Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a major challenge to write the history of post-WWII architectural theory without boiling it down to a few defining paradigms. An impressive anthologising effort during the 1990s charted architectural theory mostly via the various theoretical frameworks employed, such as critical theory, critical regionalism, deconstructivism, and pragmatism. Yet the intellectual contours of what constitutes architectural theory have been constantly in flux. It is therefore paramount to ask what kind of knowledge has become important in the recent history of architectural theory and how the resulting figure of knowledge sets the conditions for the actual arguments made. The contributions in this volume focus on institutional, geographical, rhetorical, and other conditioning factors. They thus screen the unspoken rules of engagement that postwar architectural theory ascribed to.

Book excerpt: This volume has been designed, not as a linear narrative, nor as one with a singular voice. Rather it is presented as a mesh of interwoven essays, images, notes, and voices, which aims to reflect the complexity of artist Antoni T pies and his work, which masterfully internalizes and interprets its time and the evolving role of the artist. Together with essays from authors Robert Caillois, Georges Bataille, Anthonin Artaud, and others, particular works of T pies's are discussed in depth. Included as well is a round table discussion (Xavier Antich, Antoni Llena, Antoni Mercader, Pedro G, Romero, and Charles Guerra) that explores T pies's reception in Catalan society, the significance of his work for successive generations of artists, and the influence that this reception might have exerted on the work itself.

Miro encouraged him to use forms and materials of every kind, all the more so in an environment devoid of meaning-Spain in the post-war years-in which official reality bore no relation to the situation as it really was. Imperceptibly, true reality asserted its pre-eminence and the expressiveness of increasingly organic materials, endowing his painting with greater materiality than signification. 130 illustrations

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive, scholarly sourcebook/research guide/bibliography on the major French Symbolists painters, this work includes nearly 3,000 entries covering a variety of materials. Each artist receives a primary and secondary bibliography with many annotated entries. Art works, personal names, and subject indexes facilitate easy access. The volume is designed for art historians, art students, museum and gallery curators, and others interested in this major art style of the last half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. Art museums and art libraries in both the United States and abroad were gleaned for sources. This is a unique and substantial research tool. Symbolism is one of the most difficult art movements to define. Its primary meaning is the representation of things by symbols, by the imaginative suggestion of dreams and the subconscious through symbolic allusion and luxuriant decoration. The writings of Charles Baudelaire on the arts powerfully influenced the aesthetic theories of Symbolist artists and critics from 1860-1900, much as Baudelaire's poetics were the root of Symbolist literature. The Symbolist work, be it painting or poem, is above all personal and revelatory, precious not commonplace, reflecting and evoking a journey of the imagination. French Symbolist artists explored this style, attitude, and atmosphere from the 1880s to the early twentieth century. This sourcebook organizes biographical, historical, and critical information on four major French Symbolist artists: Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-98), Gustave Moreau (1826-98), Odilon Redon (1840-1916), and Maurice Denis (1870-1943). The first three artists are recognized as originators of the movement. Denis is regarded as Symbolist's foremost theorist and profoundly religious practitioner. Although all four artists have been the focus of major retrospective exhibitions since 1990, no comprehensive sourcebook/bibliography exists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 Umbrian artist Alberto Burri scandalized art critics and audiences worldwide with burned wood, flame-red paintings, dramatic combustions of plastic, and a black that was the color of tar. Indifferent to the twin temptations of modishness and the market, Burri made a name for himself first in the United States and then in his native Italy. "Burri: Seen/Unseen" sets out to reveal many of Burri's previously unknown works. As such, it bears wintess to Burr's ability to continually invent new combinations of forms and materials, and documents his love for small-scale formats*which serve as proof that nontraditional materials can be used even in the most minute and precise forms of painting. "Burri: Seen/Unseen" traces the artist's creative activity from his earliest works to his later years and provides an in-depth examination of his excursions into previously unexplored aesthetic territories.
