Abstraction is hard, and visualizing abstractions is as well, but here she’ll guide you in doing both using Rational Software Architect.” —From the Foreword by Grady Booch, IBM Fellow Master UML 2.0 Visual Modeling with IBM Rational Software Architect Using IBM Rational Software Architect, you can unify all aspects of software design and development. It allows you to exploit new modeling language technology to architect systems more effectively and develop them more productively. Now, two of IBM’s leading experts have written the definitive, start-to-finish guide to UML 2-based visual modeling with Rational Software Architect. You’ll learn hands-on, using a simplified case study that’s already helped thousands of professionals master analysis, design, and implementation with IBM Rational technologies. Renowned UML expert Terry Quatrani and J2EE/SOA evangelist Jim Palistrant walk you through visualizing all facets of system architecture at every stage of the project lifecycle. Whether you’re an architect, developer, or project manager, you’ll discover how to leverage IBM Rational’s latest innovations to optimize any project. Coverage includes Making the most of model-driven development with Rational Software Architect’s integrated design and development tools Understanding visual modeling: goals, techniques, language, and processes Beginning any visual modeling project: sound principles and best practices Capturing and documenting functional requirements with use case models Creating analysis models that begin to reveal your optimal system implementation Building design models that abstract your implementation model and source code Using implementation models to represent your system’s physical composition, from subsystems to executables and data Transforming these models to actual running code The IBM Press developerWorks® Series is a unique undertaking in which print books and the Web are mutually supportive. The publications in this series are complemented by resources on the developerWorks Web site on ibm.com. Icons throughout the book alert the reader to these valuable resources.

Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Design: An Object-Oriented Approach with UML, Sixth Edition helps students develop the core skills required to plan, design, analyze, and implement information systems. Offering a practical hands-on approach to the subject, this textbook is designed to keep students focused on doing SAD, rather than simply reading about it. Each chapter describes a specific part of the SAD process, providing clear instructions, a detailed example, and practice exercises. Students are guided through the topics in the same order as professional analysts working on a typical real-world project. Now in its sixth edition, this edition has been carefully updated to reflect current methods and practices in SAD and prepare students for their future roles as systems analysts. Every essential area of systems analysis and design is clearly and thoroughly covered, from project management, to analysis and design modeling, to construction, installation, and operations. The textbook includes access to a range of teaching and learning resources, and a running case study of a fictitious healthcare company that shows students how SAD concepts are applied in real-life scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of most real-time and embedded systems often exceeds that of other types of systems since, in addition to the usual spectrum of problems inherent in software, they need to deal with the complexities of the physical world. That world—as the proverbial Mr. Murphy tells us—is an unpredictable and often unfriendly place. Consequently, there is a very strong motivation to investigate and apply advanced design methods and technologies that could simplify and improve the reliability of real-time software design and implementation. As a result, from the first versions of UML issued in the mid 1990’s, designers of embedded and real-time systems have taken to UML with vigour and enthusiasm. However, the dream of a complete, model-driven design flow from specification through automated, optimised code generation, has been difficult to realise without some key improvements in UML semantics and syntax, specifically targeted to the real-time systems problem. With the enhancements in UML that have been proposed and are near standardisation with UML 2. 0, many of these improvements have been made. In the Spring of 2003, adoption of a formalised UML 2. 0 specification by the members of the Object Management Group (OMG) seems very close. It is therefore very appropriate to review the status of UML as a set of notations for embedded real-time systems - both the state of the art and best practices achieved up to this time with UML of previous generations - and where the changes embodied in the 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, analysis, development, and database teams work for different business units, and use different design notations. With UML and the Rational Unified Process (RUP), however, they can unify their efforts -- eliminating time-consuming, error-prone translations, and accelerating software to market. In this book, two data modeling specialists from Rational Software Corporation show exactly how to model data with UML and RUP, presenting proven processes and start-to-finish case studies. The book utilizes a running case study to bring together the entire process of data modeling with UML. Each chapter dissects a different stage of the data modeling process, from requirements through implementation. For each stage, the authors cover workflow and participants' roles, key concepts, proven approach, practical design techniques, and more. Along the way, the authors demonstrate how integrating data modeling into a unified software design process not only saves time and money, but gives all team members a far clearer understanding of the impact of potential changes. The book includes a detailed glossary, as well as appendices that present essential Use Case Models and descriptions. For all software team members: managers, team leaders, systems and data analysts, architects, developers, database designers, and others involved in building database applications for the enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate for all introductory level courses on object-oriented system analysis, design, and/or programming. This book systematically introduces the concepts and methods of object-oriented systems analysis and design to students with little or no object experience. Rigorous yet extremely readable, it introduces the entire process of information system design, providing a thorough grounding in object-oriented techniques, UML, and step-by-step system development. Two of the field's most experienced instructors carefully link information systems analysis and design issues to general systems theory, offering a domain-independent view of design that maintains a clear conceptual distinction between requirements and design. After introducing basic systems concepts and the Rational Unified Process, they turn to object-oriented analysis, covering business event analysis, use cases, system sequence diagrams, domain modeling, and more. Part III focuses on system design, including overall system design based on a three-tier architecture, object-oriented program design, communication between the application layer and database, and user interface design. Finally, in Part IV, the authors offer a practical, real-world discussion of both information gathering and software project management. To support effective learning, every chapter begins with clear learning objectives and ends with summaries, lists of key terminology, review materials, exercises, discussion points, and wherever appropriate, case studies for project assignments.
