Book Synopsis Ultrastructure of the Kidney by : Albert J. Dalton
Download or read book Ultrastructure of the Kidney written by Albert J. Dalton and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrastructure in Biological Systems, Volume 2: Ultrastructure of the Kidney provides an overview of the state of knowledge on the ultrastructure of the mammalian kidney. The application of the electron microscope to studies of the kidney resulted in the demonstration of the hitherto undetected early thickening of the basement membrane of glomerular capillaries in glomerulonephritis. Yet many problems remain, particularly in relation to the correlation between function and the ultrastructure of components of the kidney—mesangium, glomerulus, juxtaglomerular apparatus, and the renal tubules. It is only recently that the mesangium has come to be accepted as real, and many questions remain as to the function of its cells. The existence of true membranes between foot processes of the epithelial cells of glomeruli is a newly established fact; but what this has to do with glomerular filtration is not known at present. Granules apparently secretory in nature have been identified in cells of the juxtaglomerular apparatus, but so far their presence has not been correlated with specific functional change. Artifacts introduced at fixation are now known to have considerable relevance in interpreting the ultrastructure of the normal nephron. These are paraphrased views of the contributors to this monograph who, while acquainting the reader with the research being carried on in these areas, have also brought into focus the many problems still awaiting solution.

Download or read book Ultrastructure of the Connective Tissue Matrix written by P. Motta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the techniques of electron microscopy have developed so widely and rapidly that they now cover the fields of research once the unique ll:panage of sister research techniques such as biochemistry, physiology, immunology, X-ray diffraction, etc. It is now possible to reach molecular and submolecular levels, making this technique indispensable in every type of research. Electron microscopy alone often provides enough information to solve given problems. In the field of the connective tissue matrix, knowledge of the molecular structure of collagen, pro teoglycans and elastin and their interaction has been to a large extent elucidated by electron microscopy. The field over which electron microscopy ranges in the investigation of the connective tissue matrix is so wide that the aim of this volume is to collect the main ultrastructural acquisitions disseminated in various journals and monographs in one book. The intent ofthis volume is to: (a) integrate different and new microscopic methods and review the results of such an integrative approach; (b) present a comprehensive ultrastructural account of selected aspects of the field; (c) point out gaps or controversial topics in our knowledge; (d) outline pertinent future research and expansion of the subject.

Book Synopsis Diagnostic Ultrastructural Pathology by : Ann M. Dvorak
Download or read book Diagnostic Ultrastructural Pathology written by Ann M. Dvorak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-06-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostic Ultrastructural Pathology, Volume III, presents individual problem-based cases in a well-illustrated format, using numerous electron micrographs to convey appropriate and necessary visual information for the diagnosis of human disease. The format facilitates the teaching of the case approach for diagnostic ultrastructural pathology using clinical-ultrastructural-pathologic correlation. These guides illustrate key reasoning processes that physicians use to resolve individual clinical problems through the use of electron microscopy. The material is useful to a wide variety of physicians and students of medicine, structure, and disease at various levels of training, as well as in the training of and operational use by technical support staff. The two volumes include a total of 50 cases and a procedural guide for the ultrastructural pathology laboratory. The cases were selected using four principal criteria: (1) classic cases, which are diagnosed readily by light microscopy to facilitate the electron microscopic diagnosis of less classic cases; (2) diagnostic cases, for which ultrastructural analysis is essential for diagnosis; (3) supportive cases, where either the light or the electron microscopic diagnosis is supportive, and thus confirmatory, of the other; and (4) new facts cases, which establish new knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of disease using electron microscopy as the investigative modality. The 50 cases are grouped anatomically in four major categories. Volume III presents the cases dealing with the endocrine and hematopoietic systems. Each section is preceded by introductory remarks. Each case cites relevant, classic, anatomic pathology papers and related research papers. These volumes also include multiple functional indices, providing ready access to the material from several starting points. There are separate indices for presenting symptoms, differential diagnostic groups, ultrastructural pathology criteria, and final diagnostic categories. As a valuable resource and guide, Diagnostic Ultrastructural Pathology Volume III, is an excellent, high-quality addition to the field of diagnostic pathology.

Book Synopsis Functional Ultrastructure by : Margit Pavelka
Download or read book Functional Ultrastructure written by Margit Pavelka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas provides a detailed insight into the complex structure and organization of cells and tissues, and highlights their specific functions as well as the dynamics of diverse intracellular processes. Highly informative electron micrographs are complemented by explanatory texts, selected references and schemes. The concept that subcellular organelles provide the structural foundation for fundamental processes of living organisms is emphasized. The first part covers the cellular organelles and changes caused by experiments or occurring under pathological conditions. The second part employs selected examples to illustrate the principles of functional tissue organization and typical changes resulting from experimental induction or pathological situations. The third edition of the atlas, revised and extended by 23 plates, thus provides an invaluable resource for scientists and students of medicine and biological sciences, particularly of histology, cell and molecular biology. Moreover, it will serve as a handy reference guide for diagnostic and research electron microscopy laboratories in clinical, industrial, and academic settings.
Book Synopsis Ultrastructure of Skeletal Tissues by : E. Bonucci
Download or read book Ultrastructure of Skeletal Tissues written by E. Bonucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calcified tissues have fundamental functions in the biology of organisms, not only because their strength, solidity, and elasticity permit movement and mechanical activities, and protect soft tissues against traumatic forces, but also on account of their role in mineral homeostasis. For this reason, extensive investigation in the last 30 years has provided much to explain the complex chemical and physical processes occurring in cells and matrices composing the skeleton, and their alterations in pathological conditions. The use of ultrastructural methods such as immunocytochemistry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, cytoautoradiography, freeze/fracture etching, high voltage, etc. has proven to be of great value when applied to cells and matrix components of bone and cartilage, in spite of the technical difficulties due to the hardness of these tissues. However, available information on this subject is disseminated in a variety of scientific and medical articles. This volume is an attempt to collect together the most significant data on the ultrastructure of cartilage and bone in normalcy and pathology. Obviously, it cannot be a complete report of all these data, its principal aim being that of: a) giving a comprehensive statement of the results concerning the basic structures common to these tissues, especially collagen fibrils, noncollagenous proteins, and proteoglycans, and their relationships with the mineral substance (for which another volume of this series can also be consulted; see Ruggeri A. , Motta P. M. (eds.
