Book excerpt: Ultrastructure Atlas of Human Tissues presents a variety of scanning and transmission electron microscope images of the major systems of the human body. Photography with the electron microscope records views of the intricate substructures and microdesigns of objects and tissues, and reveals details within them inaccessible to the naked eye or light microscope. Many of these views have significance in understanding normal structure and function, as well as disease processes. This book offers a unique and comprehensive look at the structure and function of tissues at the subcellular and molecular level, an important perspective in understanding and combating diseases. • Presents the major systems of the human body through scanning and transmission electron microscope images • Has images prepared almost exclusively from human tissues • Includes electron micrographs of common pathologies such as fibrotic and emphysemic lung, kidney stones, sickle cell anemia, and skin parasites • Contains sets of 3D images in most chapters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrastructure in Biological Systems, Volume 2: Ultrastructure of the Kidney provides an overview of the state of knowledge on the ultrastructure of the mammalian kidney. The application of the electron microscope to studies of the kidney resulted in the demonstration of the hitherto undetected early thickening of the basement membrane of glomerular capillaries in glomerulonephritis. Yet many problems remain, particularly in relation to the correlation between function and the ultrastructure of components of the kidney—mesangium, glomerulus, juxtaglomerular apparatus, and the renal tubules. It is only recently that the mesangium has come to be accepted as real, and many questions remain as to the function of its cells. The existence of true membranes between foot processes of the epithelial cells of glomeruli is a newly established fact; but what this has to do with glomerular filtration is not known at present. Granules apparently secretory in nature have been identified in cells of the juxtaglomerular apparatus, but so far their presence has not been correlated with specific functional change. Artifacts introduced at fixation are now known to have considerable relevance in interpreting the ultrastructure of the normal nephron. These are paraphrased views of the contributors to this monograph who, while acquainting the reader with the research being carried on in these areas, have also brought into focus the many problems still awaiting solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Function of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum is a compendium of papers from an International Conference on Sarcoplasmic Reticulum held in Japan on November 1-4, 1982. Section I is a review of sarcoplasmic reticulum including the "discovery" of the relaxing factor, the calcium binding of relaxing factor, as well as phosphate transfer and calcium transport coupling. Section II involves the chemistry and structure of the calcium pump protein in sarcoplasmic reticulum. One paper describes the role of protein-lipid interactions in the organization and function of biomembranes. Section III considers the kinetics and thermodynamics of the calcium pumping mechanism, particularly the binding of ligands to calcium ATPase of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, as well as the conformational changes of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase induced by substrate binding and phosphorylation. A paper gives the results of several experimental techniques in substrates binding assays employing millipore filters and a thermostated filtration apparatus. Section IV describes the calcium ions release process such as rapid and reversible actions, while Section V discusses the regulation of calcium ions uptake and release in the ion channel vesicles. This book can be helpful for researchers in biophysical engineering, pharmacologists, and scientists in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics.

Book excerpt: This is the first atlas to depict in high-resolution images the fine structure of the spinal canal, the nervous plexuses, and the peripheral nerves in relation to clinical practice. The Atlas of Functional Anatomy for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine contains more than 1500 images of unsurpassed quality, most of which have never been published, including scanning electron microscopy images of neuronal ultrastructures, macroscopic sectional anatomy, and three-dimensional images reconstructed from patient imaging studies. Each chapter begins with a short introduction on the covered subject but then allows the images to embody the rest of the work; detailed text accompanies figures to guide readers through anatomy, providing evidence-based, clinically relevant information. Beyond clinically relevant anatomy, the book features regional anesthesia equipment (needles, catheters, surgical gloves) and overview of some cutting edge research instruments (e.g. scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy). Of interest to regional anesthesiologists, interventional pain physicians, and surgeons, this compendium is meant to complement texts that do not have this type of graphic material in the subjects of regional anesthesia, interventional pain management, and surgical techniques of the spine or peripheral nerves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eosinophil Ultrastructure: Atlas of Eosinophil Cell Biology and Pathology entirely focuses on eosinophils and their functional roles in inflammation, host defense, and normal homeostatic activities. The book explores the ultrastructure of human eosinophils, highlighting biological processes observed under normal, experimental, and pathological conditions. Created to fill a void in the eosinophil literature, the book includes an extensive array of electron microscopic images that illustrate the diversity of eosinophil morphology. While the atlas is a learning and teaching tool, it is mainly a helpful resource for researchers to identify distinguishing features and structural changes that arise during studies of human eosinophils. The book also covers the ultrastructure of mouse eosinophils under normal and activation conditions and in the context of representative diseases. Gives guidelines to understand the human eosinophils in studies focused on structural biology, cellular immunology, innate and adaptive immunity, immune responses to pathogens, immunopathology, and inflammatory responses Provides a core of essential knowledge to identify both immature and mature eosinophils Comprises a representative compilation of the eosinophil ultrastructure during biological processes, such as activation and degranulation, mostly under experimental conditions Highlights eosinophil biological processes found in vivo during human diseases, thus providing a link between basic science and clinical aspects Helps identify distinguishing features and structural changes that arise during studies of human eosinophils after isolation from body fluids, while in cultures, or biopsies Explains the ultrastructural organization of mature and immature mouse eosinophils, highlighting the similarities/differences between them and human eosinophils

Book excerpt: Innovative microscopic techniques, introduced during the last two decades, have contributed much to creating a new picture of the dynamic architecture of the cell, which can now be more exactly correlated with specific biochemical and physiopathological events. These developments have led to significant advances in our understanding of the physiomorphological and pathological aspects of the secretory mechanism, as well as the pharmacologic methods used to control, experimentally, the function of exocrine and endocrine glands. The integration of new ultrastructural methods such as freeze-fracture/etching, immunocytochemistry, scanning and high-voltage electron microscopy, cytoautoradiography, etc. , has proven to be of great value when applied to the study of endocrine cells and tissues. Because information on this topic has appeared in a variety of scientific and medical journals, this book: (1) reviews the results of an integrative approach presenting a comprehensive ultrastructural account of the main aspects of the field; (2) points out gaps or controversial topics in our knowledge; and (3) outlines pertinent directions for future research. The chapters, prepared by recognized authorities in the field, present traditional information on the topic in a concise manner and, with a valuable selection of original illustrations, show what the integration of new microscopic methods can contribute to the subject in terms of new concepts. This volume will be useful to cell biologists, anatomists, embryologists, histologists, pharmacologists, pathologists, and, of course, endocrinologists. It will also be of interest to students, practitioners of medicine, and to all others dealing with clinical research and diagnosis.

Book excerpt: The Ultrastructure of the Animal Cell examines the ultrastructure of the animal cell, with emphasis on the chemical, biochemical, and physiological aspects of the cell. Discussions are organized around the interphase cell and cell division and cover topics ranging from the general structure and molecular models of cell membranes to the ultrastructure of the nucleus and the cytosome. Changes in cell ultrastructure during embryogenesis, differentiation, and secretion are also considered. This monograph is divided into nine chapters and opens with an introduction to the principles and techniques of electron microscopy. The next section is about the interphase cell and first presents an overview of the animal cell before proceeding with an analysis of the ultrastructure of the nucleus and the cytosome, paying particular attention to the plasma membrane and associated structures; the hyaloplasm; endoplasmic reticulum; the Golgi complex; and mitochondria. The changes that occur in the ultrastructure of the cell during embryogenesis, differentiation, and secretion are also described. The last section focuses on cell division and the ultrastructure of the dividing cell. This text will be a useful resource for cell biologists, biochemists, and physiologists, as well as students and teachers of biology, biochemistry, and physiology.
