupations with the United States, though the English tended to emphasize political issues and the French cultural issues. Damien-Claude Belanger's in-depth analysis of anti-American sentiment during this era divides Canadian thinkers less along language lines and more according to their political stance as right-wing, left-wing, or centrist. Significantly, the era's discourse regarding American life and the Canadian-American relationship was less an expression of nationalism or a reaction to US policy than it was about the expression of wider attitudes concerning modernity.

Book Synopsis Modern Societies & the Science of Religions by : Gerard Wiegers
Download or read book Modern Societies & the Science of Religions written by Gerard Wiegers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together studies by seventeen specialists in the science of religions in which they relate the changes in their discipline to the changes which have occurred in a select number of modern(ising) societies worldwide. It attempts to study these developments in their relation to and as conditioned and constrained by cultural change, changes in educational systems, technology, population (for example migration), economic patterns, politics, and, last but not least, religious systems. The essays focus on resp. France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the USA, Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, and China. Written in honour of Dr. Lammert Leertouwer, professor of History of Religions and the Comparative Study of Religions at Leiden University from 1979 until his retirement in 1997, the book is particularly important for all those who are interested in the religious, social and political contexts of the academic Study of Religions in general and in the various countries dealt with in particular.
Book Synopsis From the Napoleonic Empire to the Age of Empire by : Thomas Dodman
Download or read book From the Napoleonic Empire to the Age of Empire written by Thomas Dodman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores imperial entanglements to reassess the Napoleonic Empire as a missing link—or at least an important chain—in the global and longue durée history of Empires. In recent years Napoleonic studies have, belatedly but resolutely, embraced the transnational historiographical turn, vastly expanding the field’s geographical scope. Its canonical chronological boundaries, on the other hand, appear increasingly narrow against this wider backdrop, giving the impression of a parenthetical, almost anachronistic aside from 1799 to 1815. What connects, and what doesn’t connect, the Napoleonic Empire to the Age of Empire, remains by and large an open question. Put another way, this book attempts to locate the Napoleonic empire in World History.

Book Synopsis World Yearbook of Education 2010 by : AndreElias Mazawi
Download or read book World Yearbook of Education 2010 written by AndreElias Mazawi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Yearbook of Education 2010 volume, Education and the Arab 'World': Political Projects, Struggles, and Geometries of Power, strives to do justice to the complex processes and dynamics behind the world of Arab education. Western interest in all things Arab has greatly increased over the course of the decade, but this interest runs the risk of forgetting that the Arab world is positioned within wider contexts of regional, geopolitical, and global processes. This volume examines Arab education in a range of contexts regional, diasporic, and trans-national to better understand how the field of Arab education is formed through local, regional, geopolitical and global engagements and resonances. In doing so, contributors from a range of disciplines open critical conversations about the intersections of history, culture, geopolitics, policy, and education. The World Yearbook of Education 2010 offers new conceptual and empirical approaches that deal with some of the often-neglected aspects of the study of Arab education: contested political projects; struggles towards emancipation, recognition and liberation; and a larger concern for social justice, equity, and political inclusion. Andrlias Mazawi is associate professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. He is also an associate fellow at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research at the University of Malta.Ronald G. Sultana is professor in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Malta, where he also leads the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research.
